She makes me think I may not hate Rossini but only the horrid singers who sing it badly. Ms Garanca is such a good singer she makes the runs exciting and beautiful!!!
She looks so different than in other videos I've seen of her on youtube. What did she do to her face?? Is it just me? I think maybe it's her nose. Or maybe her face is just thinner. Either way, she looks and sounds beautiful. Can anyone tell me when was this recorded?
I add that she is a Mezzo Soprano.... or probly a Dramatic Soprano (Soprano Drammatico)..... this Aria is for Liric Soprano or even a Light Liric Soprano..... very good imho :)
@Vegetth87 Well, Rossini wrote this aria for a mezzo. See the score. Now many lyric and leggero soprano have sung it and adorned it with lots of coloratura. But the author's idea was to create a wily, crafty Rossina, not an ingenue.
@Whistlejocket You wrote "The mic is 5 feet in front of her". I just found out! It's a miracle of electronic communication. EVERY video you see and hear on You Tube involved a microphone. Were you thinking that the physical audience out in front of her were hearing mic'd sound? If so... why did you think that?
@cmcorn90 you must have not seen an opera performed live. Especially sung by someone of her caliber, these arias can fill up an entire auditorium without using a microphone.
WOW, WOW, WOW. I was very sad when we lost Maria Callas (once in a lifetime voice) but now I thank God because I found your videos and I adore them, you have a pure, beautiful, incredible voice. Thank you for sharing your WOW voice with us.
I do like Elina Garanca, for instance love her as Carmen, but not my favorite for this aria. It's not bad but I like Joyce Di Donato better and Teresa Berganza was the ULTIMATE Rosina in my opinion. Unfortunately the elegant phrasing, agility, and impeccable legato of Bel Canto has very nearly disappeared.
What a singer. I'm only new to opera but the way she incorporates those trills and rolled Rs into her singing is just so -- wonderfully teasing and petulant and interesting. She brings life and direction to a standing aria, which is pretty damn wonderful.
I find it mind-boggling that ANYONE could dislike this woman. If she were JUST drop-dead gorgeous, that would, otherwise, be sufficient to guarantee her celebrity status. But, then, SHE OPENS HER MOUTH. Rarely have I heard someone with the diaphragm this woman has; plus, she doesn't just sing a song---she ATTACKS it. By the way, FYI, meprew2: a female conductor is a "Maestra."
Absolutely Amazing! Sad to see so many haters... maybe they're just mad they can't do it- they can't open their mouths and sound like that, so they open their mouths only to spit out obscene mementos of their own jealousy. Please spare us the uneducated banter, and get a life doing something you are talented at: taking people's orders. Brava Ms. Garanca!!!!

@meprew2 Have you ever heard of Jane Glover? She is a wonderful female conductor. I've had the pleasure of sitting right next to her at the Chicago opera conducting Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio. It was amazing. She also wrote a great book called "Mozart's Women." Check her out! I admire her very much. :)
Thanks Techtrom for giving us the oportunity to hear such magnificent singer. And thanks to you Claudia for ending it to me! I t is on its way to a friend who I know will love this as much as I do.
She is perfect..it´s all i can say about her!!!...voice, vocal technic, stage presence, style, elegance, music knoledgement, .....!!! I would like to enjoy her performances in the theatre or concert halls, apart from here in youtube!!! It must be amazing!!!!
Too heavy!!! Everyone who wants to applod her, yes, she is better compare to Netrebko; but this is Rossini, and this is Belcanto. You can not sing it so heavy. Listen to Anna Moffo, only Moffo did it perfect as Rossini wrote it to the score.
@BelCantoV But Moffo was a soprano. Rossini transposed the music for a soprano to sing the role of Rosina; so naturally, Moffo's voice is lighter. So to say that Garanca is not singing according to the score would seem like a misleading statement.
I enjoyed this remarkable singer for the first time in the Met performance of Carmen, to me she is the most authentic and convincing Carmen I have ever seen.
@seattleladt I agree with you. I saw the Met production in a cinema in Hong Kong today. It brought tears in my eyes. A very moving interpretation of the darkness of Carmen, and her courage in the dying scene. She has brought Carmen into another dimension. Besides, she is really beautiful.h
She knows that the difference between this masterwork and other common pieces of that time, resides hidden in the mazes of harmonies, phrases, rhythms, proportions, counterpoints that Rossini wrote. She goes deep in this labyrinth of illusion called music and finds the Ariadne's thread necessary to reconstruct the image of a Rosina that stands out in a prodigious portrait.
So the audience, as Alban Berg said for Wozzeck, doesn't need to know this hidden and complex plot that Gioacchino Rossini knew how to elaborate, and Elina knows how to extricate. The public is now concentrated only on the human subtlety of this funny and tender woman called Rosina. For me, this is the magic of art and Elina Garanca is one of the greates and most refined singers ever.
A younger Elina. When was this? Younger or older, she's stunning. The orchestra is very good no doubt thanks to the interesting conductress. Who is she? Too bad there was little focus on her.

In my opinion Garanca sings very well bell canto. But her voice is not for bell canto... I prefer DiDonato. I love Garanca, but I love her in Carmen not in Il Barbiere! Her voice was not made to sing bell canto.
My fav part :50 is absolutely stunning! her voice is very radient but I wish she wouldn't sing things that make her uncomfortable. She will be retiring Rossini soon for the sake of us all.
Here is my problem with Garanca. She has a great mezzo voice with no doubt but she's just so stoic sometimes. She doesn't convey emotion in her singing or if she does, she obviously doesn't do it right. This sweet, lovely aria sounds flat like cardboard in this rendition. She doesn't really interpret music.
I really have to diagree. While I too do not love her singing 'una voce poco fa' I saw her play Carmen in London last night and she was absolutely sensational, in both her singing and acting. I'd highly recommend going to see her in this role. Magical!
I still wonder how poor the knowledge of history and geography of many people is.
I'll be glad to improve yours, Tonyhan. So- Elina is a Latvian. Latvia is a country located in Nothern Europe. Latvians are not Slavic (Russian, Polish,Ukrianian, Czech, Bulgarian etc. are Slavic), nor are Latvians Germanic or whatever. Latvians are Baltic. And actually we like to think we are kindred nations with Scandinavians, at least geographically, so it is true about a Nordic temper.
Thank you for the details on the Latvians. I had not known their relationship to other Europeans. May I assume that Elina is a perfect example of a Latvian? She seems perfect regardless I suppose.. I love how she presents herself and song. I wish I could afford the trip to the Met in January to be there for Carmen.
@NZdodobird I don't know where you are but are you unable to get to any of the cinemas showing the production live in HD ? I shall be there on Saturday - though in France ! A lot cheaper than having to go to NY for it and you get so much more than the theatre audience. It's worth looking for a venue near to you.
wow! one month ago i commented that i didnt like this and that i wud give just 1* because she skipped the best coloratura part but....to heck! her voice is so gorgeous! almost as gorgeous as her face! lolololol

Magical!

Could be her calm Nordic temper, so , sorry, no cure for that. 8D
SwineNahNah 2 years ago
@SwineNahNah Isn't she Slavic? Anyway I understand what you mean by that.
tonyhan0903 2 years ago
I still wonder how poor the knowledge of history and geography of many people is.
I'll be glad to improve yours, Tonyhan. So- Elina is a Latvian. Latvia is a country located in Nothern Europe. Latvians are not Slavic (Russian, Polish,Ukrianian, Czech, Bulgarian etc. are Slavic), nor are Latvians Germanic or whatever. Latvians are Baltic. And actually we like to think we are kindred nations with Scandinavians, at least geographically, so it is true about a Nordic temper.
Have a nice day! :)

@sycamoretree111 I didn't know that. Thanks.

@sycamoretree111

@suzypuss
Hey, thanks for the idea. My sister got such tickets to see an event at the MET here in Portland and I hadn't thought about that myself.
Thank you.

Some nations do not learn international geography, which is a pity. I think we were lucky to learn:D

the best mezzo for me is olga borodina and the GREAT CHRISTA LUDWIG, the best contralto for me is Kathleen ferrier...not elina
