  • Solid review! Makes me needing a SSD HD that more important.

  • That was AWESOME!

  • very good

  • Spend a lot less and wait for a few more seconds= WIN!

  • thank you man! buying one now

  • I want this video on my T20e phone.

  • Please tell me if gameplay will be better if i use an ssd? Like faster game loading or more fps?

  • @GuyGoxx loads up maps faster for sure but as for fps, you might get at most in best possible situation is an extra 1-2 frames per second which is hardly noticeable considering average playability is 30 fps

  • @GuyGoxx Faster game loading but, that is it. If you are a heavy gamer you are better off putting that money towards a better gpu or cpu.

  • Ive increased my Ram to 2 x 2GB from to 2 x 1GB and still have the problem.

The apple store local to me seem to think its my hard drive not being able to cope with the demand logic puts on it. too slow with 5400rpm?

  • How about reading/writing music tracks with logic?

I mean for example the demo disc thats given with the software "logic express 9" is 3 songs by known recording artists.

Ive tried to play one of them with my current hdd but there too many tracks to play at one time so i get a error code come up with system overload.

A comparison of sdd vs hdd of this situation would be a good way to show the performance speed.

Especially since so many people have laptops for mobile recording studios.

  • @WillClarkMusic Are you sure that you are not running short on RAM?

  • it's funny i heard someone else describe the SSD as "snappier"

  • What's the battery time with ssd?

  • all that money to get things 11 seconds faster... wow.

  • @psycosquirrel789 Right. The story might change in a year or two, when the price of the SSD drives come down to a more affordable rate. For now the price difference is just too great.

  • Your video is a favorite on Nouakchott

  • Unbelievable!

Time is money - i need it!!!

  • isn't it beautiful seeing all those app icons dancing on the dock from the hhd drive macbook? lol

  • for ssds these are pretty inexpensive

  • will start up in 11 seconds....

  • how bout history building within ssd?

  • (i think) i got a question...let me understand...someone buys an SSD and replaces it with the regular HDD ?or you just put the SSD in ? i am a little bit confused.

  • @tolisBFMV yeah I think you buy the ssd, then take out the hdd an replace it

  • @Dexduzdiz oh...thanks

  • damn...it's so expenssive

  • maaaan do you have a cold?

  • question... would SSD dramatically speed up a system where I have 40+ chrome tabs open, and about 30 iterm windows... and another dozen of support apps which are not as intensive

  • @vboulytchev Yes, your better off upgrading to a minimum of 8gb of RAM, even that I feel will struggle with that many tabs and windows.

  • Comment removed

  • want one :s

  • bill gates has 7 accounts

  • @theloopmasta now 8 :D

  • is ssd can install easily like ordinary 2.5 hhd?

  • @jhaypaulino22 Same exact thing. Just make sure you buy a 2.5 inch ssd. 95 percent of ssds are 2.5.

  • just got one, I hope this responsiveness is real. I don't care much about processing time, I just want something to happen as soon as I click my mouse.

  • The SSD is so much more snappier. Looks like it's worth the money.

  • @rocaho001 believe me, it does. I bought one m4 64gb yesterday.... im amazed

  • Thanks for the video. Very informative.

  • Solidworks and Metro 2033 load and render like a muhfucka.

  • thank you, good video

  • itunes takes FOREVER to load, Autodesk programs, browser take so long to load, Sometimes my computer freezes and my HDD activity LED is constant.

Im getting an SSD next week, Cant wait =)

    Specs:

    Quad core 2.66Ghz

    3Gb DDR2 Ram

    160Gb 7200 RPM HDD

    ATI 5770

    650 Watt PSU

(Runs crysis on max setting at about 22-30 Fps)

  • 6 guys have the macbook pro HDD version ;)

  • AWSOME vid XD

  • my mozilla took 15 seconds to load with my orig 5400rpm HDD. with this new baby it loads in 1sec or less - can't even time it anymore! :D

  • I am very worried about the fact that TRIM is not enabled on OSX what are the long term problems I may encounter if I switch?

  • @nicholasfrank1234 You'll have some issues with drive degradation, the SSD won't perform to its optimal specifications once you start using up most of the space.. But OS X Lion will have support for TRIM.. so if your looking to make that upgrade shouldn't be an issue.. Also would work fine on Windows 7 since they do have TRIM support..

  • @appleloveTK is it only certain models of macpro that support TRIM though? also even when the space is used up, is it going to slow to mech drive speed?

  • @cruiser277777 As long as you have a SATA2 ports on your Mac pro then your good to go, also there is now something called trim enabler that you can download to enable trim support for non-intel drives, I've tried it out myself with my Crucial M4 64GB SSD and it works..

  • Given the fact that the hard drive on the left is a 7200 rpm (which I believe is 5400 rpm instead):

-who is interested in spending more money for an SSD ?

Somebody who knows about computer, prosumers, professional.

-since speed mostly regards people with intensive use of computers, on which files SSD will be mostly showing its advantages?

On Pro Apps and Large files.

-so how can a SSD can ever work on large files since it cannot host any if compared to 750gb HDD due to price/ratio of the 2?

  • HOw about with TRIM in MAC oS X

I would like to see how SSD works with ECLIPSE but with Subversion plugin and Adnroid SDK plus android emulator.

  • HOw about with TRIM in MAC oS X

  • The problem with having computers with SSDs in them is when having to use a computer with an HDD...they've gotten slower since my switch to SSD.

  • So, stop me if I am wrong. Having Macbook air with ssd would be just as fast (or possibly faster) as Macbook Pro with hard drive? without gaming of course.

  • @S0RREN yes

  • @PatrickHandojo awesome

  • @S0RREN it depends on what you do

loading an app, yes (hard drive intensive)

encoding video (cpu intensive) definitely not

just consider that the hdd hasn't developed much since the 90's, finally ssd's are coming in but I think they're still too overpriced, and the performance difference isn't large enough, I think they have the potential to make them much faster

  • @123pawlu Well, I dont encode videos that often :-P Hard drive never really been improoved in speed, becose overall space was essencial. Take me for instance, I know about SSD's for few years now. I was always interested in them, even saw couple comparisons, but only recently, I realized that apple creates load of devices with these storage systems on them.

  • @S0RREN works way better on macbook pro because de memory is 4 gb ddr3, core i5 (sandy bridge) compare with 2 gb ddr3, core 2 duo and the preloaded ssd in the mac air is sata 2 in the mac pro you can put sata 3 ssd wich is faster =)

    PD: sorry for my english

  • @kikeronaldo I guess that main reson for putting SSD into small notebook like air is far beyond power. My belive is that SSD generates far less heat, and ocupies smaller space. previous comment to establish a point.

  • @S0RREN less heat, less power consumption and is faster

  • @kikeronaldo Yeah, I assumed speed, and power consumption as too obvious to write down.

  • Congratulations for the video! realy...

I'd like to know how many hours do you have with the HDD and with the SSD?

    Thanks.

  • Tremendous videoz MicronTechnology!! Upload a few more. . . Just because the vidz was very good I am willing to give you my unknown secret on how to earn a completely new apple ipod!! Goto my channel to find out

  • Will this improve youtube viewing on my black Macbook?

  • Don't you know if this disk will work via sata 3 on macbook pro early 2011 ?

  • one question what type of ram is each computer and then if i had 8gb of ram in my macbook pro would ssd improve performance alot

  • Can you do a speed test with those computers in rendering a video in imovie?

  • I guess something I totally forgot about was the fact that, since I edit in HD, a lot of my video is on external hard drives connected with Firewire 800. I don't know how much of a speed difference I'd see in Final Cut if I'm writing the data to the non-SSD external HDD.

  • Great video. I favorited. I have a MacBook Pro 5,1, about to upgrade to 8GB of ram and then maybe an SSD. I am a video editor/web designer. I use the entire Final Cut Studio suite including some very detailed, demanding work in Motion. I edit almost exclusively in HD so that's another speed pull as well. Thanks for the vid!

  • Great demonstration.

  • what is the downfall to SSD over HDD?

  • SSD = Faster loading porn, I'm sold ; )

  • @3KS26 you idiot. porn will base on the internet browser & internet speed you got. don't just sprout your idiocy everywhere.

  • @3KS26 glad you understand. i apologize for starting flame.

  • Comment about using less power is FALSE. Google it they actually use more power than normal hard drives.

  • Fantastic video! Thanks so much for posting. Really appreciate it.

  • Are these MacBooks Pros even sata 3? If not, the new MacBook Pros will be slightly faster, right? Please let me know! Thnx

  • how does the faster speed of the ssd correlate with faster a faster processor? obviously they perform separate functions, but as far as workflow is concerned, the time saving aspects have some overlap. I'm thinking of getting a mbp 15, but am not sure whether i want to spend the extra cash on the 2.2 or 2.3 processor, or go for 2.0 and then get an ssd. any suggestions?

  • I just bought a C300 128gb for my MBP. How can I align and format my ssd during installation? (via terminal, etc)

  • Great video! (although you might want to consider investing in a tripod)

  • i hope ssd comes standard for the new macbook pros in a few days!!!

  • Great video dude. It's crazy how fast they are.

  • Damn, I didn't know that the difference was that HUGE!

  • The C300 seems extremely popular among Mac users, how does it compare with SSD's from other companies, like Intel et al? Especially since the C300 sits on the higher side of the price range? I would love to see a head to head of say a Corsair Nova and a Crucial C300, $100 price difference for the same 128GB size!

  • lol. i love how this made the original macbook look super slow. definitely hope apple will keep incorporating this more into their mobile stuff...also really hope the price starts going down soon.

  • The one dislike was the guy that invented HDDs :P

  • @panzerkiller13 Yeah, how the H*LL can someone NOT like this?! XD

  • @mackieattack

Ppl DO like this...the only thing they don't like, including myself, is the ridiculous cost that comes with SSD's..I personally have a 2010 Macbook pro 13" and would love to have these speed. But it just cost way to much!

  • Thanks, never knew there was such a huge difference between traditional and SSD hard drives.

  • A fair test showcasing the various aspects of improvements an SSD offers, many a time I've been tempted to switch over to a 64GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 13'3. The only thing stopping me is the absence of TRIM support in OS X and the prospective performance decrease over time due to this. If TRIM or some other performance maintaining technology was present for Macintoshes then I would switch over in a second.

  • Thx, now I'm sure to change my hdd on my mac!

    Thx a lot!

  • Hi Steve,

I am planning to buy SSD but i would like to see a test how would it handle multiple VMware running side by side. Can you do a test on running multiple VMware machines?(at least 3 VMware side by side(windows 7, xp and ubuntu)

    Thanks

  • One coming from Ebay!! in few days, cant wait!

  • great video, thanks for posting this. I'm sold.

  • Very good demo. You know your stuff. Will definitely get an SSD for my next PC.

  • @helmikingking Obviously this depends on the type of SSD your planning to buy and your budget

  • Hello Steve, I've got a Macbook Pro 13'' Unibody with 2.26 gigs processor and I want to upgrade it with a SSD. I'm not very sure witch one to buy, i think i would like to get the Intel with 80 Gigabytes

For school and in my free time i'm using Iwork 09 (pages mostly) as well as iphoto, imovie and the microsoft messenger.

Also i would like my laptop to be more silent and especially fast. It heatens up very fast. I would love to hear your opinion. Would it be a good infestation?

    Tank you, Tim

  • im getting one for my MBP tomorrow

  • I do music recording with Logic Studio 9 on a 2.8GHz MacBook Pro (Late 2008, 4GB, 320GB 7200rpm HD). I usually record to external FW drive. Have you tested Logic or Pro Tools performance with internal or external SSD drives vs HDD counterparts? Thanks for the video, very informative!

  • @bliss22 it will be bottle necked by the firewire speed

  • @SwishaHouse7777 Hm true, but I'm wondering if the application's performance will benefit besides a faster startup time.

  • Thanks for this video! Do you think c300's are good for raid0?

  • I am not a very intensive computer user, but I use my mbp 13" everyday for school. However, one area that I notice some lag is when I have my iPhoto open it never can scroll very smoothly. I know I can have more than one library, but I happen to prefer to have all my events in one place (about 150 events/approx 27 GB). I have to assume that this is due to the fact that even for just thumbnails, I am well beyond my RAM capabilities. Would this be one area that I should see improvements?

  • Does the SSD have auto Trim feature since OSX itself doesn't support it?

  • ...look amazing... but next time, is better if you show the "about this mac" window on both of them...

  • Having such a high price I think I'd rather have an HDD with much much higher memory. I'd buy an SSD and have all the Applications and OS on that, but the smallest size possible, and just have anything else on the HDD, the new iMac can have both.

The thing is the desktop background will change the performance very slightly, so this test isn't as fair as it could be, but it doesn't make much of a difference to worry about it.

What are the full specs on both MacBook's here?

  • nice comparison!

but I have a question. The C300 is a SATA 3 SSD, right? But a Macbook has SATA 2, so, obviously, we won't have the 350Mb/s? It it still worth taking the C300, although we don't benefit of the 350Mb/s?

    thanks!

  • whats the difference between the 400$ m225 256gb and the 600$ c300 256gb?

  • The big reason I don't buy an SSD for my macbookpro now is that as far as I know Mac(Snow Leopard) does not have TRIM support yet. Any solution??

  • What email should I send to. I am a photographer and I am curious how this RealSSD will improve my performance in Lightroom 3 with RAW photos. I work with roughly 200 -1200 images for portrait and wedding photos respectively. I am curious if this will speed up previews showing up, things like zooming to 100% on 10-20MB RAW files

  • @dmphoto Let me just point out that there are other SSD's on the market for considerably less....sorry if it seems I'm ruining anyone's business here.

  • @moviesunrated not as fast though

  • Why the hell can't no one boot his machine in verbose mode !?

  • I wonder what I should get... this, or the OCZ RevoDrive.

  • I have a MacBook pro 13" 2.26ghz SATA 1 , am I ok use that SSD SATA 11 you have there?

  • You are unable to afford Macbook Air? Check out offer at macbook7, com Take your chance NOW

    Liked it

  • Very informative. Definitely considering this upgrade for my late model 2008 MacBook Pro.

  • nice video

  • Hey Steve, Please can you clarify something for me, I was told by our local Apple distributer in South africa that installing a SDD into a MacbookPro 13" is not a good idea as it can damage the mac.. Now I find that hard to believe. What has been your and other's experience on this regard?

    Arthur

  • I use excel to process very large sets of data and use lots of formulas. 100,000's of rows of data using Vlookups would be an example. Would an SSD help speed this process up?

  • @faucetguru No. If you don't have enough free memory, more memory would help. Otherwise, performance is limited by your CPU.

  • Super demonstraton

  • that's cool, but not even current gen mbp (mid2010) can properly utilize the c300's amazingness. first, osx doesn't support TRIM yet(thats across the board when it comes to ssd's), second, right now the sata controller on any mbp is only sata3.0 compatible. the c300 is sata6.0 capable so, until the mbp's support sata6.0, it would be wise of one to just purchase another competitors version cause its not gonna be that much faster. watch watch?v=p_xfoVdM9ic to understand

  • good video thanks....

  • has micron done anything to reduce the performance degradation over time? if the units are tested, what is the threshold speed of this ssd after been used for many cycles??

  • does 128 gb SSD is enough? space

  • Sold! Props for getting a SATAIII SSD to market.

  • I would like to buy an SSD, not necessarily the top of the line as those are expensive and can't afford them, but whats the best price you have for a 80/128GB SSD??

  • compare that to OWC SSDs hehehe.. the best on the market

  • impressive comparison. it's exactly what I need. THanks

  • If I ordered a SSd on my new MacBook pro, will it still also have the original hard drive also? Meaning it will have both a hard drive and a SSd? Or would just have a ssd? Please respond. I really enjoyed your informative video

  • @XXBigJunetownXX I don't think that Apple will ship both the SSD and the HDD to you, if you chose the option to upgrade to an SSD on Apple's online store, they will install the SSD in the MacBook Pro and send it to you.; I'm pretty sure they won't send 2 hard drives to you.

    I hope this helps!! >.<"

I really want to get a MacBook Pro with an SSD! If you chose to upgrade, I'm sure you'll have a great experience with your new laptop!

  • will you get the full potential of it with a new MacBook pro(2010 edition)?

  • will you get the full potential of it with a new MacBook pro(2010 edition)?

  • Does anyone know witch is the original 256GB ssd in the MacBook pro?

  • Autodesk Maya

  • Hello Stevem

my C300 256GB arrived today and I've built it in my macbook pro i5. And it's very fast! Although I have an very important question: My boot time doesn't improve to much. Actually mac os loads slower. When I push the power button my mac turns on and I get a blank white screen for over 20 seconds and then the apple logo shows up. What can I improve to avoid this? Your mac almost boots up instantly!

  • sry for the typo

The Solution: I had to set my startup volume and now it boot awsomely fast!

  • these hard drives are still too expensive for me :(

  • How does the C300 256GB compare to the 256GB upgrade option on the current MacBook Pros?

  • hi, I'm joe. this is great Video 5 thumbs up!

I use a Macbook Pro mid 2009 13"MBP 2.53 with 4GB of RAM. Is this crucial SSD faster than the stock SSD you can get in the new 2010 line of MBPs?

Most importantly I am running bootcamp. So am I able to clone the whole mac partition and windows partition at once? Or do I have to do a reinstall.

Most importantly... can it even run windows in bootcamp???

    Please help someone!!

  • Big question: SSD options for Mac are expensive.

Can you replace the internal HDD from an unibody Macbook Pro with an internal SSD ?

  • @Augurae ye thats what this guy has done

  • Hi, Could you tell me what is different about the 128gb disk that makes the write speed so much slower than the 256gb. I have just bought the 128gb (could not afford the 256gb and even this was expensive. Also disappointed because the write speed of the 128gb is slower than quite a few other SSD's on the market. The read spead on SATA 3 is impressive and the same between both disks so why is the write so different?

  • @KlashKit The 128gb drive writes at 140mb/s. I get 110mb/s out of a standard hdd and it isn't even my newest drive and it isn't a high performance one. The 256gb ssd appears to be 210mb/s plus which is far more impressive.

  • @KlashKit really, that ain't that much so maybe you got the wrong drive.

  • @KlashKit So do you guys think you might like to answer?

  • im rly not convinced for most thing ssd doesnt seem to help that much not the mention the ridiculous price and space. I mean msot things already loads rlly quickly on comps.

  • hi Steve, i'm very interested with the C300. my question is where can i get one of those and how much would it cost me? currently i have a 13'in macbook pro similar to the one in the video.

  • @xxlamtinhxx Thanks for your interest in the C300. You can buy it today from Crucial (see the link in the video description) in 256 or 128GB desities for $799 or $499, respectively.

  • @MicronTechnology The 128gb version is one of the slowest writing drives out there. Not much quicker than a HDD and certainly nowhere as fast as the 256gb version. Not impressed Micron/Crucial

  • @MicronTechnology the only advantage ssds give is noiselessness and reduced lag time , it is not a superfast memory drive.

  • Ordering for my Macbook Pro NOW thanks to this video. Nicely done. I'm vastly more interested in these real-world-type tests than nit-picking about garbage collection. Thanks for the video!
