  • I use an older laptop to program eproms via an ECP Parallel Port (LPT), This video really helped me out with the idea fix its battery. Easy and works great.

    Cheers

  • You completely skipped how to solder the cells together and you installed batteries that are bigger than the originals, this could easily lead the battery overheating. You should only use the same exact cells when rebuilding a battery, especially a lithium chemistry battery.

  • @christo930 17670 vs 18650, not much of a difference there. In fact the batteries have outlived that laptop.

  • OK Juga

  • Where do you order the new cells? Can you even order individual cells? Because i looked and i can't find them anywhere. I have 6 cells to replace and i haven't even got the serial numbers off them yet because i didn't open the case. I don't know if i can even buy them new.

  • Man, you are fixing laptop batteries in dinosaurs. those are gone, nobody use that junk anymore, BESIDES, the chinese make those batteries for 25 or 30 bucks and is way cheaper than you expend in those.

  • @paunocudatuamae Tell that to people in industrial settings who need a laptop with a serial port to configure some multi-million dollar piece of machinery.

$25 batteries? You get what you pay for.

  • @133MHzz it depends on battery. But to remake, i would prefer that one .

  • @133MHzz USB to RS232, no?

  • @stellari81 Those work with some devices but not with others since they don't generate true RS232 spec signals. When doing Serious Business stuff, nothing beats a real COM or LPT port.

  • @133MHzz You definitely get what you pay for :( I bought a $20 dell latitude D610 battery and not just that it doesnt hold the charge like it should.. but the overall build quality is bad and the LED indicator is not even functional.. just imitating what the original battery had. :/

Thank you for posting this.. I'll try to attempt installing some new cells into my old battery ;)

  • @paunocudatuamae I'd love to have an old laptop like this so I could have a dedicated DOS laptop for older games.

  • if we use higher amp li-ion battery . Then laptop duration will increase or not ??

  • @ankur41289 Exactly.

  • pinches laptops tan pa la verga de viejas

  • @DANYDHSV Chanfle!

  • W0w very educational...thank you....i hope it will not explode when i try it..

  • How would you reset the EEPROM? Why is the maker of this video not considering this?

  • when part 3 came I want it

  • useful clip, thanks for posting it !

  • Great educational video dude. Thanks for sharing.

  • cool,should i try it

  • my laptop battery is good condition but when i unplugged the power code battery life has only 5 minutes. i mean it showing dead. what should i do this problem?

  • wanna try this on my dying laptop battery

  • Please tell me where you get the li ion batteries with the metal tap. I found some on the internet but they dont have the metal tap on them.

  • @215810 I got them locally, and unfortunately they stopped carrying them ever since.

  • @215810 go to megabatteries. com remove space

  • @215810 go to megabatteries

  • hi man , i am battery of my labtop dell studio , but i see the battery have a metal tap connection together ( each two battery connected together ) if i disconnected this tape can i reconnected together with new tape ??

  • thank you very much , but i want ask : if i am using Energizer recharger battery , its work easy ?

the lab top battery capacity 4800mAh ( i don't know that for single battery or all battery - as one battery on lab top - )

and energizer 2450mAh ( same thing i don't know its for single battery or for 4 battery in one case )

  • @hamodyeee What about the chemistry of the batteries? You can't replace Li-Ion with NiMH or NiCd.

  • @133MHzz i think it li-io but i am caring about capacity ,

which best battery can i use ??

can you show me how to rebuilding battery of lab top studio ?

  • very nice, could u show us also the solderind process. isnt so easy

  • why do you even want to revive a ibm thinkpad?

  • @rodebest Why not?

  • @rodebest LOL

  • Its better to buy a compatible battery. I bought my HP Pavilion DV2000 Battery from doodon.com

  • modern batteries have an EEPROM which holds some very important parameters such as: no. of charge/discharge cycles and remaining capacity. Depending on those parameters, BIOS will throw an error saying "your battery is dead, go buy a new one" and decide not to keep the laptop running for more than 5 minutes.

HOW to reset the EEPROM values to factory ones ?

  • @masster64 There's a piece of software which does that by connecting the EEPROM through the parallel port, but you've gotta pay for it. I haven't been able to find a cracked version anywhere.

  • @133MHzz

I guess we're talking about SmartBattery Workshop and AccPlus to name a few...

  • @masster64 Bingo.

  • @133MHzz

What is the software that is used to reset the EEPROM?

Does it work with all laptop batteriers?

What if the laptop does not have parallel port?

  • You made it look easy! Thank you!

Since those are 1.2 volt nickel metal hydride batteries, what about using several rechargeable nickel metal hydride batteries? They are smaller but also 1.2 volts.

  • @AppleSouffle Those are 3.6V Lithium Ion cells. Really old laptops use 1.2V NiMH.

  • Ok...I had a quick question for u all...I have this dell studio laptop whose battery is in top shape...Recently I decided to keep it plugged in even after it says "100% charge" instead of charging/decharging all the time....It's a Lithium ion battery and I wanted to know that does it "stop charging" after it is fully charged ? In other words, does it start using power after it is fully charged ?

  • @smartdon007 This is a good reasonable question...

  • WHAT IS THIS 2001?

  • I have IBM also how do you open up the battery case?????

    Thanks

  • I used to have a P1 133mhz.... I got a few ES samples as well. Nice vid will come in handy.

  • I have acer extensa 6600 Which type of cells i use?

  • I opened up my laptop's battery pack. Here is what i found, the pack accommodates three pair of sony 18650 Li-Ion cells with the capacity of 2200mah.

Some customs confiscated UltraFire li-ion battery(BRC 18650) with capacity of 3000mah are being sold for amazingly cheap price nearby my location.

I would like to know whether its a nice idea to replace my sony cell with ultrafire cells?

I'll deeply appreciate any comments, recommendation or help.

    Best regards,

    Lubnan.S

  • @lubnaanshaikh Definitely! Those UltraFire cells have a higher capacity than your Sony cells so that means that your laptop will run longer on battery than when it was new!

  • @133MHzz Thank you for your reply, your reply does give me lot of courage to go ahead & do this operation. I would also like to appreciate you for uploading this clip, it's really rich of details & useful information.

  • @133MHzz I don't think 3000mAh 18650 batterys exist yet, anything over 2400 is probably a scam - That's just what I discovered after googling around and reading up on a battery forum

  • @Brendanman5000 Thanks for the heads-up. Me & a friend were suspecting the same thing when such cells started popping up all around in Chinese stuff, but we didn't bother to investigate.

  • nice. very well explained. when can we expect part 3. can't wait. you clearly know what you're talking about. i'll be waiting, thanks for the info.

  • loool playing starcraft on this laptops :P

  • Hey, I have one question what happens if i buy sony batteries of 2600mAh each and use it, my doubt is if i use battries like that would i be able to use the laptop for like 6 hours with only one single charge?

    thanks

  • @hadesmcz It depends on how much power you are drawing. I would say no more than 2 hours if you did it right.

  • Thanks dude, It was so useful ;)

  • Nice work! One thing I noticed, though: your original battery had six cells, but you rebuilt it with eight. How does that work?

An engineer told me you have to be careful with the charge controller. If you wait too long after disconnecting the existing batteries, the memory gets erased, and then your battery will not work anymore, even with new cells.

  • DANG! How old is the laptop on the left?!

  • @marek857 It dates from 1997 or 98. I've got even older ones :-P.

Now I've got a new laptop but the old ones are always sweet for experimentation or playing old games.

  • @133MHzz why not use virtualpc or something...?

  • Thx for this video upload , i got a old laptop where the battery broken of is.

Im gonna try it , fun fun

  • man can you show men how to open the batter pack? You skipped that part and just had the pack open already. I would love to replace my dead dell battery with new batteries. I can't figure out for the life of me how to open the battery pack on my dell inspirion700m thank!

  • I normally run linux on these old guys. Same basic functionality with a lot less head room. Damn Small Linux (DSL) will run on basically anything lol. A little nicer machine use something like a custom build of Ubuntu. Good call on reviving the old Think Pad. IBM used to make beasts of computers that were like tanks. They were built with the business traveler in mind so they were really sturdy and rugged.

  • You should have a half gig of Ram to use XP on any laptop. More if running VIsta.

  • I now have a more modern laptop with 1.25 GB of RAM, getting more memory for that old Thinkpad ain't easy nor cheap. I've found out that you can get away with only 256MB if you use it for light and simple tasks, but as you said 512 is the ideal minimum.

The Toshiba is now running Windows 98 like a champ :-D

  • dont put xp on that old laptop put windows 98 on it.

98 is faster then xp on older computers

  • COMPLETLY WRONG lol xp can be faster XP

  • that's weird cause my win 2000 laptop almost doesn't play music on xp

  • @206robert206 ..... thats probly a driver issue

  • im sure its not the drivers since it takes like 3min to boot up

  • @206robert206 ....

  • Windows 98 in no more window xp is better then windows 98!!!

  • How is the best way too open the battery packs without marring them up too badly?

  • There are some special plastic tools for opening up cell phones without damaging the plastic. I don't have those but if you could get hold of them I presume it would be really easy to open them up without visible damage.

Me? I just squeeze them really hard a few times until the internal glue loosens up and then I just pry them open with a butter knife. Damaging the plastic somewhat is unavoidable this way but it can be minimized with patience.

  • Are there cells that will hold a longer charge?

  • How is the laptop battery volt calculated.

For example, Is a 2-cell battery that says on the label (7.4) volts, a combination of 2 (3.7) volt batteries added togeather (3.7 + 3.7 = 7.4)? or is the 2-cell battery really 2 (7.4) volt batteries?

  • All Lithium Ion cells output 3.7V, so in your example a 7.4V 2-cell battery would use two 3.7V cells wired in series (3.7 + 3.7). A 7.4V 4-cell battery would have two parallel groups of two 3.7V cells wired in series. Wiring cells in series adds up the voltage, wiring them in parallel adds up the current.

  • ok, thanks.

and, how about the mAh? in a 2 cell,

say the mah per battery is 3000. Does it become 3000 + 3000 = 6000?

  • If you connect them in parallel, yes, the current (mAh) adds up.

If you connect them in series, the voltage (V) adds up.

So basically you add batteries in series to get the desired voltage and in parallel to get the desired current.

  • Old laptops have so much more character than new ones.

  • what's that little metal thingy hanging at the ends of the batteries?

  • Tabs for soldering wires on. You must buy batteries with pre-welded tabs because soldering on the battery itself is dangerous.

  • @133MHzz

    ok thanks for telling me.

Also, is "Tenergy Li-Ion 18650 3.7V 2600mAh rechargeable battery" a good battery to use?

  • Yup.

  • ty for the information helps me alot

  • "Lets pop that sucker in" - AVGN?

  • crossover between AVGN and lukemorse1 :-P

  • Where can I find some 18650 300mah replacements? Lots of lower mah ones, but none in the size I need.Tried it with 17670 300mahs but they would not fit in my Dell battery pack..

  • You can get them online at sites like DealExtreme, BatteryJunction or MegaBatteries. No big deal if the cells are a couple hundred milliamps lower (e.g. 2700mAh vs 3000).

I've managed to fit 17670s in 18650 battery packs. It's a really tight fit, but it's doable.

  • Good clear useful vid, keep up the good work.

  • hey, you didn't say anything about the ibm laptop having 6 batteries originally and the 9 you replaced it with... how do you work out how to wire them up?

    great video btw!

  • Do some reading on Ohm's Law and series/parallel circuits. Cells in parallel increase the current, in series they increase the voltage. The original batt. had 6 cells in 3 series groups of two. You can add an extra cell in parallel to each of these groups and increase the battery's total capacity :-). The battery had the extra space, so why not? :-P

  • Your tutorial videos are awesome! I will mimic this build on one of my own old laptop computers. I can't wait for part 3!

  • That is so awesome! I always see laptops with dead batteries at the thrift store and would love to pick one up and fix it up. Thanks a lot for the info!

  • Woot. I loved this. Atlantis no nazo SCARED me though!

  • thank you!!! Lukemorse1 mentioned you now i can save some money

  • Educational. Thanks man.

  • wow that could save alot of money then just buying a new one but my battery doesnt open.

btw i want ur old toshiba laptop! XD JK lol

  • None of the batteries are easy to open (the laptop maker doesn't want you to do this). In my first video I showed how I opened my laptop battery by twisting it very hard, you might need to use a knife or a Dremel tool to get it opened up.

  • Good work, and thanks for posting such useful information - keep it coming.
