From what I can see, he's running a Digi003 for his audio interface into ProTools on that laptop, and the midi keyboard is an Axiom Pro 49. ;) That digi003 looks yummy, I'm still running a digi002 rack unit, and it's pretty incredible, and apparently John Mayer is aware of digi's kickass preamps too :D

oh yeah, what it's for, the Digi003, is both a control surface (transport and mixer) and is a series of virtually transparent preamps and a ton of 1/4" line inputs/outputs. The routing potential is pretty much infinite. The AxiomPro, is an all around incredible midi controller for software instruments/plugins. It can also be used for automation of eq's, gates, etc. But the digi003 takes care of most of the automation, and I believe has motorized faders.
