When I was about five or six I was prone to raiding my parents' collection of albums to listen to (which also led to a whole lot of Renaissance, It's A Beautiful Day, Moody Blues, Beatles, ELP, Led Zeppelin and Simon & Garfunkel). For a while, I thought I had two favorite bands: Jefferson Airplane and Starship. When I told my mum that she laughed for about an hour before she managed to explain. And to this day I love JA and this is one of my favorite songs! <3
That's my favorite song of them, the voices and the music is the finest of them. I can even cry when I perform it, without any influence on me. Speaks to me in another level. So high
Prolly the best thing I ever heard from them.. Just one question for die hard fans.. Anyone knows what "Ice Cream Phoenix" stands for?! THe title itself, what does it represent?!
@MaccabeeRidah in literature ice cream usually represents a good thing that is fleeting. ice cream is good but it eventutally melts, hence all good things must come to an end
The beatles, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, the who, cream, the animals jimi hendrix, jefferson airplane, deep purple, neil young, bufalo springfield, csny, csn, the great society black sabbath, the band, joan baez, traveling wilburys, wings, the heartbrakers and many more. choose any you cant go wrong
I am just glad when I was little that my parents did not let me listen to my generations music in the car, even though some of the music is good its not the same as it was back then. I am 17 and I have been listening to this music for 17 years and they have been amazing.
This is quintessential Airplane--raw, harmonious, original....and NOT on the top 40! 'White Rabbit' and 'Somebody to Love' were the glitter, but the Airplane gold had to be mined (IMHO). Thanks for the post!
There's four of them singing on this and it just smokes. No bullshit double-tracking. I think its the first time that Grace and Jorma's vocals were up front together on a song. That's what gives it that little something different. What a band.
Forgot about this song ,probably because my friends & I had no frame of reference when it posed "are you so old that you've no childhood?"Or, for that matter declared "pictures of sadness are not what they seem".Now it seems to have more relevance.
@hippyemochick1 Is there something about this song that literally seizes you ? Do share Grace's vocal range? The reason I ask is because there has to be more of you in it rather than approaching it from the exterior . i.e two guys wanting you to sing it.
The styles are different but compelling lyrics still are out there. tTy this one here on youtube. The band is Chevvelle. the song is " Jars " The indignant attitude at an establishment that stabs the people is the same. "We can't both become the same pawn That's made to fall Oil that taste like Blood stole the summer scent From me to you You're stabbing me through you You're stabbing you through him And betting most of This world
Why? You can't pick what you listen to and share it with anyone? that's what maturity is. Knowing what's cool for you and sticking with it instead of following the pack, Free yourself man !
Be glad you didn't live under the Damocletian sword of nuclear annihilation that inspired the song lyrics. Now lyrics are inspired by death of the environment. And yet the young still see hope for propagating the race of men.
@WNTW13 The old musics still there. And new and amazing bands (and scenes) spring up all the time- though most remain local bands never getting air play.
Go find out what's happening now- come back and tell us old farts where to find it!
I bought this when I was about 14 (when it came out) and listened to it over and over and over- it literally shaped my world view. I never did drugs; music was my drug and from this I went onto Coltrane, Miles, Messiaen, Reich and beyond.
I don't think it was a matter of "hook" for airplay as it was as a matter of lyrics and censorship. It was not "politically correct" with the establishment that was in control at that time.

How come so many of our kids hate JA? Did JA speak too directly to US?
Mine is 26, a fine drummer, and a big fan of Lou Reed and Gram Parsons. Thank God for that at least!

I got this album for free or a collector's bin. I listened to this album almost everyday; so when i get drunk i will sing you the whole album. lol

@doorman292 Tnx for the answer.. It seems logical when you put it that way and then compare it with lyrics..

I love how when I read the comments to bands like Jefferson Airplane everyone sounds like they actually completed elementary school.

This song has both a strummed acoustic guitar and Jack's doomsday bass. Yeah, "Baby, how do you feel?"

Wish our generation had any music approaching this good.
1960's-1980's: Hendrix, Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, the list goes on.
1990's: Vanilla Ice
2000's: Miley Cyrus tops iTunes charts for over a month.
'nuff said.

Are you so old that you've no childhood?
Is your timeline so unreal,
That all of your sunsets come in the morning?
Baby tell, How do you feel?
There is nothing more sad than one who is afraid to die - unless it's one who is afraid to live...

My favorite song from "Creation". It doesn't (didn't?) have the "hook" for airplay, but it is a gem.
And, *YES*, all my sunsets come in the morning....
