  • Raw and unpolished. Even still, everyone is feeling the emotion.

  • That's just typical Chris Spedding, especially when he's playing with Bryan Ferry.

  • Do you think Chris Spedding was wasted? The concept of what he's playing actually isn't bad; I could see it working well with better control of the tone, the distortion and the string bending. The execution feels a little sloppy and lazy... Still a cool performance that I continue watch.

  • SAW THIS LIVE 1977..PREFER STUDIO VERSION..

In Your MindのFerryはほんとにいいです。

  • Yes, I can see why you'd say that. Still, I thought it was ok, not great, but pretty much ok. And it was 1977, after all!

  • I'll make a break with the others and say that Spedding's second solo ... was crap.

  • @ColtraneTaylor Why you say that?

  • @AubergeLeveque Sounds uninspired and sloppy to me.

  • Spedding's style is a lot like Phil's. Wonder how that came to be.

  • Manzanera on rhythm , Spedding on lead..., Wetton on bass, and TGPT on drums !! Priceless!... i wish i was across the pond in the 70s to see ferry/roxy live just once! USA never gave them the respect they deserved...but ART ROCK in general was slow to thrive here.

  • @leonakita playing at the O2 in Feb...

  • i think this is bryan and chris at their best , fantastic !!!!

  • Saw several concerts on this tour in 77. So memorable. Chris Spedding was sensational.

  • Shit singing you having a laugh mate !

  • fantastic BIG BAND sound, yet despite all those instruments we can still hear BF loud and clear. The guitar work is just rocking! Stunning lytics, relentless, pounding, I just love it! Brilliantly performed! Possibly my fave Youtube video. A song to play during an amazing, mindblowing bonk!

  • Hey, listen to other '77 songs: Ferry's a DareDevil in text & structure!

    timeless!

  • "Maybe a too much complicate song, not easy for a crooner" -- but Ferry wrote this song and therefore should be an expert in singing it. OK anyway I take back my previous comments. The singing is shite but the raw emotion of this live performance has really grown on me and I canot stop playing it --- replay, replay, replay! The words are just heartwrenching. Play it when you are in love and understand! The YEARNING of the words "love me madly again" is just thrilling.

  • I love Roxy Music when they're strange...

  • Maybe a too much complicate song, not easy for a crooner: but Bryan Ferry does honestly his job. Not like the strange guitarist,I believe. What Manzanera was doing,in the meanwhile?

  • As some have mentioned, Ferry's singing isn't flawless here & Spedding might have missed a few notes, but that isn't the point. All of this contributes to the "raw-ness" of this version that works well here, I think. The album version seems a bit smoother...just my $.02

  • Disappointed with Ferry's singing here. Heard better karaoke singers half drunk in the local pub. Yet on the album this song sends me into raptures of delight...

  • this guitarist is awesome!

  • My 14th Birthday. Saw this Tour in Melbourne Australia at Festival Hall.

Ferry was Mr "Cool" with those leathers, brilliant.

  • I think Chris Spedding had too much to drink the night before - he is usually SOOO much better than this.

  • effing great song from IN YOUR MIND. ok, but not great live recording of this tuff tuff song... too bad the bryan didnt take the touring band from the high road shows (81-82) out for a spin on his solo work.

  • Is that a flying V ?

  • Yes.

  • Hey thanks...awesome

  • I'm a fan of Ferry, Spedding et al. Have to agree that the solo was meandering into other places...hard to second guess but I was there at a performance in the U.S. and I remember when I heard then do the extended ending expressly for the solos - I remember thinking that it was one of those things that was exactly right to do and Spedding nailed it like he was born for it. And to top it off, remember it's Ferry the Singer who hands half of the song off for the exact right reason.

  • I prefer it to super slick meaningless stuff. I saw a show on this tour and I became a Spedding fan.

  • @blinkie7 Me too! This guy is so good. I've since met him a couple of times.

  • Is this concert available on CD or DVD or even an LP ?

  • Bryan Ferry's In Your Mind & The Bride Stripped Bare are some of the 70s music in my opinion.

  • Happy Birthday to me. Great Drummer that Boy.

  • I've fallen in love with this song!

  • Saw this tour in 77 at the Bottom Line in NYC. A club that seats around 600 people. Talking Heads was the opening act. I was blown away. Spedding is a very underrated guitarist. In Your Mind is my favorite Ferry solo album.

  • A rather lack lustre solo by Spedding here IMHO - his usual feel totally gone, which is strange... probably wondering who to emulate or something... should've just let Phil take it. Anyhow, it's really what the band is doing in that second part that's the real heart of the piece... just beautiful... on the album when the strings rise... just wonderful.

It would seem that the young David Sylvian thought so too!

  • If this is Spedding when he's "lack-lustre" then he's ridiculously talented. Doesn't sound "lack-lustre" to me!

  • The band are so good behind him that he should have just flown into space, but he delivered a void. I love him, he's the first guitarist I ever saw live, (when in Sharks, supporting Roxy at The Rainbow, London, early 70's), followed him ever seen... I think even he would agree this performance is poor. Put it this way, if Ferry was James Brown, our Chris would have lost wages that night... @ 5.20 is the first of many fluffed notes (f'instance) & in general he's relying on almost clichéd lix

  • Ah...well thank God Ferry isn't James Brown. ;-)

I tend to think part of Ferry's genius is that he brought together superior musicians and then created a synergy by drawing the best out of each one. The net result so often was greater than the sum of its parts. I guess anyone can have an "off" day, tho'. Cheers.

  • " Ferry's genius is...he brought together superior musicians & then created a synergy by drawing the best out of each one."

Agreed 100% ~ I notice you're in The U.S.A., Roxy were never that big over there eh? So extra kudos to you for getting into them. B.F's influences are almost entirely American, yet he is quintessentially English, one of the very few who sing 'clean' without a transatlantic drawl like; Jagger, Elton John etc. But then Bryan Ferry isn't really Rock n' Roll is he?

  • "But then Bryan Ferry isn't really Rock n' Roll is he? "

...No, not really. He defies categorization, as innovators usually do. He's crossed genres and invented new ones. I think it has both helped and hindered him in that it has brought his work before a wider audience but has made it difficult for some to decide where he fits for purposes of airplay, especially here in the U.S. We were slow to appreciate his work here. Hopefully this is changing.

  • I'm in the States and was introduced to Roxy in the 80's when they disbanded . IMO the Roxy/Ferry catalog of music is absolutely awesome and to think that most of their work was created during the 70's is mind blowing. They were truly innovators like you stated, and yes, Ferry 's genius is his ability to bring great musicians together and creating synergy. Roxy/Ferry is still getting younger fans from their old material, great music never ages.

  • Hold on a minute, David Sylvian was/is in quite another league!!!! Both as far as vocal range is concerned, and image. They would have made a great match, but that never will be.

  • "... another league" ???

MMMMmmmmm. Not sure how you mean that. Sylvian has really matured as an artist... his new stuff is wonderful. He has collaborated with nearly EVERYBODY (of note) that Ferry/Bowie have worked with, to great effect too.

Anyway, Sylvian represents those of my generation that grew up with T.Rex, Roxy Music & Bowie/Ronson and went on to make decent music themselves... as opposed to the Adam Ants and Boy Georges (bless him though).

  • I meant that I find David Sylvian to be a much better artist and singer! Check out my favourites, loads of Sylvian and Japan.

  • Both among my favourite male voices. Roxy was a big inspiration to Japan, and dozens of bands late seventies, imho. Their voices is are both very smooth, but maybe both seems inspired by Scott Walkers singing . Check out SW.

  • I keep coming back. As beautiful as the album version is, this just blows it out of the water.

  • I saw the "In Your Mind" tour in '77 Detroit...great song!!!

  • Definitely the best track from 'In Your Mind'. Thanks for posting.

  • I loved this song for 33 years

ican not believe it is here to hear

  • During Bryan Ferry's 70's solo period very little is mention about Ann Odell. She in my opinion was the backbone of his musical material from 1977's album " In Your Mind " to his 1978 release and one of my favorites " The Bride Stripped Bare" I would like to see her in the future if Ferry tours again.

  • Must totally agree with your comments re Ann Odell. I'd love to know what she got up to post Ferry. It's New Years Eve 2008 and I've just played "In your Mind" and "The Bride Stripped Bare". What a way to greet 2009!!!! PS I do like his 2002 album "Frantic". Eno does some collaborative work on it as well.

  • Oh God! Spedding!!!

  • Thanks for this. Great song - Gonna admit my age by saying been searching for this song on the tube but it's like hen's teeth. Cheers :)

  • Bryan & Band were right out there in 1977. Sadly to me Ferry got to Mushy for me in the 80's. But i can play this album forever

  • Another beautiful "obscure" Ferry track. I love watching B.F.'s reaction to Chris Spedding's solo. Priceless! Thanks for posting, Sirlong!

  • @aviatrix911 ..yeah , his reaction was "Why the hell are you butchering the hell out of this guitar solo... I knew I should have gone with Manzanera, what the hell was I thinking... you're fired fucker ! "

  • At 2:50 this song turns into pure magic.

  • so true

  • What a voice! It's like his whole career in 1 song.Thank you for posting! Viva Roxy!

  • The interplay between Manxanera and

Spedding is fair enough reason to put

Ferry performing this gem into a certain

hall-of-fame in O-hi-o. Sorry 'bout the DEVO

reference; only thing connecting Ferry to

DEVO is of course Mr. Eno.

  • Chris Spedding on guitar solo, along with Phil Manzanera. John Wetton on bass, The Great Paul Thompson on drums. Anyone know who the woman playing keys and singing background is?

One of his best solo works. Thanks for posting!

  • The woman on keyboard is Ann Odell

  • tokyo japan nhk 1977tour

  • Was this from the 1977 Ferry solo tour?

Where he played the Bottom Line in NY?

  • Thank-you for posting this great version of a great song. One of the best 'obscure' Ferry tracks!

  • Wie wäre es mit Travelling Tune? Liebe Grüsse!
