  • What GR said about the amount of risk assessment paperwork rings a bell. And, to tell the truth, I`m at my whits end with it. I spend twice as much time doing paperwork - to cover the home - as I do caring for people. More to this, I`m expected to write a daily report about some of the folks I may hardly have even seen that day - because of the damn paperwork.

Just telling how it is !

  • @ jemima666 the reason why there is such bitching between staff in nursing homes is because care work is low-status employment for low-status people and there is stangation, resentment and frustration at the lack of status and prospects. The care staff look to find something in their relative situation to 'redeem' themselves and get above each other by bitching and undermining and fault-finding and reporting each other.

And these are supposed to be 'caring' people?

  • I have worked in so many homes in the past five years and being a nurse i do feel that the are complex needs for the patients. I see rsidents losing weight because they are just giving the patient food and theydont have choice. It makes me so angry that carers can not get a payrise so no wonder thins are the way they are. Too much time is waste bitchin between staff. It makes me weep when things get better like this. its digusting and makes us nurses and carers look bad. so understand

  • Now and again I get pissed off by people walking into homes I work in, and telling me how to do my job. I do it the best I can. This year I`m working xmas day, boxing day, new years eve, and for it, I might earn almost as much as the Mon - Fri 9-5 worker earns on any regular day of the week. I`ve yet to see anyone from Social Services visit on xmas day. And, to boot, some people in the `normal world` are asking us to get some training ! Training in what ? Common sense ?

  • Its true, they have to pay the staff more money.

The problem is that the care industry is a BUSINESS. Business is there to make money not to help people. The way they make money is by cutting costs and taking advantage of the staff. It has to become a public not private industry.

  • Common sense seems to be lacking mate? How would you like your loved ones treated like SHIT??????

  • Hello MrGodhelpus. I wouldn`t like it, and I wouldn`t have it. What I meant when I said it pisses me off, is that pen pushers come into homes and tell us how to talk with residents. I have an HND in care, and am not a fool.

Actually I work in a very good home, where the residents are treated very well. But I can well understand the lack of morale that prevails in some homes. Notwithstanding, I do not condone in any way people being ill treated. On that we have a consensus ad idem.
