  • im 12 and i understood all that.

  • @evilfindish sometimes the smallest hit takes down the giant. that was an analogy.

  • Emacs vs Vim flame war: GO!

  • Finally, a realistic hacking scene.

  • fuck me, I understood all of that, bravo for not scripting some random matrix binary shit!

  • Apache is a web server, to the guy that asked (on mobile)

  • It kinda makes me want to learn some programming&stuff.

  • Great movie, but Jesse Eisenberg's Zuckerberg is NOTHING like the real Zuckerberg haha

  • wats an Apache....? is it an Indian? why does he want to hack Indians?

  • Give me 500+ thumbs up! Watching this makes me want to make billions of dollars and have sex with hot Asian students!

  • this scene not only made me want to learn computer programing but also computer science in general

  • @whatsup89100 This movie makes me want to read the Talmud.

  • Let the hacking begin

  • I really think theyre overestimating how smart ole Zucky is.

  • Y U NO GET THEIR NAMES WITH THEIR IMAGES????

  • KDE 3 FTW !!!

  • Comment removed

  • It made me laugh his solution to the second database was to save the whole page. It works, but its surprisingly simple solution, but often they're the best

  • This was my favourite part of the film, as it is all 99% accurate. Apparently some of the script was lifted from the real life Zuckerberg's diary

  • this entire scene was taken word for word from mark zuckerbergs livejournal from 2003. google it and u can see for yourself

  • I had to pause this a few times to get it all in hahaha

  • What happened to Dunster?

  • the reason why imma CS major

  • I only can't understand one thing: if he downloaded all the images, and used on Facemash only pics of girls - than how did he sort out females from males? That would take some time!

  • @microkorger Are you sure, that he downloaded all images? Look at 00:09... this is the Apache index of the directory photos/female, which means it's the directory with all the pics of the female students (= girls).

  • @AlphaVoice10 Thanks! I don't undertand anything in the web technology, so I didn't know that.

  • "I can save the page and Mozilla will save all the images for me." Huh? I thought he used wget?

  • This is movie inspires me, Mark Zuckerberg is Amazing after seeing this movie i registered for Facebook..

  • its not difficult its maybe difficult of course

  • i understood about half of what he was talking about...

  • I'm an Accounting major and I could never understand how you computer people keep up with all this.

  • I sort of dislike how he minimally explains something that is extremely easy to do and shouldn't be considered "hacking" at all such that people who don't understand will think he is pro.

  • @evilfindish yeah, pretty much macro'd copy paste of images

  • @evilfindish I agree. It's minimal hacking anyway. Real hacking is pouring over x86 for hours on end throughout the night.

  • @evilfindish

Still damn impressive that they even mention Wget and PHP, oh and the fact that you can clearly see Emacs being used.

  • Great scene, fantastic editing. But please...get rid of the stupid subtitles.

  • Whoa. Well. I have no idea what the fuck he just said.

  • I used to work that hard just to scrap free porn off the Internet. I never thought it was 'hacking'.

  • made me want to script xhtml lol

  • It's called "In Motion"

  • Comment removed

  • Regardless if you feel if this qualifies as malicious hacking or not, it is still completely accurate; which is surprising to find in a piece of cinematography.

  • How could i learn to understand this?

  • @ashwinhendrix Switch to Gentoo as your operating system, solve all occuring obstacles by yourself with google searches, get a tutorial and install LAMP (manually from source), read in the man page (you should know what they are by now) of emacs, read some example php-scripts and the html-sources generated by them. Read an introduction to PERL and search for "weaknesses MySQL" with google. Basically: Make up for your missed computergeek childhoold.

  • @ashwinhendrix Install Gentoo.

  • NO way KDE can work so fast....

  • My friends spoof of this is so funny, check it out on my vids

  • I really wish this had won Best Picture.

  • He must be hacking the mainframe. Pity he didn't enhance to see the killers reflection off someones belt buckle

  • Thats not hacking, hes just using programs to download a bunch of pics at the same time. You could go to each page and save the pic yourself. Why does he want all those pics?? Its pointless...

  • @entehrend he want to hack those pics for his website. the facemash. its matching girls pictures from different university . just watch the whole video and you'll get what i mean

  • this is not as hard as it seems....just learn HTML language and you will be able to hack anything

  • HAHA! I found the desktop theme he was using! Its called Keramik.

    KDE FTW!!!!!!!

  • Best scene in the film.

  • Perl. Heathen.

  • Thanks for the subtitles, I swear I didn't understand a word of this scene when I watched it in theatres :)

  • This is such a fucking legit scene. True, he's not really hacking (surely intentional hyperbole on his part), but rather using exploits and back-doors, but this scene is still so fucking accurate for ~2003 website security. This is just one reason the film is so epochal.

  • @abvflux It's verbatim to his real blogs back in Fall 2003, so of course it's realistic :P

  • what is the music playing please?

  • @TheNin974 "In Motion" by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor. It's the most popular song in The Social Network original soundtrack.

  • @Edude117 In Motion is the only song that shows us the success of the Jews, its teachings from the Talmud and Kabbalah. Judaism and those in it are successful for a reason. Not even the Chinese and Japanese have gone that far. There is some secrets that we do not know and many of the people who this movie do not see it and will simply call me nuts.

  • Wait, that's not how you hack in hollywood, you're supposed to have a camera flying around in a virtual cirty where the houses are built of crappy java codes that you can't recognize.

Also, you need atleast two people on the keyboard and seeing how there aren't any "bleep or bloop" sounds i'd say this is a fake

  • Just <3 this scene.

  • HACK THE WORLD !!!!!!

  • He's so lucky his computer is so fast. Lol at my laggy laptop n_n

  • he is using a sql injection on a database

  • he is using a sql injection to go into a database

  • what movie is this?

  • @WNxRadeon it says it right in the title of the vid

  • @CrazySailor637 yes i figured that out :P

but the way it's discribed it sounds like the scene is called like that, not the movie.

i would do it like this: The Social Network - Hacking Scene.

  • wow!!!When I first saw the movie i had no idea what he was doing.!!!Amazingly enough now this seems like kids stuff + the php part!!!

  • the only realistic hacking scene i've ever seen, usually in movies they just randomly type really fast and use big words in a way that doesen't even make sense.

  • @uechika21 except this isn't hacking... anyone can make a script to download all teh youtube thumbnails or something

  • @darkfox1990

But Lowell and Dunster don't have open directories to their facebook, Lowell requires a username/password combo and Dunster doesn't have a directory at all. Meaning Zuckerburg had to hack the username/password combo (sql maybe?) and then somehow find a way to gain access to the wired php file that Dunster searches connect you to

  • @darkfox1990

That's basically what hacking is. People make hacking seem all mysterious, but in real life, it's mostly righting perl scripts, injecting SQL statements in the right fields, typing javascript in the url or even guessing the right password.

  • @KayleLang i'm not talking about how he did it... talking about what he did... which was downloading stuff that was openly available except for dunster.. everything else was stuff they threw in there to make it seem like he did some hacking... though it's still better researched than usual movie crap.

  • @uechika21 Well, they actually used Zuckerberg's blog verbatim from the night this happened, so I'd hope it'd be realistic ;)

  • the song is "In Motion" by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

  • I'm here hacking your comments

  • the hacking scene n you hacking it up..... Genius, not quite!

  • thumbs up if understand every SINGLE THING without googling it XP

  • @officegunner Yay nerds! I didn't understand, but I wanted too :(

  • 15 psn members were pissed from seeing the hackers that hacked the network and Dr.Hax is pissed because he hates hackers and hopes his moniter will finally hit him (of course, the psn network is back online by now)

  • Comment removed

  • what song is playing in the background?

  • This movie was great, but you must understand a lot of this stuff in it was bogus. That would include this scene.

  • @bondp99 KDE

  • That last one is how Citibank was hacked last week.

  • @FireStormBaller It would be (extremely) poor security if the intent of youtube was not to be able to allow you to do as such. Anyway, this convo is going nowhere fast and I'm sure we both agree that I won this argument so might as well go on to better things.

  • @SiegeX1 It wouldn't be poor security if it didn't allow me to make comment. I win, you lose.

  • let the trolling begin

  • oh, it all makes sense now

  • its cut perfectly - to cut the bs out ! good job !

  • Definitely the only time that wget or emacs will ever be mentioned in a screenplay. Wonder if someone can figure out how to incorporate cURL and vi into some clever monologue this too...

  • Dennou Coil

  • His laptop is vaio, Sony TR-Series.

    cool little laptop.

    i found one here

    cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260777483795

  • How exactly did he get into Lowell when it requires a username and password?

  • @AndroidPolitician - Like he said, no intrusion detection. He could have brute-forced that puppy with a password generator, assuming they used unsalted passwords he coulda just forked some perl thread off in the background trying random combos until he successfully got through while he was working on the other houses. Odd that it wouldn't take him that long though, I'll agree with you there.

  • @Markipelago

It's more the password generation, I always thought brute force was useless or incredibly ineffective.

  • @AndroidPolitician pause at 0:33 and read his post on his screen, he's guessing Student IDs

  • he's a graffiti artist and hacking is his art.

  • @MrDarkHawk

In Motion by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

  • NAME OF THE SONG I CAN'T FUCKING FIND IT

  • what OS is he using???? Please ANswer.

  • @Scientia96 It's a Linux flavor and, more specifically, he's using the KDE environment. So it's probably something along the lines of Kubuntu or Debian. I'm not a big fan of KDE, but it's used in several large distros.

  • @Scientia96 Mandrake/Mandriva

  • I'll come back later lol

  • OMG YES! Best scene in the whole movie!

  • I get so much inspiration from this scene

  • Does anybody know what type of marker (or something like this) Eduardo used to draw his formula on the window?

  • @LinozFromSPB I think it's called a "grease marker".

  • This is how nerds party!

  • @Zewtie *geeks

  • @Zewtie LOL, it is actually, I'm a big nerd.

  • whats this song called?

  • @leetchicken In Motion, by Trent Reznor

  • @Schutte2717 THANKS!

  • I tried using wget once.

    Didn't work out.

  • @mec567 you probably just don't know how to use it. it's petty awesome if you take some time to learn it

  • @leetchicken I need to get Linux to use it, but, like, I don't want to space 51GB's of space to download it.

  • @mec567 stfu newfag

  • goddamnit why did you cut out the party scenes (and so poorly at that)? The contrast + the music make this the best scene in the entire movie.

  • @MrWaeseL I think he did it because the video is about the hacking scene, not about the party scene.

  • ok, which part of that scene was english?

  • @slaxls1 it take a real geek to understand this. why did you even watch or look for this video?

  • @leetchicken cuz i freakin love this movie. and i think its one of the best most relevant movies of the decade.

  • @slaxls1 i didn't mean the movie itself. i meant this video.

  • @leetchicken No. It takes someone who understands, that's all. This isn't ALL that complicated, considering the fact back in 2004 websites security wasn't half of what it is today. Back then you could easily run perl scripts to break the servers' defenses, or try SQL injections. Today, it takes great programming knowledges and a lot of time to do all of this. Exploits and stuff.

  • @CHPatCH not really, most of this shit is still the same. all we do now is SQL injection which is piss easy as well

  • @1ofmeful Zuckerburg actually said "breakout emacs and modify that perl script", it was taken straight out of his blog. Also, he wasn't talking about modifying a perl script on the webserver, he was talking about the perl script he wrote for another house that used wget to download pictures. He would need to modify it to only grab 20 pics at a time for this current house.

  • @SiegeX1 exactly. 3/4 of what he's doing is some wget function calls to automatize his tasks. All I do not understand is how the hell he breached the security of the first server with that Apache indexes crap

  • @CHPatCH Not really so much hacking as it was poor security on the part of the web-admin for that house. If you pass a path to a directory to a webpage that has indexes enabled for that directory (i.e. example.com/some/directory) it will return a list of all the files in that directory. Presumably, all Zuckerburg did was pass the path to the *directory* where all the pictures were located and was returned a list of every picture in that directory. Downloading those was then "kids stuff"

  • @SiegeX1 As long as it has any security, then it's hacking.

  • @FireStormBaller That's the point, there was *no* security. Passing 'pics/' instead of '/pics/somepic.jpg' as a URL to a website that has Indexes enabled is hardly considered hacking by any definition of the word.

  • @SiegeX1 You said that it was poor security, which means there is security, and now you're saying there was no security. Basically, you just contradicted yourself.

  • @FireStormBaller No security, poor security, whatever we call it, it was basically non-existent. in either case, it still doesn't change my last statement that it was no more "hacking" then you typing in youtube.com in the address bar to make this comment.

  • @SiegeX1 Me typing in youtube.com to make the comment has no security.

  • @FireStormBaller exactly

  • @SiegeX1 Not poor security.

  • Unlike most movies, I'm glad that in the social network they actually used real tech talk instead of that fake mumbo jumbo that the supposed computer geniuses mutter in most hollywood scenes. The only problem that I would have is when he says "breakout emacs and modify that perl script" because even though you can modify perl scripts to change the way that the page acts and displays images/content, you can't just view the scripts by viewing the source or WGET (unless the page is insecure.)

  • @1ofmeful I think the perl script was his own tool, not something on the remote server.

  • thanks for butchering the scene! why post a raped scene?

  • @PoopPeeSandwich thats why i thumbed it down. this was the best scene in the movie and he edited it because i guess 1:26 was just the right length. boo-urns. if i get the time i'm gonna upload the entire scene.
