  • goddamn communists

  • These people either have another form of income, or don't rely on their writing job much to live, how else could they afford to strike for 2 months?

  • lol.yall.sum.rotten.ass.people.give.dem.niggas.dey.money.man

  • i tried to spot felicia day, she was there i believe

  • The entertainment industry will defintely just crash if this strike continues. One thing I hate is reruns.

On a flip note, this is what companies such as Viacom and TimeWarner deserve.

  • oh man >_> few of my show has been stopped due to this strike, hopefully everything will get back to normal, and to those people sitting on the top, stop ripping the writers money, give them their fair share...

  • You obviously have no clue. "Hollywood" is what the writers are percieved as. They are striking for a purpose. The fact that everything is too "hollywoodized"

They should get paid what they deserve. Other people take their credit for thier hard work. They should get the gratification for their input in these situations. If you had a brain you'd understand why this is happening.

  • These people write the scripts, the give wording to the trash. Anyways I dont watch tv anyways so really do not care if they strick for the next 100 years. Go write a book if they want credit.

  • The point is that these people work hard, and it IS hard to get a script made, and they deserve to get paid for it.

  • no ones arguing that they aren't getting the credit they deserve, were just saying who cares about hollywood anymore?? Entertainment in hollywood sucks now. I just heard that Golden Globes arent coming. So we don't hear a bunch of duesch bag stars act like their talent is somehow greater then any other talent under then sun and we should be glamorizing them, cause you know how to read a script? Try writing one!!

  • omg that fckin american goverment they own billions it aint much givin ppl their wages

  • They should all be fired and blacklisted from LA and NY writing jobs.

  • So far I have watched about 2 minutes of this and I didn't watch these shows anyway. SO thank you.

  • then why are you concearned? You posted a reply so obviously you were interested. I see...you just wanted to show how ignorant you were. Well allright then. You're entitled to your biased opinions:)

  • Fuck hollywood, Fuck America !

  • Go japan, Go Dragons

  • This is proof positive that much talent is directed to satiate vanity and self interest. If what they were creating was of of actual benefit, such a strike would have been avoided by virtue of their own self respect, witnessed in their own development. This is my professional opinion as a member of Canadian Actors Equity; I apply the same belief to my own practice, and that of my colleagues. If that fellow who spoke of empowerment understood the words he used, he'd probably change professions.

  • So YOU start writing scrips

  • there is PLENTY of money to go around.

in fact....i should be getting something for watching their crap.

  • GOOD 'cause I'm sick of paying for your Welfare

  • im behind them.

listen to the part where they are getting, what, 3 percent?

or whatever that figure was that he quoted.

i dont own a tv but shit, people want creativity and to pay nothing, not cool. rock on guys!!

  • corporations don't have nearly enough checks and balances...

  • I don't care if these people write trash for TV shows with no substance... If someone is making money out of it then they have to get paid. I don't watch these TV shows nor do I care for it. I read books and browse the net, I find it more entertaining.

  • I don't care if these people write trash for TV shows with no substance... If someone is making money out of it then they have to get paid. I don't watch these TV shows nor do I care for it. I read books and browse the net, I find it more entertaining.

  • these writers get paid ridiculous amounts of money. They feel a part of the labor movement? PLEASE! yeah okay, they are the substance behind the show, but the shows really arent that good (in my opinion). The true writers ar those who write books and publish for content, not for money.

it just really disgusts me that they identify with the labor movement when they are anything but.

  • While I definately agree there should be a balance in work, there should be a balance in pay. Writers deserve payment for services rendered based upon their talent etc...

What these celebrities and various support staff, writers, photographers, camera men seem to forget is that there are a million very talented people waiting in line to do their job if they are not willing. they are all lucky if you ask me.

  • damn, i can't watch desperate housewives because of this crap.

  • it takes A HELL OF A LOT MORE talent to think up a funny original joke, then it does to stand in front of the camera and say it. yet actors get millions including fame and endorsements and writers get shit. this just shows its the writers who control TV. all the actors could strike, adn get replaced by people off the street and the funny jokes would still be making us all laugh

  • You should be jailed for all those putrid sitcoms.

  • did you ever think that we are scared of these people..they threaten us with their powers, like we can't exist without them, it's pure blackmail..

  • powers? anyway... without writers there would be no substance to anything in the media. and how are they blackmailing us if we don't actually need them. you're just contradicting yourself.

  • get real society would do just find with out them, stay on strike forever

  • ya and only have reruns to watch for the rest of our lives..THAT SOUNDS FUN

  • It's hard to believe some of the responses I've read. No, the guild is not going to donate money to World Hunger or the Wildfires in California. That's not their job. If you're so concerned about it, you can go ahead and donate. The main point is that they are standing up for themselves, and for future generations. If you think that we don't need writers, then I am guessing you don't need the internet or television or radio or newspapers. Writers are needed for all means of entertainment.

  • True but how come the most watched shows on tv are reality shows? Dancing with the stars and american idol too. And i heard...quote "heard" that writers make a decent amount of money already and they just want more. Its like doctors going on strike cause they want more money.

  • first baseball...then the garbagemen here in the bay area... now writers... whats next...

  • Broadway stage hands. lol. Although they are back to work. They actually do what you are supposed to during a strike. NEGOTIATE! instead the writer's just stand on the corner and drag it out, but what do they care? Most of them are still getting paid anyways. How do I get that job? lol

  • their still getting paid!?!?!?!... wow... im with you how do i get that job.

  • did you ever think that we are scared of these people..they threaten us with their powers, like we can't exist without them, it's pure blackmail..

  • give their jobs to indians and illegal immigrants

  • Why blame the writers for this? Blame warner bros and walt disney

  • This strike makes me sick. There are impoverished people all over the world who are suffering and are in worse situations than the actors'&writers' guild of america. Try working at a fast food joint and see how the employees feel or better yet join the military or become a politician. There are more important things in the world to worry about, like IRAQ.If the strikers were trying to help make the world abetter place then they would have my respect or even my support.

  • youre a dumbshit. they dont get any money from internet "advertisements" and shit and the writers get nothing from it. lets say you wrote a book, and somebody takes it and sells it and doesnt give you a cent from it cause they call it an "advertisement." cause thats whats happening you asshole cunt. they want what they DESERVE!!!!!!

  • Ok fair enough but wheres the negotiating???

  • AMEN SISTA (BROTHA??) sorry I can't tell from your name. but I agree completey

  • and that was to Kaatz not noiseycricket. noisy cricket needs some prozac, or the stick removed from his/her butt.

  • so whats the strike about?more money?

  • you did not watch it.

  • fairness

  • OK I supported the writers when they started the strike, but not anymore. Do you know how many people aren't getting paychecks and able to feed their families because they can't work? I'm talking about people like the grips, the sound editors, ANYBODY LIKE THAT! I mean these people are making more money than 90% of the rest of the industry (again ignoring actors and producers). I'm sick of this. Just suck it up and go back to work

  • thats just the thing though. they need money for THEIR families and such. They deserve the money they want from it. they wrote the fuckin stuff, they should get paid more. They are hoping that by striking, people will join their strike in anger toward the studio execs to get what they deserve.

  • oh come on. Writers get paid a lot more than most other jobs. yes I know they write the stuff, but you can't put on a show without cameramen, or lighting guys. They make a LOT less than writers and now they are out of work and not getting paid.

  • True. This stike effects alot more than the viewers and the writers...

  • I think this is ridiculous. Writers are not that great. Most of the stuff on TV is crap. Most people are not in a union.

  • I really like how the reporter in the video is asking them questions and having them report on the conditions of the strike. It's good to know them a bit more and what they are fighting for. This is not just about money, but rather being able to receive some kind of additional reward for their hard work. After all, they are an integral part in creating the popularity behind the production.

  • Every time you say a movie quote, you're quoting a writer. You're quoting a person who has worked their entire life, dedicated like a gymnast who wants to make it to the Olympics. Writers work very hard, and are much more clever than any of you and your posts. That's why they get paid to write for you, to create the stories for daily dreams and fantasies. Without the writers, our society would be as limp as jelly, and W. Bush would have to improvise all the time. Imagine that.

  • Umm... Yes, every time you quote a movie you're quoting a writer who got PAID to write a screenplay. Of course, how would you quote that line without a boom op to record it? Or a sound dept to mix the soundtrack? Or a cinematographer to light the scene? Writers get paid, already, for what they are worth. This is an issue primarly about internet royalties, and is mostly about staff television writers wanting paychecks for the rest of their lives for horrible television writing.

  • Boy. Your dumb ass would make a model judge. The writers have no right to make monetary gain for THEIR PROPERTY...because you say it's "horrible"? I guess certain people aren't due a fair trial because you don't like their style, huh? It amazes me this WGA strike is even a debated issue. If you understood it's about producers upholding a legality agreed upon by both parties, you'd have NOTHING to say!

  • You clearly have very little idea what you're talking about.

  • Miss Klein, in defense I actually know a very lot about what I'm talking..about. Truth is, most people are so stuck in their own opinions about what "writing" is (IE- 'horrible television writing', to quote you) that taking that essential step back to recognize how much influence writers have in modern America, well it's more important than simply droning over the logistics of the current strike situation.

  • because this strike is representative of a much less timely problem, one that has affected artists, writers and social movers and shakers since as far back as societies go. And the rest of us sit about and bitch about artists, then we steal from them. Where do you think this language you're using even came from? did you write it? Additionally, boom mic operators need strong arms, not strong brains.

  • You're an idiot. Never have children or operate motor vehicles. In this glorious nation, you have just as much right to conjur up and own an intellectual property. They're fighting so they and YOU if you had the fucking brain, would be issued the money due for property usage. These writers are being bent over and screwed. What producers are doing on the web with THEIR material is illegal and they shouldn't work under such conditions. No one should.

  • get real society would do just find with out them, stay on strike forever

  • So many people just don't get it and never would unless they had a good friend who was a writer or they were writers. They are being screwed out of what should be theirs per terms of their Guild agreement. They're fighting for a worthy cause, one that will effect future generations working in the entertainment industry. How can anyone take the side of heartless, money grubbing producers over them? I hope this is resolved as soon as possible.

  • What's a guy who works for a television network doing criticizing 'large corporate conglomerates'? If you don't like/support them, don't help them make millions of dollars man...

  • sometimes you work within the system you have. Watch "The Corporation" to see how corporations are prevalent in our lives. They were even given the same rights as people. Anyway, I noticed so much "blame the victim" mentality on this board, yet little criticism of the conglomerates that control so much of our lives.

  • these assholes call themselves writers? hacks, to a man. fuck 'em. poisoners of the well, killers, every last one. fuck 'em.

  • Totally agree - only a handful of watchable shows have been put out in the last 20 years. Probably a bunch of reality tv show writers.

  • a very, very small handful. give me the classics or give me death.

  • I just hope that this whole thing gets sorted out soon.... some good shows are suffering because of it.. heroes is my favorite show and its season is being cut short and the episodes havent been that great

  • Fight the Power! I guarantee that if it was up to the Corporate world Unions would be nonexistent and individuals would be at the whim of the corporate trade winds.

  • Hope they figure this all out soon because I absolutely hate reality show crap! I respect the writers big time and they have a hard job, if this is true and if they don't get paid much then they better start soon.

  • I would venture to guess that 99% of Americans couldn't care less whether or not writers ever work again. They put out the most limp-wristed crap there is.

  • Let them go back to work i am on here to theshrever thank's pay them all of there money there worth it.

  • soory forv typing error i meet to say tv

  • who cares who needs hollywood, we can make our own movies, tec programs we new zealand. plus the strike will help web, plus international film makers. Hollywood strike all year. we do not care

  • hollywood makes me sick.....it's your fault.

  • surely there's someone more interesting on the line to talk to

  • The writers create the story that you sit down to watch and enjoy. It all starts with the writers. Without the writers, Hollywood is sh*t. Why is this such a hard concept to grasp? The writers should be paid what they're worth! Who gives a rat's ass about the Hollywood suits and execs, who, ironically, make a lion's share of the money earned on each piece of media. Keep up the good fight, writers! You've got my full support!!

  • hollywood doesn't become horrible without writers. it would be horrible nonetheless

  • yeah, the response of people here is kind of confusing. Sure, some strikes are frivolous, but these people have been given the short end of the stick by the big media corporations, getting no commission for internet revenues and barely anything for DVDs. The corporations refuse to give them any commissions on these "new media," even though these people write all the shows that get shown.

  • disgusting....you strike right after California loses billions due to the wild fires and then everyone else is left unemployed during the holiday season. How do you sleep at night?

  • There goes your favorite shows and movies. You are going to have to write your own shows to watch now.

  • go back to work or you should be fired ala Reagan.Lazy Bastards

  • i hope they win so i can get back to work...Everyone is suffering

  • I'm kind of confused here. Some of you seem to be suggesting that nobody should ever strike, because everyone is intrinsically important to the functioning of society. If this is the case, all the more reason to strike! Those who receive the least amount in "prizes" in this world deserve as much as everyone else.

  • The Corporate Execs just want to give us affordable good quality entertainment...but these god damn writers are ruining their plans. I know the heads of the corporations would take pay cuts in order to fulfill their public duty of providing good shows, but why should they? Huge media companies should just outsource the writers jobs to China in order to teach these commy writers a thing or two. I'd ve willing to learn Chinese if it meant that movies ticket prices don't go up.

  • "I'm not into social issues, I'm an entertainer." What a moron!

  • So will the cameramen get a percentage on future sales ? The set electrician ? The caterers ? Production would grind to a halt just as quickly if those people went on strike, but they seem to grasp that they get paid to do a job, then they move on.

  • Pure 100% bullshit at the end with the quotes from the executives with media companies.

  • So... writers should get nothing?

  • Yea, of course, I totally agree with you there... I mean, according to your logic, why should authors get paid to write books?... It's not even their ink and paper being used to make the books, all they did was think of the entire storyline and plot etc..

  • Well that is THEIR work. the people who write for most shows are not the originator of the idea they are hired hands hired only to finish a job, they get their money from it and thats fair. Does the family expect to get money in 70years after the "writer" has died? Idiot.

  • Even if you are the "originator" of the idea of a series, doesn't make you the originator of each episode. Lets use actual shows for examples, CSI, Jerry Bruckheimer... do you really think he came up with every single concept, plot, theme and crime in each show? or a team told to make CSI interesting? The fact is, the writers are the one creating the "love" for the characters, not the actors and they should be the ones getting paid for it.

  • the writers basically make the show. There would be no episodes with no writers... idiot.

  • Cool, no more shitty movies for a while!

  • Actually that IS a plus. Isn't it?

  • COUGH UP THE MONEY CORPORATE HEADS, YOUR BEST DAYS ARE BEHIND YOU, in my boox, either you produce, or you are eliminated

    Gordon Gexxo

  • So, THESE are the faces behind the warped minds of the crap on T.V. today?

  • After 19 years as a writer of executive speeches and media news releases for IBM, I was in a group of writers laid off and replaced by younger, lower paid people.

When push comes to shove, companies see little to no true value in employees with artistic skills. The writer's have every right to strike. Bravo.

  • But, do you blame the company or the highly paid actors/hosts getting all the cash. Thank you, Tom Cruise, Ellen, Jay, Conan, David L., Grey's Anad's cast, Callista Flockhart, and all others getting highly paid to put on a show that they did not create!! BRavo!!

  • Corporate America sux

    sux creativity

    sux ingeneuity

    sux spirit

Long live creative, independent producers everywhere!!

  • As a viewer, all I can say is that I miss good programming.

People go on strikes to bring back fairness in the working place while the production of things cease.

But when it's been for more than 3 weeks, the profits will go down drastically.

When there's nothing on, FOX brings out the worst in TV with things which normally break FCC guidelines.

When they go back to work, we'll probably give them half the time they spent outside to regain their credibility before we restart watching TV.

  • Organized labor should be treated like any other monopoly. If you don't get that, you should have paid attention in economics class.

  • Thank you!!! This true!!

  • How is organized labor a monopoly? Organized labor doesn't prevent economic competition. It's high-level management that makes policy to prevent competition, not workers.

  • Organized labor is DEMOCRACY in the workplace

  • this marks the rise of non-formulaic independent film!!

  • Of course it doesn't matter a whit to them that their fellow crafts - editors, cameramen, stage hands - are getting laid off right and left while these greedheads hold out for even MORE money!

  • THese guys are losers!

  • I am the "k" god and I'm going to pull the plug on the AntiMatter people. La la la, la la la,..Hurry run to your lying news papers to stop it...PS the writers are anti matter slaves who don't get paid anything

  • 5:18, proves that this is crap! He claims that they're not doing this for themselves! I'm all for them getting more money but they should just come up front and say it instead of lying

  • GO WRITERS ....GET YOURS .....i miss the shows but they deserv the money ...they create the suff !

  • I have traveled past a few of the YouTube videos linked to the strikers. It is amazing why those who bother to comment do not get it. It is not the strike that will go away or writers, it is going to be viewers by attrition. People will become bored with their own thoughts exclusively, until they see / agree that creativity is a commodity. Hope those commenting below feel as entertained by minimal video blurbs.

  • I'm going to film school to be a screenwriter, but maybe I should switch to basketweaving.

  • I would not mind paying an extra 1 percent on tv show dvds to help pay for the writers.

  • I think that it is great that the writers went on strike. An author writes a novel and they get their share of the royalties. A singer writes or puts out a song, they get their share of the royalties. Writers for shows deserve the same benefits that their contemporaries are getting. They are the ones that are coming up with the ideas for shows that have millions of Americans hooked each week. They have every right to go out and fight for the money that they deserve.

  • They get plenty of money - they just want even more money while the rest of the "creatives" get laid off.

  • I just tried to give this a thumbs-up and the thumbs-down lit up, I tried to reverse it--just to LYK I meant to give it an UP! :(

  • if anyone tries to read my message just so you know its in reverse order. and also so you know I have nothing against the writers, I want people to understand however that they are not the ultimate underdogs and many are treated allready in a way that I feel is too fair to strike

  • Grips get paid by the hour, thats it and they can't work form the comfort of their home on a typewriter. Don't make 500,000+ dollars a year as much of the writers do. But they will be out of jobs for Christmas as the writers choose to strike.

  • Scripts are revised and rewritten in production by producers, networks, directors, and then in post by editors Without these people and the grips, gaffers, PAs working the sets who lost their jobs over this, a writer's work is not a "show" or a "movie" it is just a script. Writers get paid for online downloads, writers on sitcoms get paid thousands every time a show reruns and they get paid for their original work.

  • I'm just going to say I know alot of people who are out of work over the writers striking who are "Below the line" who will not ever see the benefits these writers are after. Writers say that "they are the show," but every person on a set makes a show happen...

  • tonysiciliano - I have to say I agree. Many people want to voice this side of the coin but don't. There are people who are out of work like you say because of this, and will not recieve the money writers recieve.

  • come over we need you in venezuela for demostretions, do not change your red skirt is okey, revolution is evolution hahahahahhaha bring your guns hahaahahaha not okey serius goood luck

    because i love anacondas

  • *takes*

  • God Save the Writers!! If 'they' could, they would hire cheap bastards to do this j o b too, however, it take mofo talent to do their job! Everyday the big shots hold back, more come here to watch...give 'em what they want!!! A gd dvd sells for nearly 30 bux and the blessed writers get a bloody cent! Damn!!

Unfair, anyway u look @ it!

  • christ the country is in crisis and we have a writers strike. A writers strike... the writers in hollywood aren't about to lose their homes. We are. yet we dont strike.

  • then you should!

  • damn straight!

  • What a great opportunity for leftists to show how much they care about world hunger. Donate 100% of your raise to feed the children of the world. NOT! Hollywood leftists are so full of $&!* I can smell it through youtube.

  • take your divisive tomfoolery elsewhere you half wit

  • Funny how leftists get conservative when it's their wallets. Why don't you lying bastards say that you will donate 100% of your negotiated raise to feed poor African children?

  • because they're africans... duuuh

  • Extras should Be in a Union.

  • I mean not just SAG extras All Extras.

  • all the job move to other country like china mexico but all mexican still invasion ripp of us just make wealthy big guy ,thats happen since billary clinton in the office

  • my favorite country is "china mexico"

  • best food in the world

  • Get back to work, you greedy slackers! I want some new episodes of 24!

  • nobody wants new episodes of 24, nobody

  • Dennis in the black cap/red shirt is the man!

    Ron Paul 2008

  • an assistant union...lol

  • does anyone know what a writer earn monthly at least approx.

i think they get paid well

  • writer's get paid very little. there is usually no regular rate of money. sometimes they will get money when they print something, but not very much.

  • i need a number i cant image anything maybe they get little paid compared to the actors but this is still very much. i heard they got with the helicopters to the strike

  • You're rite, i can't seem to empathise without some figures, although I'm all for social revolution.

  • Lets all get rid of TV and be done with it, its made many stupid generations of people. TV is the evil that chooses you, the internet is the evil that you choose.. and you know what they say about the evil you know.

  • I would not take off all the blame from the people that CHOOSE to watch it.

  • fuck u

  • I think that eventually if the strike keeps up, the writers will win. They are just putting up a show of force out of fear. KEEP IT UP!!!

  • Well if I were a producer then I guess I'd start thinking about getting my episodes done in England, India, or Australia? It's a global economy. lol, I liked the part about the assistants needing to unionize. They are the least paid of all of them on the picket line.

  • Thanks for this perspective RealNews! I have been waiting for someone to show that this can be about more than just the writers.

  • I've noticed that RealNews have been hitting it right on the nail with so many great reports lately.

  • Took them long enough. But anyway, yeah. This was a great report.

  • Agree

  • If this continues until the Spring of 2008, we can kiss The Colbert Report and The Daily Show goodbye and be bored to tears, not watching anything good which FOX capitalizes on TV strikes with crappy and unwanted reality shows which is polluting the airwaves.

The Internet is the replacement of TV which you can download shows on torrents and movies as well.

All we want is the writers back to work so that FOX doesn't keep polluting our airwaves which most TV viewers are complaining about.

  • What's wrong with sounding revolutionary? That is exactly what is needed.
