  • He has braces? How cute lol

  • This guy is a drumming god.

  • PLEASE COME BACK TO DT

  • i think the owl on his shoulder means he is part of Illuminati...

  • @onixtheone Bullshit!!!! You're quiet ridiculous if you think that he is part of that.

  • @immortalsoloist How can You be so sure??

  • @onixtheone If you check some of DT's tracks they are pretty anti that stuff. They don't need such cheap stuff to survive. They are true musicians/artists.

  • yea, marching band!!! I bet he played snare as a freshman xD

  • strange, watched this just before i went to bed, next morning i wake up, and i read that he quits:(

  • I take a little involuntary twitch every time someone says "My-young". It's pronounced "myuhng", nowhere in Korea does anyone have a two-syllable last name.

  • @Slashe50 he is american. LaBrie is probably french and is not pronounced like it is in english

  • Mike has quite the beard :-)

  • Damn, Portnoy in Marching Band? I'd kill to have him on snare in my HS band xD

  • Jim Putalski pushed this band Dream Theatre and honestly, their music stinks

  • @CapnBooBoo You get a great big ol thumbs down for idiotic nay sayyer shit. Pearsonally, I've beat 3 people up for talking shit about my beloved RUSH, capitalized for iconic reasons fer shur. And I'm up to 2 derelicks and pushing 3+ for dissing the RUSH torch carrier, that would be: DREAM THEATER!!! So capboohoo, your stripes are herebye stripped, and now your just a lowely private. Now fuck off and die bitch boy!

  • @driverofsound Try to beat my ass!!!!!! That's not going to happen.. How about Rush is mediocre and DT flat out sucks? I hope you live in Los Angeles so I can get some more beat punk metal ass notches in my belt...They suck dude and so do you if you are a musician. I don't even need to hear you to know that. Now I'll be waiting for that fight invite lil boyeee.

  • Thank Mike. I first heard IMAGES in the early 90s and was blown away. All of the prog rock bands you mentioned were my passion as well. I wish I had a better attention span back then; I could have been on your stage:)

  • Happy birthday, Mike! Stay cool! We love you!

  • America is becoming a banana republic.

  • Hey Mike, you are a Zappa fan I see. You have great taste.

  • Never knew Portnoy went to Berklee. I went to MassArt, which is only about 5mins from Berklee. Berklee is a good school. Anyone who is serious about music for a career should go to Berklee.

  • A great musician and he seems like a really cool, down-to-earth gut. Could totally have a beer with this dude and talk music.

  • he can't drink beer or any types of alcohol anymore dude..he's a reovering alcoholic and he's been sober for a long time now..

  • @royceeeful Lol. You are correct. It was just a figure of speech......I should've said, he seems like a cool dude to just chill and have a cup of coffee with? :-P

  • Portnoy is #1

  • portnoy has very nice eyes

  • Follow your heart , that's the only "thing" to follow...indeed !

  • how can someone follow his/her heart?the heart is inside the body all the time....it would be like chasing your tail....i'm kidding

  • they were playing this style because they were following there feelings, and in the same way they change the kind of music they play, and they still play good quality music, just not always the same. That is what some angry old fans should understand.

  • nice zappa shirt

  • I thought showing off WAS part of the entrainment business. What would be the point of having people buy tickets if you weren't going to show off.

I don't know to me one of the points of entertaining is to show off and I have no problem with anyone showing the best skills one can muster.

  • kings!

  • Comment removed

  • lol you're not a musician

  • uh yes i am. don't assume things about me when you dont even know me

  • Okay then.

  • Their music is pretentious like most any other progressive band. That doesn't mean they're trying to show off, and it doesn't mean the music is bad.

These guys are very realistic and naturally have a great sense of humor. Do you have any proof anywhere that they're narcissistic, you jealous idiot? Also, you're pointing out John Myungs hair? Are you serious? You're a loser

  • I love and respect dream theater for great reasons

    1. They play the music they wanna play, they don't get pressured by the fans to "stick to their guns" (unlike Slayer who are so fucking repeative it isnt even funny)

    2. they're gods

  • I'm diggin' the ZOMBY WOOF t-shirt.

  • Mike Portnoy has something alot of people don't and that is a true passion to succeed. Live your dreams and never settle for anything less then what you want because you only live once.

  • Carpe diem :)

  • I want to thank you for following your hearts John, John and Mike. Dream Theater, in a musical way, is a huge part of my life.

  • i agree.

  • dream theater has influenced me to persue my dream of bass guitar!

  • You forgot Jordan

  • he didn't forget Jordan. myung, JP and MP were those who formed the band.

rudess did not join until 1999 with the album Metropolis Pt.2.

  • Amen, Mike Portnoy has inspired me to play drums!!!! GO DREAM THEATER

  • his my role model, just an amazing musician,

i saw them in a concert in Israel a month ago,

    ill never forget that concert

  • I like drums, But when I see Portnoy play drums, It's almost like Wow.. I'll never play at that level of play. He's considered to be of the best drummers in the world.

  • well if u practise enough you ve got a chance 2 and im not trying to sound like a mum or teacher jus saying

  • @tastefulphrasing What about James and Jordan lol.

  • i love you

  • SERIOUSLY.. people that repost chain letters like you should die now.

  • Mike Portnoy has to be the smartest HAT wearing individual most people have ever met or heard about. I've been very impressed since first listen in about "93". He gets it... My all time favorites, Peart, Pace, Ward, and oh yea Bonham, took up most of my listening hours. Other drummers that were great or even better, that had unfortunatlely 60% boring shit, barlely got a 3rd listen. I always look at it like this: The Chinese win the gold in high diving because of the degree of DIFICULTY

  • why divide these interviews up and make us watch the opening tag? it's kind of annoying

  • We do the shorter clips for a number of reasons. We don't post the entire interview and divide what we post into topics to evaluate the reaction to specific topics. This helps us as we are producing our TV and Radio and DVD Series. I agree as a viewer it would be easier to make one click and watch but . . you're not just a viewer, you are a contributer to LLM -helping us to develop insightful and in depth content to broaden our footprint... remember . . IT"S FREE!!! Thanks!!

    Greg

  • thanks greg appreciate ya puttin this up ;)

  • @LivingLegendsMusic Thanks!!!

  • It's called free marketing research, and you have just participated.

    Thanks for playing.

  • Whammy!!!

  • @daddysevenpointfiver to get more views

  • After about 84, bands under the banner of Thrash Metal were well and truly established. Some of these bands made older heavy metal bands look like Miley Cyrus, they were still heavy metal other bands were heavier as years progressed

  • First off, to all those ppl who said "Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple" are not heavy metal. You really need to brush up on your music history.

He met John Petrucci and John Myung in 1985, at Berklee. In 1985, sure - metallica had been around for 4 or so years, along with 3 or so others.

That aside, bands like the ones mentioned at the start were heavy metal in the early 80's.

  • if u want to talk about numbers, then Britney spears and crap like that is really good also... yes, i agree with the dead part. Meaning the essence of what made metallica good and famous is dead since the begining of the 90's...

  • Octavarium (with the exception of The Answer Lies Within) kicks your ass. GTFO.

  • I think that you're wrong. Plain out wrong.

  • Dead musically. I dont give a shi** to the fans like you who will buy all albums just because it's writen metallica on it...

I like DT music(not all) and I only have 4 albums...

  • Metallica was like a step to be taken, they made a lot for the metal without really playing it, it may not be a musically band, its like they just want to sell records, but they had their times, i luv one and master of puppets and many others but Death Magnetic is a shit sundae, even if its hard music its no thing a havent seen, its still metal though, so i hope they get on the right trail again, the damned master of shity motherfuking puppets trail maaaaaaan!!!!!!!!

  • What are you talking about? Metallica doesn't suck! At least not the early Metallica, which is held in high regard by almost all who enjoy rock and heavy metal! Including Mike Portnoy! Metallica shaped a genre, you can't just say they suck, because then you take all of their work under one word!

  • what kind of rediculous comment is that? mike said himself that he is not very fond of 90's metallica. too polished and bluesy, which i completely agree with. HOWEVER, 80's metallica is monumental in every sense. it's heavy, aggressive, technical and beautiful. not to mention written with the word METAL in mind. not sure how you can like metal but not anything from metallica.

  • you lost me on "technical"

  • ...And Justice For All. There are radical fluctuations between half-time and double-time rhythyms (Blackened, Dyers Eve, Frayed Ends of Sanity) and incredible orchestral use of varied instrumental textures and layering (...And Justice For All, To Live is To Die). Riffs are often drawn out into extra bars of 2/4,3/4,5/4, and 6/4, not to mention that some of their riffs are specifically written to function in unusual meters ( Dyers Eve intro in 4/4 + 3/4 or Justice outro in 6/4.

  • hes right. Lars was a completely different drummer in AJFA. Pity he resumed being a fucking prick in the 90s

  • Metallica is dead since 1989...

  • My Bag!!!...Past Tenst But.. I fell tremendous groove and feel but also crazyness!!!! And I think Portnoy is majorly above the rest I have seen him live and own his DVD's. But... in "In My Time Of Dying" Thank you John Bonhan for changing our drummer world with power and sound.. and the ability to express ultimate groove and feel...Rush said it with the spirit of radio "All this machinery making modern music" And to the drummers out there keep pushing to the bar line to the next measure.

  • if you listen closely you can hear Three's "The Word is Born of Flame" lol awesome

  • this whole set of interviews is great, very interesting stuff. I love Dream Theater.

    Mike Portnoy rules!

  • Mike is great and DT too

  • Learn your history! You, John, and John formed MAJESTY!!! Haha.

  • You speak in suck past tense????

  • lol

  • =o mike got many new tattoos this year!
