As an American, many of us grew up being taught to listen to it in silence, to give our respect to the anthem and the flag. I mean, I would love for us to be like the Canadians, but I think both reactions are respectful and patriotic. And I agree, it is very difficult to sing our anthem.
This is exactly why I agree with not broadcasting the national anthem at USA sporting events. We don't care. We'd rather watch beer and car commercials. The Star Spangled Banner is forced on Americans. Oh Canada is celebrated by Canadians. We southerners are wrong.
I wish crowds at US major pro sports games (NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA, etc.) sang aloud the "Star Spangled Banner" with the performer(s) as Canadians would to "O Canada" like in this video and at other NHL games in Canada.
Why don't crowds in the United States of America do the same thing?!?
@BrownBrother27 I know what you're saying, but in my opinion, "Oh Canada" is about 10 times EASIER to sing that "The Star Spangled Banner". Maybe that's one reason
we in the states don't sing it with the performers. It's just too damn difficult to hit all of those notes !
I thought we Americans have constant pride in our country and singing "The Star Spangled Banner" WITH performer(s) at sports games is a way to present our love for the USA.
Not all Americans have the vocals of Mariah Carey or Brian McKnight I am fully aware of that but you don't need such vocals to sing "The Star Spangled Banner".
At MLB games? Are you sure you're not confusing the Star Spangled Banner with "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"? I thought like other major sports leagues (NFL, NHL, NBA) spectators remain silent WHILE the presenters perform "The Star Spangled Banner" The primary exception is Blackhawks fans at United Center where cheering and claps happen.
If such spectators sing it's likely they sing to themselves and NOT aloud like in this video or Canadian crowds at NHL games.
I saw the video but the spectators at the United Center were cheering and applauding DURING the presentation of "The Star Spangled Banner" NOT singing it along with the presenter in unison.
@BrownBrother27 um yeah and? making a raucous to show your love for the USA is just as patriotic and awesome to watch as people attempting to sing the national anthem and failing miserably
@BrownBrother27 YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jim Corneilsen's awesome at the UC. The UC erupts when the National Anthems being played. Even when a team from up North's visiting us, they still have respect for O Canada as well.
@BrownBrother27 For one thing, the Canadian national anthem is much, much easier to sing. Even professional singers have a hard time singing the U.S. national anthem, with its range of an octave and a half. If the U.S. had a more singer-friendly national anthem, more Americans would likely be inclined to sing it. This may seem slightly blasphemous, but the U.S. deserves a better national anthem than the one it has. How about My County 'Tis of Thee?
@BrownBrother27 Try going to the United Center to a Hawks game............ It is THE loudest arena when Jim Corneilsen songs the National Anthem. Even when a Canadien NHL teams visitin.,,,, the fans still sing O Canada and sing along with ours as well.
Yup I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I think that her versions of both anthems are terrible. I just don't like her voice I suppose. I've heard these anthems sung beautifully by others. She just takes them and makes them dull and boring. How others like this, I can't see it. Just my 2 cents!
Beautiful rendition of both the US and Canadian anthems by Alanis! What a terrific way to represent her dual citizenship. I'm proud to be an American by birth! Although, I adore O Canada when sung in French and English.
Im American, but I actually love 'O Canada" better then our "Star Spangled Banner." I like it when it is sung in English and French. "O Canada" is my 2nd best Anthem in the World, right after the former Soviet Union, and current Russian Anthem, which is powerful.
the Canadian Anthem is so beatifull, alanis morisette singing still more beatifull, i woul like to make a travel to canada, hope one day, Greetings from Brazil
see. not all canadians are assholes like in Montreal. At least in Ottawa they dont boo the Star Spangled Banner. And in Boston we actually like Hearing O Canada.
@ooxcfhxoo The US anthem was booed in Montreal during the start of the Iraq war, an illegal war that has killed thousands of innocent women and children. THAT is what Habs fans don't like. Get a grip on reality.
No he didn't. Watch the video again. He said that the Senators beat the Montreal Cananadians. The reporter at the very beginning says "... Lets listen to Ottawa public address announcer, Stuart Schwartz"
@hwllll Canada has TWO official languages: English and French. It is often sung in both languages. Ottawa is on the border with Quebec, the French-speaking part of Canada. Lots of the Sens fans are French.
