This film is moving, and so emotional - especially as it focuses on a samurai 's daily life and not just flashy sword fighting - though the fight at the end is amazing , its so poignant and sad but at the same time its uplifting and even inspiring.
One of the most amazing movies I have ever seen. I wanted to catch Hiroyuki Sanada in more movies, was a huge fan of his in Last Samurai and then Sunshine, but my curiousity in the actor lead to this excellent film, good story and even better execution, it ended up surpassing the previous two in spades, it rocks!
Following the split from the sumo star Takanohana, Rie Miyazawa seemed to be on a downward spiral to self-destruction. In September 1994 she cut her wrists with a broken glass in what she described as an "accident".The tabloids focused on Miyazawa's drinking session, fights with her mother, and her escape to a nearby hotel as signs of a failed suicide attempt. I am so glad to see her back in this film acting again. Welcome back, Rie-san.
I'm getting this film very soon. I've been getting many Samurai films as well like the Lone Wolf and Cub 1970's TV series, Goyokin, Samurai Banners, The Sword of Doom, some of the Zatoichi films, Zatoichi (2003), and Tomu Uchidas 1 to 6 Miyamoto Musashi series.
i have most of Kozure okami, miyamoto musashi, when the last sword was drawn, Zatoichi the last one, this one twilight samurai, 7 samurai & some more from the old collection of toshiro mifune & there r many more that i'm still looking for..
THE LEGEND OF MUSASHI (1955) probably hard to find but its good. Dont forget about The Last Samurai, ok sure the west has molded the image of the samurai to fit their society but its still undoubtably good.
Tnkx all really for helping me in finding Samurai movies, The last Samurai i have althaugh i didn't mention it but sure i'm gonna try all i can to find The LEGEND OF MUSASHI, I really admire musashi, he was a great Samurai & if i'm not mistaken he invented the Wakizashi. Japanese culture is the BEST in the world & evryone should respect it.
It is the essence of a samurai's way to respect others' pride, to pay respect and to avoid a fight.
However, when it surely could not but fight, they hung and fought the life.
The world will become peaceful if samurais increase in this world.

If this movie was half the movie it was, it would still be much better than The Last Samurai.

Does anyone think that Hiroyuki Sanada would make a perfect actor for Yojimbo or Sanjuro.

I think Mifune Toshiro would made the perfect actor for Yojimbo and Sanjuro.

You might wanna look for "Harakiri", it's quite old but still is one of my favorite samurai films of all time.

In my opinion, Yoji Yamamoto must have been inspired by "Joi-uchi" a.k.a. "Samurai Rebellion" directed by Masaki Kobayashi.
Kobayashi's Samurai films are not focused on sword fight itself, but on psychological insight through Samurai of those days.
So they are portrayed more logically and deeply with excellent lines of each character. I can highly recommend them.
Incidentally, "Harakiri(Seppuku)" that Alphatuning remarked above is one of Kobayashi's pieces as well.
