  • Coltrane is obviously the best saxophone player

  • @marcmedeenuh i would not say he is the best...but he is in the top 5...I would say that, even though Eric Dolphy was not well known...He is on another level...and of course you have the king of Bebop, Charlie Parker

  • 5 stars......I don't know where the argument started about the timbre and tones of Dolphy's solo(s), but I'd imagine most of you opinionated assholes couldn't even handle playing the melody, much less construct a lyrical improv on the fly, so please, shut up and just enjoy the masters at work.

  • Love this. One of John Coltrane's best...

  • xxx great!

  • I'm sorry but Coltrane is HOT.

  • c'mon guys, Dolphy isn't noodling. you gotta be more generous. he was trying something out. IMO it sounds cool, cause it's all major and happy...shows a different aspect to the song.

  • @Rugt980 hey fuck you jack. i love dolphy, i just dont like this solo. who crawled up your ass and died and made you jazz boss?

  • @hiramwilliams1 I find it adds an interesting texture to the piece, and jazz in general. It may sound a bit weird, but for the most part, he resolves the harsher sounding chords well. The solo has a nice flow to it, especially in the end when he starts to tone it down and lead back into the main melody. He doesn't ruin it, he builds on it.

  • flute playing in anything but classical ruins things god bless dolphy but he otherwise ruins this incredible live piece...lp version live version My Fave things incrediblde Dolphy just noodles

  • @hiramwilliams1 I understand what you're saying about Eric Dolphy's solo here, but I have to disagree what you say about the flute. I took classical flute lessons for several years, but never really fell in love with the instrument until I heard it played in the context of jazz and contemporary music, where It's capable of so much expression & many sounds. Have you ever listened to Magic Malik?

  • De lo mejor del jazz, pero aclaramos que no es saxo soprano como se dice, sino es clarinete el instrumento q interpreta Coltrane en este tema, lo digo para q no haya confusion. Saludos...

  • now this is true jazz, have aways loved it and aways will, just wish i could have met the man himself Mr.John Coltrane.

  • @MrHellboys3 me too

  • This for me is Jazz . .

  • Sitting in London at 5:30am Listening to this WOW

  • dimonds and bitches, suits with gold stiches

fast cars and great dank, a few more shall i drank

  • This the best ever... pure bliss! What a musical legacy John Coltrane has left for us all to enjoy! And what can I say about McCoy and Elvin... its all on display in the music. Thanks.

  • Oh wow!

  • is it my ignorance for not playing this instrument, or is the flute out of key?

    love this song anyways....

  • @bluesjoe147 It's dolphy man

  • @bluesjoe147 Dolphy"s intonation is certainly questionable at times, I guess it's an acquired taste, he certainly was a great musician and player,, some people complain Coltrain plays slightly under pitch on tenor,, none of it bothers me as I enter their magical world.

  • @bluesjoe147 Flute here brings a feeling not unlike that of of Ornette Coleman music in those years.

  • who in their life stumbles across this tune and doesn' feel that their existence hasn't been exponentially enhanced?

  • lOvely

  • excellent

  • one of my top 5 ALL TIME greatest songs!

  • @051163able others four?

  • clarinet not sax.. sorry

  • @MojoMixer3676 soprano sax

  • WTF?!!!! Somebody "disliked" this? What sort of soulless, impotent, tone-deaf, cretin could "dislike" this?

  • @qamqo Cretin he/she is

  • For a long time Jazz was always painted for me as a boring musical style and didn't evoke emotion or spirit (and I like classical stuff) but in more recent times people played me proper jazz like this - its absolutely amazing and has so much energy in it - it's fantastic. For me this sums up what life in the city is like.

  • crap dolphy solo

  • @silversupremacist post urself playing the flute on this tune. If it does not have a creativity, beauty, intellect combined with the awesome vituosity that flows out of eric dolphy's flute like silk, then you can shove this comment from where it came from.

  • @Rugt980 *the creativity

  • Man, listening and studying the drumming of Elvin Jones in this recording has helped me so much with my playing.

  • @gamnub405 listen to jimi hendrix also his drummer mitch mitchell was elvin jones roommate and he developed some of elvins style.

  • still to this day,the greatest piece of recorded music ever!

  • all thanks to the sound of music.

  • all thanks to the sound of music.

  • getting high to this is bliss

  • @Angloth :)

  • Thanks for the low brow captions, always some prick who ruins the videos on youtube.

  • i have been listening to this man for over 30 years. he has influenced many sax players but no one comes close to his genius. when he played, his soul, creativity and brilliance poured from the horn. he is and always will be the master

  • This is WAY better than free jazz.

  • A master ! We miss him …

  • truly amazing

  • Thanks for sharing this classic with the world...

  • Jazz was PWNED by Trane!

  • @rationalmind21

How much did he get for it? I might go and buy it.

  • @jamboliboli

  • ha i notice my last comment was 6 days ago.... ive been back every day since! i cant stop. feel like i owe u money for this post!

  • took me 5 mins to realise the pics were on loop.... in my defense i was busy listening! amazing stuff!

  • ITS THE COAL TRAIN BAAAAABY!

  • Coltrane owns this song!!!

  • This is one of my favorite things

  • YO YO SUP ?

  • Oops, meant to say "...the original is almost always better than the remake."

  • In art, esp. music, the original is almost always better than the original. Here, a light, fluffy tune from the Sound of Music has been transformed into a deep, textured meditation. Has there ever been another instance where the original has been so thoroughly surpassed? Just amazing.

  • Thanks for the post. I have been enjoying this music for 45 years. I have four versions of Coltrane's My Favorite things. I don't know if there are more?

  • This is awesome

  • One of the best jazz pieces of all time!

  • @lunox2

that means it's one of the best pieces at all:D

  • One of my favorite jazz tracks all time!

  • I love this ... :3
