  • soulless pretentious noise for those fans of fretboard gymnastics. Musically says absolutely nothing.

  • I saw this tour,...around 1983-1985. John was supporting his new album,...he had this new,...unheard of bass player named jonas hellborg,...and if you ask me,..he might have stollen the show from john. Why do I say this? Well maybe because alot of bass players come and go,...but jonas is still around today,...26 year's later! I saw this tour at "THE STONE" in San Francisco,..when it was still open.

  • how can he not get annoyed with that little krishna freak on the bass?

  • there is a track from 1984 called jazz. where can i see it live? : D

  • Wow, great clip. JM's obviously really feelin' it... only guy I've seen who can wear pleated pants and yet be so badass. Bill Evans looks like he just stepped out of the gym. Love it.

  • Mahavishnu they are the forerunner of fusion, their music is ahead of its time and John is one heck of guitarist in this genre. Thumbs up!!

  • @norend1954

actually, you can go back to The Count's Jam Band with Coryell for a seminal group in fusion.

RTF was around also; Bill Connor could shred with the bestof them.

  • John's music is still so fresh, so revolutionary, so vibrant, so different, so innovative, so full of love...sheer joy...after such a long time has past. You are by biggest musical inspiration Johm, I love YOU!

  • Dance of maya finishing at the end me thinks

  • IS that a '59 burst JM is playing? Never saw him with one before.

  • oh God, this brings me back to 1984, still have the souvenir T shirt from that great great concert..

  • I saw the Mahavishnu in 1984 John was playing Roland guitar and all the audience got knock out! Adventures in Radioland has good pieces but the entire album is not as good as "MAHAVISHNU". John developed this second album of mahavishnu with the fantastic duo MAC-HELLBORG and after that with his insuperable TRIO!

  • I saw this tour in Chicago, Park West in 85 I believe. I was impressed only by Jonas and John. Billy was not on the tour unfortunately. The horns were annoying. Best Johnny Mac show IMHO was the Trio in 91/92 I believe it was.

  • check out Lotus Feet and Miles Out from Innerworlds for the opposite ends of the Mclaughlin tonal palette.

    masterpieces.

  • for me the hardest tone Mclaughlin ever used was that synth sound he used in Radioactiviy way back when. but even that had it's moments.

the stuff that blows my mind are his use of FX that transcend the instrument's mortal capacities. Greatest example of this is Miles Out from Innerworlds. No one ever has come within a full light year of reproducing that sound that said, his acoustic playing using the pristine tone of the nylon strings is just as mind blowing.

"What need have I for this"

  • i hate johns tone...love his playing

  • Saw this lineup at the "Troc" in Philly around this time....KILLER!

  • tastes like shite

  • Pretty cool to see Mclaughlin on a les paul.

  • What a great capture - wish I could have seen this live. What an undeniable rush~

  • given that it's the horrible 1980s...

  • Cool vid!! Thanks for uploading it.

    Amazing! :D
