unfortunately the leader's musicality feel is definetely different from mine. slowing everything in the dynamic music like pantera mambo doesn't make much sense. tempo is still important, and ignoring the tempo is not necessary to point the accents in music, unless the leader just can't stand the tempo and point the accents in the same time...
This is a masterful dance interpretation of an otherwise bland Salsa composition. It gives me a new dimention to play with. Great dance ideas. I don' think I can pull it off with myopic New York on 2 dancers who usually cannot dance with partners from another dance school.
Musicality doesn't have to be count specific...You just hit the music according to instrument. You feel musicality when you dance you can't totally predict it on a count basic, music follows patterns terms like hills, valleys etc. only a musician could really predict it like clockwork. Edie is a great dancer by the way and did an awesome job considering it was improve and totally random.
God. Eddie's a horrible follow. Half the time her arms have horrible tension and they look like they are dangling on the turns. A guy would have to drag her through a song.
I don't see anythg wrong w switchg the ftwk esp during stylistic elements provided the LE doesn't throw off the FO or screw up her own footwork. This is really hard to do, especially during the horn parts because the FO must be able to almost instantly react to whether it's going to be a usual salsa lead or whether it's going to be a free form styling, AND when to instantly switch back to salsa again. Tricky, but can be done w good lead, follow, chemistry AND knowledge of the song being played.
Of course, there is a HUGE difference between someone being on the 'wrong' foot but aware at all times of the correct beat, playing with it, siwtching, compensating, etc, and someone who is a total screw up and really IS off beat.
To pull off somethg like this socially requires the FO, as Edie states, to be able to understand the LE's flow as well. You do have to pick the right FO to do it with.
You can play with the nuances in the rhythms of the piece that you are dancing to but the trick is to always come back to the timing you have chosen to dance on and show some sense of command and groove in that timing. In this clip this guy is all over the place. Shows poor concept of time. Unfortunately this is what is out there lately in socials and dances. Problem is that people do not know better because self proclaimed dance instructors keep taking the dance further away from its origin.
To say I'm "wrong," then now you must at least agree that the audio is correctly synchronized -- which it is. Plus, I thought the point of musicality is that you can change things up to fit the music. So, I don't think that makes me "wrong" just because Alex changed his timing for 13 seconds (out of a 5-minute video) to fit the sounds of the horns.
In my opinion, regardless of what you think about his style, Alex has very good control over his timing.

La 33, song name "La Pantera Mambo".
I think they are a columbian group.
I say the same as SuawekL, he is off beat at times AND song is out of synchro...

Wut is he dancing on? I'm confused...
daroc77 4 years ago
Yep, either he is off the beat or the sound is desynchronized with video.
SuawekL 4 years ago
His footwork is very unorthodox (which may make it confusing), but Alex is consistently leading Edie based on "On 1" timing/structure.
Big10 3 years ago
You are wrong, check the fragment about 1:21, he changes from on1 to on2, then he comes back to on1 again at 1:34.
