there is no democracy or freedom down there...only republican and corruption. fighting and unrest riots,im Nicaraguan-American and the last time i went there was in 2009 when Ortega was in power but i dont want to go back until Ortega steps down from office. he was president in the 80s. 2006 and now today (reelections from a couple months ago but won by fraud) which means he has officially violated the constitution. now its all a dictatorship.
Vividly remember watching a video of the shooting on the evening news, I was horrified and it was nothing like shown here, Bill was lying face down on the street when shot by the Nicaraguan soldier..
The Sandinistas never gave a shit about the people of Nicaragua any more than Somoza. They were being equipped by the Cubans via Soviet arms suppliers. So that the communists could gain a foothold on North America.
fear fuled paranoia and ignorance...ppl need to be free to make their own choices to pursue our own self intrest...which makes the world a better place,
he is actuallly right. Somoza actually went to the US Congress with an exhibit (Rifles, guns, rocktets, etc) that had various communist countries' crests on them. The Sandinistas became Soviet-aligned in 1980. THAT IS ENOUGH PROOF
I never understood why Washington has hated Nicaragua so much. Walker invaded in the 19th century, marines invaded twice in the 20th, and then installed a puppet government that never cared for the people. It's hard to get up when you are getting frequently beat up by a bigger kid. My heart goes out to the Nicaraguan people.
I concur, but he was still worthless piece of human being who got what he deserved. Kind of what Mike Echanis did under Somoza in the late 70s. Just another bucanneer that got what he deserved.
The movie is called Under Fire (1983), starring Nick Nolte, Joanna Cassidy, Ed Harris, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Gene Hackman. Brilliant film that gets better with each passing year.
I just read about this in The Death of Ben Linder: The Story of a North American in Sandinista Nicaragua by Joan Kruckewitt, and according to that, Bill Stewart was shot behind the right ear as he lay on the ground?
And the Somozas stole that money and property, and the family has the nerve to whine to this day. That family was nothing more than a parasite upon the people of Nicaragua.
WTF?! Ruthless dictators backed the imperial superpower, America, can never be a "great hope" for a better life. The current situation in Nicaragua is a direct result of that.
The end of the Somozas dynasty was a great hope for a better life por the people of Nicaragua. Now Nicaragua is whole mess and fell from the frying pan to the flames.
WoW! Very powerful words of the Nicaraguan lady... But, 100% True. It did not hurt the world as long as Somoza was killing poor Nicaraguans, until the death of a single American reporter 50 years later. Had the reporter been killed sooner, maybe rich nations could have started hating Somoza style evils sooner!

Daniel Ortega overthrew the corrupt, brutal Somoza regime. 30 years later Ortega is elected and becomes as corrupt as Somoza.
Power corrupts.

Does anyone know what movie this is from? I'm researching the Sandinista Revolution and this looks like an interesting adaptation.
