  • The Iliad is really boring though.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey; the Lion King is a pretty cool movie. :p

  • Fucking uncultured cocksucking aspies.

  • What is the song in the video called?

  • Homestuck: 7446+

I have never been more ashamed to be a Homestuck fan . . .

  • @Icerama108 I think Homestuck is brilliant. The fans are what annoy me.

  • @ShirConnery The fans that post over 7446 words on a half baked media review site.

  • @Icerama108 Exactly. The comic itself is clever, engaging, and showcases some excellent storytelling.

  • 13k words for nostalgia chick? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Many of these comparisons were hilarious, and some were disturbing like more words for Glee than the Beatles? But some comparisons weren't really that shocking since they were one mainstream pop culture thing compared to another equally mainstream pop cultured thing.

  • Mario 64 music? Damn, son. You must be turning into a troper.

  • The reason The Shining has no pages for Nightmare Fuel is because Nightmare Fuel is supposed to be only for horror in things that aren't meant to be scary.

The problem here is that someone listed Pokémon under High Octane Nightmare Fuel, when it's clearly an E-rated game.

  • Also Minecraft is awesome fuck you

  • >Monty Python page has less words. auuuuggggggghhhhhhhtttt

  • That's a bad one. Two and a half man is the ONLY TELEVISION SHOW THAT IS WATCHABLE right now. Of mice and men is an awesome book. Both of them are badass. Both Monty Python and Family guy are awesome.

Rape is love BIG TIME. It takes some special kind of balls to go ahead and rape a women. That's why badboy and rapists are super popular despite being in prison. The woman will always choose the rapist over the awkward nerd. That sucks but it is reality.

  • @BluBoulzor Woman here: I'D RUN AWAY FROM A RAPIST AND RUN INTO THE ARMS OF THE AKWARD NERD. Do you have an account on NiceGuy.com?

  • @AzureMagic I sure have. My mom set it up for me and controls it. One time a 500 lbs women tried to seduce me and my mom told me she was my special one. I bombarded her with gifts and I tried to apologize everytime I did not told her she was really sexy. I almost got killed when she sat on me at christmas.

And a 10 years old badboy stole her from me. That's why I hate them all. Man 10 years old rapist, what a world to live in.

I'm totally serious by the way.

  • well to be fair ICO is complete shit

  • @cowabungasheeit Now you're just trying to hurt me.

  • Well, for some of those, i t's... a single work, or short series, compared to a *decades long series*, or something with a ton of medium. Not a fair comparison.

  • Let's be fair with most of these. The majority of the "frivolous" articles have a ton more media than those those they are being compared to.

Pokemon, for example, has over fifty games compared to the Godfather's three movies. That's not even scratching the surface of the anime.

  • @HipsterFilmsForever This is of interest to me.

  • 1:13

"Fan Boy=Don't worry, it's not always this bad."

    Hmmmmm.....

  • WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY

  • Rape is Love...please get me a nuke so I can kill these motherfuckers who think rape is love.

  • @blacktigerpaw1 For the record, the actual page for "Rape is love" is fairly adamant about rape not being love, and when a writer DOES use it, it's generally frowned upon. Of course with some of the people you see on this thing it's easy to assume it's being literal.

  • @dxmagma True.

  • @blacktigerpaw1 Actually I think the Rape is Love page has a note where this DOES NOT HAPPEN IN RL.

  • @AzureMagic Lol, I know, but still: rape is a serious subject.

  • It's a fact bad things are easier to write about. Also ASS PIES.

  • @niceboar Well, I wouldn't say things like The Lion King or Mass Effect are bad, but compared to some of the things that should have more words, yeah.

  • @Ashkihyena I wasn't even being serious but honestly, how do you expect an article on Citizen Kane, a single movie, to have more words than a series that's been running for almost a decade?

    >This one is mostly for fun.

    sums it up

  • @niceboar Entire dissertations have been written on why Citizen Kane is one of the greatest movies of all time, the analysis ranges from cinematography, imagery, subtext etc.

All Tvtropes can do is say 'HURR DURR KANE IS A JERK WITH A HEART OF GOLD AMIRITE'. They're fucking retarded weeaboos with no knowledge of high art and culture.

  • Comment removed

  • @lmao2cats No one in their right mind would think TVtropes is for postgraduate dissertations. Or any serious analysis. It's simply not in the scope of the website, which is limited to simple lists of devices. If you want to criticize based on that, so be it, however it doesn't necessarily follow the users have no knowledge of high art and culture, although that very well may be the case.

  • I'd argue that Minecraft is good enough to actually deserve a higher word-count than Ico (it's basically the result of one guy being ricockulously dedicated to making video-game legoland and then making it into a survival horror), but the rest of them can just go fuck themselves. This is why no-one with half a brain goes anywhere near that site.

  • 0:46 INTERNET SOLDIERZ REJOICE

  • Wait i dont understand. This video is pointing out that is infested with information that is just popular and the fanboys want their crap to be seen by everyone or not?

Also i noticed that "Rape is that special kind of evil" has less words than the "Rape is Love" simply maybe for the sheer number of examples that the movies, literature and FAN FICTION keep doing over and over because they think they can pull it off. Unless some1 thinks different. Please enlighten me

  • It's not how many words you use, it's the quality of words used.

Granted, TV tropes can't properly attempt either, but still.

  • How can LOST have less wild mass guessing than... anything?

  • When I was looking at "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" on TV Tropes, I wondered why would a classic have such little description. The book was the trope namer of "Fence Painting", so it must have more tropes then that. Now I understand why :(.

  • Hmm, Yeah, Nostalgia Chick isn't really intellectual nirvana, but I don't really see what makes Mega64 any less frivolous, considering they are both entertainment on the internet.

  • I wont defend the really creepy and appalling shit that happens on TV Tropes but the Article on Useful Notes On Suicide does do a good job of being informative about suicide talking about seriously negative misconceptions media creates, how to spot potential suicides, and how to prevent it in a suprisingly deep and satisfying way,

The prevention page is shorter in comparison because it is just numbers.

However if I ever find out that Suicide as Comedy is longer they can go to hell.

  • @Rawksyousocks Well maybe the people just cant pull a successful way to prevent suicide and maybe by knowing that the page exist they can try to contribute with more experienced people in the field. Also if Suicide as Comedy happens to be longer then its the media that keeps doing it over and over in the same way that some asshole films womans masturbating in front of children and calls it "Its not Porn, its Art"

  • That guy with the glasses does not need THAT fucking many pages.

  • Agreed, they have no talent to be worth of that many tropes but when you try to compete with quality with a life time achievement, some asshole with more time in its hand will do more crap per minutes to entertain the lowest common denominator. Dont you agree Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg? (Steven was the producer of the Transformer movies so that means that he LET michael to give is crap to the world and receive fundings to do it so he is guilty too)

  • @EvilCommunistMuslim5

nothing says classic like imaginary animal cruelty, card games, and the power of friendship huh you illiterate fuckface?

  • @tehloop Oh please, as if some crusty old guy spending half a book sitting around on boring ocean looking for a whale is a compelling plot (oooh, the big scary whale is white! How speshul, I'm soo scared).

What the hell is Wuthering Heights anyway? Is that some kind of western show that only takes place on some rotting farmhouse and the overarcing plot of the series is that some guy stole the protagonist's chickens and it takes him 100 episodes to decide to go after him?

  • @EvilCommunistMuslim5

funny, you just decribed pokemon and yu-gi-oh exactly, you brain-damaged manchild.

  • @tehloop "TROLLING" MOTHERFUCKERS, CAN YOU SPOT IT!?

  • 0 words for The Shining Nightmare Fuel?

    FUCK YOU TVTROPES

  • @boitahaki Nightmare Fuel is currently called Accidental Nightmare Fuel, and that's what it's always been about.

Yeah, fuck TV Tropes for not talking about all the accidental scares in the wholesome family movie the Shining.

  • @EponymousKid nice failed sarcasm there, kid, but I am not a troper faggot like yourself

  • @boitahaki You don't need to be a troper to understand the difference when the top rated comment is replying to a comment explaining it, genius.

  • @EponymousKid guess what, retard? thats not a top rated comment, thats a comment the puloader replied to, and I read it after posting, so shut the fuck up

  • someone on the SomethingAwful forums went through and counted the words on all of the different Homestuck pages. You put 7446+ words

    try 230,000

  • The wild mass guessing page for pokemon is that long? I thought the only wmg theory surrounding pokemon was the Ash coma theory.

  • name of the song?

  • As a Mass Effect fanboy, even I'm fucking ashamed of the word difference between the articles on the Illiad and Mass Effect.

  • Humans Are Good: 1075 words.

    Humans Are Bastards: 23822 words.

The Troper Tales for the second one would have been hilarious to read.

  • I think these nothing in the fact than tv shows, videogames, fantasy books, animation or comics have lots of discussions, analysis and research about them. Lots of them are now cultural classics and are very influencial in their own medium or serve as cultural ambassadors. But i agree, it's odd to see that MegaMan or Harry Potter are saturated in tropes (even if they deserved it) when these is nothing about Shakespeare, K.Dick, Cobain, Mozart, Kurosawa, or Kubrick.

  • Well i guess since Digimon is a 51x20minutes series meant mainly for a young audience (who cries more easily i dare to say) when good guys die sometime and the Schindler's List a 195minutes long movie mainly for an adult and more emotionally challenged audience. I'm not diminishing the emotional power of this movie, it's indeed an powerful film about our sad recent History. But some technical parameters like these can explain why some articles have suprisingly more words than others.

  • Eh. People are gonna write about what they like.

  • @romzomcom

Way to prove Goggs' point without realizing it, you stupid, shallow waste of sperm

  • @moneymandate cry more faggot

  • By the way, there is one troper that thinks that Shakespeare's work is shit compared to Animorphs.

    I wish I were kidding

  • Some of these comparisons are right-on, but others reveal that the maker of the vid likes some pretty low-brow media him/herself. Stephen King and Mega64 being compared favorably to the Nostalgia Critics says volumes about the creator's (poor) taste. Monty Python's Flying Circus? LOST? Fucking LOST? These are the positive examples that you don't think have gotten enough attention?

P.S. Schindler's List is overrated, exploitative oscar bait. It was produced by SPIELBERG, for christ's sake.

  • @dark7element *bong hits*

  • @dark7element We don't care about taste, here. King and Mega64 have made more works for a longer time than the Nostalgia Critic or the Nostalgia Chick.

King and Spielberg's influences are more powerful in our contemporary worldwide culture than some internet shows or toy selling cartoons. And if you can't make the difference between Lost and Pokémon in term of mysteries, hidden plot points and enigma between (the category was "Wild Mass Guessing"), you are not someone to be taken seriously.

  • Okay, that was... wow.

  • There is another (minor) reason why people don't like to write about literature in TV Tropes: TV Trope's homebrew wiki software is downright abyssal and is not suited for literature. You can only put one quote per entry, and that quote has to be at the very end. So you cannot write a commentary, illustrate with a quotation from the book, then go on with further commentaries or more quotes. The best you can do is to put a bullet point AFTER your first entry and continue -- but that is ugly.

  • @fslpoon Well, the wiki isn't an essay, though.

  • @fslpoon So a site based on analyzing media is terrible at covering the most important form of fictional media even in terms of the basic software design.

  • @TrueEvilBob It's not based on analyzing media, it's based on codifying and categorizing it. Meaningful analysis is left to the experts.

  • Okay, I take that back. I had only watched about half of it when I made that comment. The Shining having less High Octane Nightmare Fuel than Pokemon Mystery Dungeon?! (Kirby having more Nightmare Fuel is acceptable, seeing as how that's mostly for unintentionally scary things.) Lost having less wacko theories than Pokemon?! SCHINDLER'S LIST HAVING LESS SAD MOMENTS THAN DIGIMON?!?! OH FUCK THIS.

  • @DaionusThe23rd

The Team Fortress 2 Nightmare Fuel page is sad.

  • @RomZomCom I haven't seen it myself, but I would assume that a darkly humorous game about two teams of mercenaries could have a few unintentionally scary things.

That or some tropers are pussies and can't handle dark humor.

  • @DaionusThe23rd No, it's dumb shit like "AUSTRALIUM IS SCARY" or "Saxton Hale's abs make me wet the bed :<"

  • Its sad, but I suppose it's not quite as bad as wikigroaning, since many of the things that were being compared were "thing that happened in real life" and "fictional thing", the latter of which would get more tropes written about it on account of the fact that its easier to note a trope occurring in fiction than in reality, and the fact that some tropes are impossible to have occur in reality.

  • You know, if you assholes are really that butthurt about classic literature works having fewer examples, then ADD THEM YOURSELF.

    It's a wiki, it's not hard.

  • Hey, this series, and this video specifically, are briefly mentioned on the ED.ch page on TV Tropes now. Uhh...Congratulations?

  • I'm actually glad Kesha has a higher word count than Kurt Cobain. It means people are actually moving on from his whiny drivel.

  • My heart broke in two when I saw Glee had more words than The Beatles page.

  • @momoandmiz mine and yours, buddy. Mine and Yours...

  • This video is a REAL punch to the gut. But one we all needed.

  • at least real life is on the 'trope saturated' list

  • The Moby Dick, the Brother/Sister Incest and Everything's better with chickens entries really speak volumes of the interests and priorities of the average troper.

  • ... to all tropers: STOP CARING ABOUT USELESS SHIT.

  • @koook160 then who could we laugh at and spank with moon rocks

  • It's sad, the entries for actual intellectual literature on Youtube or either very short or nonexistent. If Fast Eddie wants his site taken seriously from an academical viewpoint, he needs to make sure that the site ends up being more than just a pop-culture jizz-fest.

  • @inferno232

I don't think any admins wants TV Tropes to be taken seriously from an academic viewpoint.

  • @fslpoon Correct. As flawed as TV Tropes is, as long as I've been there it's never tried to advertise itself as a serious site.

Not to say some people there don't treat it as such, but still.

  • I've never read Homestuck or MSPA or whatever but judging it purely by it's fans it's on a par with atomic weapons or ethnic cleansing in terms of being a world-shaking atrocity

  • haha oh wow youtube really fucked up for me on this

  • @CrazyGoggs to be fair, despite what the front page says tropes are essentially cliches and there's far more negative ones then positive ones. On top of these most truly great works defy the trappings and expected plot lines, so their pages would be shorter. Especially something like Ico, as there's really not a ton to write about.

  • Comment removed

  • 1:15 got me.

YEAH THE HOLOCAUST WAS BAD BUT WHAT ABOUT WHEN THAT DIGIMON DIED

  • How can Real Life be a trope?

That explains why the fuck these people run around thinking they are fictional archetypes with magical powers and dumb catchphrases and will die fat and alone.

  • Actually, they think of it as "trope saturated" which makes it even more sad.

  • @machriderx Real Life isn't a trope, but it's considered a "work". You do know that things happen in reality, right? Bill Walton was frequently injured in his pro basketball career, thus an example of Game Breaking Injury, for instance.

  • More fun:

    Boku No Pico vs. Shiloh

All the pages of Dynasty Warriors vs. Romance of the Three Kingdoms

  • At least James Bond is trope saturated, that series must be like, the antithesis of the stereotypical troper.

  • why'd you compare ico and minecraft aside from them both being shitty games?

  • This reaaaaally gives you an impression of their priorities

  • I can think of one word why this is. Autism. That is all.

  • Fuck! I was hoping to get through the video without rape or incest coming up. Obviously, this is expecting too much from tropers.

  • Fuck, this one just makes me mad.

  • This isn't even exclusive to TV Tropes. This is just a small sampling of what people in today's society considers to be relevant.

The classics are dead. And we have killed them.

  • @Audiohol4m33s Yeah. Inception is currently 8th on IMDB's top 250. The Dark Knight is #10. Both are apparently better than Goodfellas (15), Casablanca (17), and Rear Window (21).

And Toy Story 3 (33) is better than Apocalypse Now (36), Citizen Kane (37), and To Kill a Mockingbird (59).

  • @EponymousKid

But The Dark Knight, Inception, and Toy Story 3 are all great movies. Obviously overrated, but still definitely deserving of recognition.

Now, if Transformers 2 or Avatar were way at the top, then we'd have a REAL problem.

  • @321cheeseman Fair enough. I didn't mean to imply that they aren't good.

However, Avatar is on the list, at number 169; this would mean it's better than Dog Day Afternoon (180), Gandhi (183), The Exorcist (204), and A Streetcar Named Desire (205)

  • Hey now, Mass Effect might actually deserve all that posting. It's no Iliad, but it is a huge series with a lot of plot... Still kind of sad to see all this, though.

  • the rape tropes comparison really hammered it home how much overlap there is between the troper and Love-shy populations

    HINT IT'S CLOSE TO 100%

  • @Sigerick What is a "Love-shy population"?

  • @Yurochka85

    "Love-shy population" = self-proclaimed "asexual"

  • The glee bit was honestly funny.

But yeah, this is why Tv Tropes just confuses me at times. EVERYTHING is Nightmare Fuel, everything is a Tearjerker, and everything is a Crowning Moment of Awesome.

  • @YoungNastyParsee welcome to the bottom of human expression; things can only be described with hyperbole and tired, beaten to death phrasing on how Subject is the Subjectest Subject in the History of Ever. If you wish to contribute, please put on your Filking-hat and trenchcoat and write a 100-word essay on how a My Little Ponies episode was simultaneously incredibly frightening and arousing.

  • @WorldsFattestRobot Well there's that one where they have various transformations happening to them and that appeals to people on both sides of the oh God the cancer is inside me.

  • Regarding Nightmare Fuel: it's a trope for unintentionally scary stuff, not stuff that was meant to be scary in the first place. So it makes sense for The Shining to have no page.

  • @zlpq51 god i don't understand these names they make no sense god hlp djklcdskjldfsdfh

  • @CrazyGoggs If it's any consolation, it recently got renamed to Accidental Nightmare Fuel to make the meaning more apparent.

  • @CrazyGoggs

It's okay. That happens when they suck you into the void.

  • @CrazyGoggs It's been renamed Accidental Nightmare Fuel.

  • @zlpq51 Why not just call it "Unintentionally Scary" or something? (I'm asking you like your some TvTropes deity)

  • Eh. This one wasn't as bad as the others. A lot of the words on these pages also come from people bitching about shit on the page, and people don't tend to bitch about the quality of timeless classics.

  • I wouldn't go as far to call that Power Rangers considering that Turboranger (Carranger was the one to get adapted to PRT) never had a Power Rangers adaptation.

  • Ico is not mainstream. Remember, it's still a video game. Comparing it to Minecraft doesn't seem to flow with the general pace of the video.

  • @speyeker Same with Mega64...ah, why bother.

  • This is something I've always subtly noticed myself, but never called attention to it. I'm glad you did.

  • And, actually, the Nightmare Fuel one for the Shining is correct. Nightmare Fuel is unintentionally horrific material. If anything, it's the trope that needs to be renamed. But the High Octane entry having less words than that for a freakin' Pokemon game is just sad. Crap like that is why I no longer use TVtropes if I can help it.

  • @inferno232 Especially when you consider that High Octane Nightmare Fuel is actually supposed to be about intentional horror.

I'm really hoping those pages go the way of Fetish Fuel, and soon. They add nothing to the site besides the image of tropers as cowardly babies.

  • @EponymousKid Well, I like the IDEA of the Nightmare Fuel page, but I hate the execution. The name is misleading, many of the examples are overblown, and, finally, plenty of them miss the damn point completely. High Octane led me to some classic mindfuck movies like Eraserhead, so I wouldn't want to cut it out, either. If I ran tvTropes, I'd overhaul the damn things and make sure that all examples would require general consensus that they're creepy, instead of that of one paranoid preteen.

  • @inferno232 That actually sounds like a pretty good idea. Like, if there was a voting system or something. Okay, fair enough, it's not completely worthless.

  • @inferno232 The point of Nightmare Fuel is that it highlights things that children find disturbing that aren't meant to be disturbing in execution, and is fascinating from a psychological point of view. The problem is that it's policed very poorly, and would function better in a format like the new Fetish Fuel Wikia, since it really has nothing to do with one particular trope at this point. High Octane, on the other hand, definitely has some hyperbole going on.

  • The "To Kill A Mockingbird" bit is what pisses me off. That and "The Shining". Dammit, people.

  • I can almost excuse the Pokemon thing because that's a franchise that's still ongoing, has a TV show with hundreds of episodes and dozens of games to go off. There's simply a lot more content out there.

...Christ, that Glee thing pisses me off, though.

  • @EponymousKid just because it's there doesn't mean it has to be analyzed.

  • @CrazyGoggs Hey, I said "almost."

  • @EponymousKid true. i mean really this is a dumb bullshit episode but it really makes me wonder how people could go through all this nonsense about pokemon. i mean, i have a feeling it isn't just 13 year olds who really like pokemon that are contributing...or...?

  • @CrazyGoggs Nah, this episode's alright, don't stress.

  • To be fair, MSPA is a lot better than shit like Wuthering Hights.

  • @VarDolzeberg to be fair, i actually could get through wuthering heights

  • @CrazyGoggs

Okay, so you torture yourself with stupid nerd sperg pages AND stupid literature no one cares about. Are you happy with being a masochist?

  • @RomZomCom okay now i liked that book because i learned never to double cross gypsies. it's a very valuable lesson

  • @RomZomCom Every page on TV Tropes is a nerd circlejerk.

Also, "stupid literature no one cares about." You sir, are the reason this exists. You are scum.

  • @noonneimportant

Did you just figure the "nerd circlejerk" part out?

I didn't like Wurthing Heights. Go back to raping Shakespeare, I'll be in the corner raping Nabokov okay

  • @RomZomCom The Iliad and the Odyssey, Huckleberry Finn, hamlet: "stupid literature nobody cares about"

Pokemon, Sonic, Halo: Touchstones of society, to be honored with vast amounts of Bullshit all over the web.

    ...

    Fuck you internet

  • @malleableconcrete

Hamlet sucks and no one cares about the Iliad. Go read Pynchon, you fark.

  • @RomZomCom

"No one cares about the Iliad"

    wow.

  • @malleableconcrete

    >namedrop some old ass epic you've never read to try and elevator yourself above dumb no lifers

    >hope it makes you look smarter than stupid tropers featured

    explainthisbullshit.jpg

  • @RomZomCom My problem is rather more equating the reach and influence of the Iliad over the last two and a half thousand years (it being a formative part of western culture and everything) to that of star wars novels and cheap anime but whatever rocks your boat I guess.

Anyway its good to know that Rom is the arbitrator of what people should and shouldn't care about so I'll take it as objectively true that Shakespeare is shit, Thanks!

  • @malleableconcrete

Oh, wow, now you sperg out on me explaining about some novel your ass read in college (if you've placed yourself through college) about how they're somehow a better person for reading an epic that no one still cares about.

    I smell a butthurt troper.

  • @RomZomCom Projecting hard and making up strawmen but okay thanks bye

  • @malleableconcrete

stop ruining my obscure epic, you're making it so mainstream

  • @RomZomCom okay

  • @RomZomCom

"stupid literature no one cares about"

    Die

  • The Homestuck page is the fucking black hole of TV Tropes.

I like Homestuck, but the fanbase gives the Sonic fanbase a run for it's money.

  • @TextheBored Same here.

  • @TextheBored

I know that every fandom has it's bad side, but honestly, the Homestuck fandom is nowhere near the level of batshit that people make it out to be.

I mean, Sonic fandom has Chris Chan for starters. The worst I've seen from Homestuck fans is pretty much just a lot of porn, and you get that with every fandom. /pointless response

  • This only seems frivolous unless you see the implications: people have collectively spent tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of man-hours writing and rewriting articles about children's cartoons, shitty movies, video games, and sexual perversions.

That time could have been spent working to make a contribution to society, volunteering to help the less fortunate, actually learning the skills for making a good movie or game, or even just striving not to be terrible human beings.

  • @Lanyardish >Implying society would benefit from tropers getting involved in it.

    ...

Greentext doesn't work on youtube. That makes me sad.

  • Did I just read "Rape is Love"? What?

  • This video implies Mass Effect is frivolous.

  • Eh.

  • Oh well, first bad episode had to happen sometime I guess. Obviously new and current media will be more talked about than ancient ones.
