Next year this album will be 30 years old. I'd love to have been alive and old enough to discover this at the time. This is even intense in 2012, let alone that long ago.
I can really hear Godflesh in the punishing relentlessness of this song. Without doubt a huge influence on many genres of music, but I suspect the extreme grind/death/industrial scene owes the most.
@RichVader Now I wouldn't go so far as to say that. Are you familiar with sludge at all? The Melvins may very well owe their very existance to the Swans. Neurosis certainly does, or at least without them they might have gone in a totally different direction after their first couple albums.
just fucking wow.......gira was putting something new and extreme out at this time..........luv the double tracked guitar..............hey, check out loutallica too.
@malkooth yea, u can never get enough loutallica.............swans should open up for them in germany or some place europe where people just let loutallica be.........american metal heads are morons
@posthumanhero I kinda think that is the point of the LouTallica collaboration...I listen to it as a voice speaking directly to them and sometimes taking on their point of view. Lou has never sounded as alive. I fucking love it. What is it 'for a hundred dollars little dog and be lifted up to come face to face with that cold hearted pussy.'
@malkoot totally agree.......it can be taken on several different levels.........i tend to prefer the level where we exist here in 2011 and can't open our email without having some female extortionist beckon us......and we can't watch porn without some ad telling us how small our penis' are.......and we can't wear clothes that fit us any more......and we are turning gay in chatrooms and facebook degrades us........nobody is talking about how men are so [angry] these days -- lulu does.
Just imagine turning this album up so loud the floors shakes, with the lights out at night, watching aliens while tripping...every time I listen to this song I can't help but think of that especially seeing the album cover which kind of remind me of the aliens.
@gaggletalgeese yeah right, even though this album was release in 1983, the year the red hot chili peppers supposedly formed. these guys literally had two EP's and two LP's released before rhcp even released their first album. i seriously doubt either of these bands had any idea of one another at that time.. your either mindless or trolling.
@bloodyrockfire industrial/post metal? must you fuckers always come up with genre after genre and in 1983 post metal wasnt a word only in the past decade have we come up with such bullshit if you want to get accurate they were called no wave along with early sonic youth and godflesh
@apathyisignoranc Yeah, you're actually right, your discription fits indeed better.I must say though this post-metal was a movement of post-punk by Godflesh taking influence from Killing Joke
@apathyisignoranc By the way if you happened to misunderstand me I was labeling Godflesh not Swans.I know very well they aren't industrial metal.Just sayin'.
I actually read a book about death metal and some ND members met when they were looking for Throbbing gristle bootlegs.. This sounds like it inspired the slow parts of Scum.
I don't get it...
These guys kinda suck.

Damn Napalm Death used the same feel of music, but they just added a blast beat thing to it, so this mix became well-known as "grindcore".

This is apparently one of Napalm Death's biggest influences and it's where the "grind" in "grindcore" comes from. I hear it.
