great video :) we have a huge clay deposit close by it's on Vandenberg Air Force Base property but open to public for hiking it's the grey kind though came across it when we were kids so clean you could of almost worked it right out of the ground :)
i have just dug my own Coventry (U.K) clay this morning and have just googled and found your film. Yay! One question, whow do i test for toxins/heavy metals etc? clay was dug from back garden. Cant wait to slake!
we live in the country, and i was wondering....... How do you locate clay? How deep do you dig? If you can help please respond. If not i understand. Country: USA State: Illinois
Your garden and the countryside there look just lovely. I don't blame you for wanting to spend time outside. Just love watching your videos and have learned so much from you. Thanks Simon!
I tried processing my own clay right before Easter it was really enjoyable but I only had a very small amount due to only being able to find clumps of clay in my garden that are from the foundations of the house. There is more in the garden it is just under a couple inches of rubble. The clay itself when dry was grey with red flecks but wet was a very disgusting green, it mellowed out a bit when it dried enough to throw, I do have pictures comparing it to stoneware from a sack if you like
I really agree with you that it feels good to have the connection with the earth. I collected some clay in Crete, Greece. My husband carried 18 kilos of it in his suitcase. The clay was bright red in its dry stage, and even redder when wet. We don´t have that kind of clay in Sweden. I fired it to 1050 C. Tried it in 1250, it didn´t melt but warped. It feels good to some one else have the same thoughts. I wish you were my brother Simon!
I have collected some clay about a hundred meters from our house. I have also containers standing in the yard, much smaller though. I skip the sieving, I just stir the slurry, let the biggest stones and sand sink, then pour it into another container. Before that I skim off the roots and things that are floating on the surface. I´m going to use the clay to make step stones to our future green house, so I don´t mind if there is a little find sand in it.
