Hey chris, my 1961 40hp motor is poping or doing very little backfire coming out of the exhaust pipes, What could be causing this? and how do i resovle this problem?
On some tests, you test the car cold, and first test is dry, second test on the same plug is after you've squirted some oil in. I did by 58 36hp and dry got 90, with oil it raised to 110-120. Would this suggest the rings are on their way out. It does blow a bit of blue smoke when you start it up.
@OMMPgrower if you are below 90 in any cylinder, you will have to pull the motor and at least inspect the valves at first, then go onto the rings, that then entails taking the head apart.

@vwbugsrule check timing, plugs, wires, carb

@brighteyefilms ok, i did all that, except for the carb, so i shall get a new kit and redo it.

aren't you supposed to conduct compression tests at WOT? (wide open throttle)

@super71beetle nope
brighteyefilms 7 months ago
@super71beetle throttle has nothing to do with compression

its agood idea to adjust ur valves before doing a compression test

Chris,
I remember from all the VWs I had in the 70s that spark plug holes threads were stripped and had inserts in at least one hole. Have you seen that ?

Nice, short and sweet, however just like to add that you are also to give the motor full throttle when you do the test.
