Before and during. His wife took over the farm when he became involved in politics. He had a university degree in agriculture with a specialization in fertilizer. You can make all the jokes you want about this but it was quite respected in an agrarian society such a much of Germany was at that time He put this knowledge to good use in resettling the eastern farming lands.
