  • Sounds like the opening to the shining

  • for all you marching band people......sound familiar????.....(like maybe Choker)

  • for the curious like me... the name of that painting is : Last Judgement di Hans Memling.

  • So I went and saw 4th Pirates of the Caribbean and I felt really, really nerdy because at one point when the main theme was playing, Dies Irae was interspersed between it, and I felt an extreme need to point it out (I was the only one to notice). Unfortunately, I totally blanked on the fact that it is a Gregorian Chant and Berlioz kind of made of a parody of it in the 5th Movement of Symphony Fantastique, so I immediately connected it to the latter. But still, music nerds for the win!

  • Aha! This was in On Stranger Tides (fourth Pirates of the Caribbean) in the last few scenes! (I won't say which scene for fear of giving too much away...)

  • I feel it's inappropriate to say this, but this song mindfucks me everytime

  • Which recording is this? Keen to get hold of the full thing.

  • einfach fantastisch !!! hör ich mir immer an beim kacken !

  • Wonderful dies irae, considering this isn't a requiem mass...

  • we used part of this in our marching band show last year. :D our composer combined this with mozart and verdi's dies irae and featured bits and pieces of each of them in our second movement! it was amazing. :D i play march flute so i got to play the triplets (at least they were made triplets for us) and it was a lot of fun to learn. :D i've been intrigued by the symphonie fantastique ever since.

  • litz aussi a repris le Dies Irae, connaissez-vous d'autres compositeurs qui s'en soient également inspirés?

  • look up just blaze 2nd coming

  • This theme is part of Hector Berlioz's 5th movement - entitled a "Witches' Sabbath", NOT "Day of Wrath." This does not contain the entire piece which is approx 10 minutes long. Part of the song was also featured in Julia Roberts', "Sleeping with the Enemy."

  • @babsinva Dies Irae is a just a well known theme (melody) in general. It was used in part of the Witches's Sabbath, and this is that particular part. You should just be quiet instead of being a bitch.

  • my favourite part of symphonie fantastique. i can't describe the feelings i get when i'm listening to it.... amazing

  • Do I actually hear ophicleides?

    A beautiful recording!

  • HERES JOHNNY

  • avec en plus un cours de solège en appui en particulier le cours de Marielle ..du conservatoire du mans . c'est tout un plaisir de découvrir cette séquence

  • Oh yes! That's how I knew about it!

  • this is the best interpretation I've heard of this part of the symphonie, who's playing?

  • What kind of bells were being used? I've been researching pretty hard on where these kind of low pitched bells exist for orchestra.

  • @TechnoBIan Tubular Bells...

  • So great! Which orchestre is it? And which recording? I have to buy it ;-)

  • Probably one of my favorite reconstructed pieces of the "Dies Irae".

  • Gosh, whenever i hear this, i get creeped out, because it reminds me of a game (ZAMN) that scared me shitless as a kid. lol

    great music though.

  • I find this song better that in the game :D

  • A film Sleeping with the enemy...same song.

  • Thank you Wendy Carlos for bringing this amazing piece back into the limelight!!

  • Everytime I hear this part, I get chills down my back. Especially when I hear it live.

  • I heard a version of it live a long time ago and it was wonderful. I doesn't compare to hearing it on youtube.

  • Let me clarify - It sounds better live than it does on youtube

  • Juelz Santana sampled this, 0:36-1:09 in his song! the Second Coming.....but this is more epic !

  • I'm curious what the painting is that you've used here as a visual. Thanks for posting this!

  • the painting is called "The Day of Judgment", and I thought that was quite appropriate for a song with the name meaning "Judgment Day".

  • I think "Dies Irae" means "Day of Wrath" no? :-P

  • @shenry1973 yeah, if i remember correctly, that painting is by a guy named Memling from the Netherlands. but the painting i vaguely remember hearing is currently in Poland

  • I love this piece, and this part is absolutely epic.

  • The music for The Shining is based on this piece.

  • it's not based on this particular piece but on the original Gregorian requiem
