spottybott quote "rip alex a good man who saw through the shite", absolutely I couldn't agree more,. Alex, with The Soul Band or Big Soul Band worked in Germany in the mid 60's, not "just after WWII", apart from the fact that he would have been about 10 or 11 "just after WWII".
This is a beautiful song and tune. It was cleverly used in Cabaret to show how evil personified (Hitler) abused innocence and beauty ( the child soldiers) to pursue his twisted ambitions. It is somehow very moving because the sincerity of the lyrics and the poignant tune is in stark contrast to what we now know was the brutal and catastrophic reality. Terrible irony.
It's about a guy suffering the nightmare of the trenches, dreaming and praying for better days, The imagery of this video is bullshit and Alex would be mortified by this. Fuck off.
Alex changes the lyric from, 'belongs to me' to 'belongs to THEE' he was famously a pacifist as was his father, not easy given when and where they lived. When this song was released there was considerable heated discussion in the British music press concerning all of the points raised. NO ONE WHO WAS A FAN OF SAHB EVER THOUGH FOR ONE MOMENT THAT ALEX OR SAHB WERE NAZI OR PROMOTING NAZISM. We all knew that Alex liked to challenge his audience to think, thats why we ALL loved him.
well Caberet the film is about the nazis so of course it relates to that era. It was probably written so as not to use existing songs by the nazis and thus run the risk however remote of paying them copyright or royalties. A bit like the1992 film "romper stomper" where the band were not nazis but were asked to write nazi sounding words or the Odessa File where Andrew Lloyd Weber composed "nazi" music so they would not have to risk the same. Hope that makes sense. Makes sense though
The words in the film that the HJ youth sings are not the same as Alex sings. This is a beautiful song - please don't let us connect it to the nazi's! Alex would had hated that - he loved being shocking but neither he or ant band members were nazi sympathises!
I always thought this song was meant to shock, and Alex loved to shock. The idea that the Nazis could have something lovely representing them - and of course by singing it as he did Alex was taking the p*ss. Great band doing a great song, and as anti-facist/racist/reactionary as anyone could get!
I saw Alex on stage in the 1970,s I remember him shouting out "All nazis are bastards" lol. If you listen to the words of this song, he sings "Father " not fatherland, so it could be interpreted as having a spiritual meaning.
If its jewish then Mr Hitler was right to protet his own country wasnt he!? If jews wanted to rule the world he like many would not want it, itys similar with muslims today .
When I saw the band, and they performed it, Alex said: 'this is a fascist song; but we're going to turn it round and use it against the bastards!; End of story!
It's called appropriation. Harvey has appropriated a song from Cabaret, which is quite chilling in the film, depicting, as it does, a child indoctrinated by nazism. Listening to this, I'd say it's meaning here is deliberately vague. There is a hint of menace in it (as in a lot of SAHB songs) as well as a degree of innocence.
the song was written for the musical cabaret in 1966. it has nothing to do with nazis, germany or anything resembling it. the song was written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, both who are jewish. try looking it up.
@lenthe9th this song has allways interested me. Thank you for the heads up because I could never work out how such a beautiful song, well sung could be used to sutch a purpose. Although given the power of the nazi propoganda machine anything is possible.
This is a soldiers prayer from WW1, not an anthem for the Nazis, a simple plea from a country boy who remebers all that is good and which he longs for, as redcrowdemon points out, 'irony, friends' To all who seek to judge, first seek to understand, please
I'm a real enemy of any kind of violence & war in fact, but seriously i want to say... it is not any song or melody makes anything bad or political... its the single person or humans put anything into it and abuse for whatever...instead of only enjoy it as it simply is... a creation of an artist who wants to entertain! The sun on the meadow is summery warm The stag in the forest runs free But gathered together to greet the storm Tomorrow belongs to me The branch on the linden is leafy and green The Rhine gives its gold to the sea (Gold to the sea) But somewhere a glory awaits unseen Tomorrow belongs to me Now Fatherland, Fatherland, show us the sign Your children have waited to see The morning will come When the world is mine Tomorrow belongs to me
The lyrics of the song has nothing to do with any particular ISM's, meaning leaning toward any particular ideology. To suggest something else to this song is distortion. This song is a patriotic song dedicated to the country and people of Germany, that includes the good, bad and indifferent of all religions and creed.
A great patriotric song, grossly misunderstood. This song is for the land and people of Germany and has nothing to do with the promotion of Nazis or the persecution of Jews.Don't distort the beautiful song with ugly politics.
I think the images accompanying this song are a well-meant (if a tiny bit heavy-handed) attempt to emphasise the point that it's all about context. The song is one about togetherness, optimism, etc, and could be appropriated by any group or individual with a sense of purpose. The fact that neo-Nazis use this song - unaware it was written by two gay Jews - is one of Life's more glorious and hilarious jokes. I've never commented on a video before, by the way: did I do it right?
@CrackTownFoxy You asked: 'Did I do it right?'. Answer: You did it just fine, my friend. :)
- my only very small quibble ('cos I agree with 99% of your post) is the ideas of 'togetherness and optimism'. Both are definitenitely there, of course, but there is also a hint of menace in the final 'Father, Oh, father', verse in which 'A morning will come when the world is thine', something a bit nastier, which maybe couldn't be appropriated by any group or individual with a sense of purpose (?)
Alex played the circuit in Germany when the country was still in bits - literally - cities devastated by mankind's self-destruct mechanism! He saw what the followers of this song and it's ethos had done to "Der Vaterland" not to mention the rest of the world!
this song was inspired by the caberet film which was out a few years earlier.the little nazi boy sings it at an outside cafe in germanland. Alex liked it. His old man was a pacifist. this is very tongue in cheek.
Swearing doesn't diminish a man's IQ son. Mozart swore like a trooper and he was a genius. Only a ''thick cunt'' would think that swearing or not is an indication of IQ. I'd test it with your meagre offering any day of any week of any fucking year. Now excuse me, I have a partial differential equation to solve... I'm sure you have some shelves to stack.
If anyone is too thick to ''get'' this video and song combination, let me explain. The victorious and glorious images of Hitlerism and Naxzism are juxtaposed by the latter images of destruction and chaos. Now, I know that half the human race is below average intelligence, but the rest of us can't be held hostage to the thickest cunts on the planet.
Alex was a great artist from Glasgow in Scotland. He was one of the most interesting and thought provoking artists that the UK has ever produced. He was theatrical, musical and hard hitting all at once.
He was just fucking great. A real European hero of the arts. Glasgow has produced great artists in the past Century....Alex was one of them.
@kara1464 The song is about 'The Fatherland' and was originally used in the film cabaret, sung by Germans and Nazis. How does that insult Alex Harvey? Alex himself knew full well about the song and what it stood for. He was not a Nazi though, he was a singer performing a great song.
Have you any idea of what Alex Harvey felt about the Nazis? If I felt the same way and I created a song as beautiful as HIS version of TBTM, then I would be really insulted.
@kara1464 Neither you, nor I, know what he thought. The song was beautiful in the film but that did not change the emotional message that was conveyed. In fact it made the horror of what happened all the more powerful. The whole song is to do with that period of German history.
I think he made it clear what he thought. Alex's lyrics are beautiful. They have nothing to do with the Nazi movement and I stand by my opinion that those images are an insult to Alex and, as I say, HIS version... not the one in the movie.
I saw the SAHB about six times in the 1970s. One time in Liverpool Alex Harvey came out dressed as Adolf Hitler and sang "I was Framed". It was hilarious. However, after he'd finished he gave the audience a lecture about how bad Hitler was and no one should be in any doubt that he was just taking the piss.
"Tomorrow Belongs to Me"? I think he just liked the song but anyone who sings it is going to be branded a Nazi. Don't think anyone else's covered it. Shame, nice song.
Nope your wrong. This song was around WAY before Cabaret, and wasn't originally used by the Nazi's, it was folk song before hand used for patriotism in other countries.
@eMjAYx22 This is an original song written by Kandler & Ebb specifically for the movie Cabaret (1972);
So although it sounds as if it was written by Nazis IT WAS NOT.
Similar to Horst Wessel Lied (Horst Wessel song) that was the Nazi anthem and was banned (except for educational purposes) in Austria & Germany in 1945.
Wessel was murdered by pro-Communists in 1930 and the music (he wrote the words) & words played at his funeral. By 1934 it was widely played at Nazi rallies.
Colin, I can't see it. Alex purposefully changed the words to change the meaning of the song. Oh Father Oh Father is not the same as Oh Fatherland Fatherland. Yes, I can see the devastation in those last images, but that devastation was not just Germany's.
To put Alex's lyrics to these images dismisses Alex's reasons for the changes in the lyrics. It has nothing to do with Nazi Germany and nothing to do with Cabaret. Showing the devastation doesn't put any meaning to it.
@kara1464 An insult to whom, kara? The song was written by Jewish composers for the film 'Cabaret', which, if you didn't notice, was set in Berlin just as the Nazis came to power... Alex's treatment - moving gradually from innocent romance to strident aggression by the end, echoes perfectly both the film and the changing social attitudes of 1930's Germany. It would be an insult to Mr Harvey (RIP) if the video ignored these facts...
Or would you prefer pictures of fluffy bunny rabbits? :)
@kara1464 this song shows us how a good idea can be in fact a very bad idea and how quickly it can take off and take control ruining lives and changing the world forever.
I hope everyone bears it in mind that Ratzinger was brought up in this philosophy probably by choice rather than conscription! He is a disgrace to the office of pope!

Duh ! Exactly how would you get the USA to rejoin Great Britain ?
Or the rest of the World to revert to British, Spanish, Dutch or French colonies ?
I mean it's just possible that the Israelis may object to the dissolution of Israel and they really do happen to have Nuclear weapons - actually ready to use !!
Perhaps you can define "easily undone" ?
However IMO no country should be allowed to exist where religious law is part of secular law.
"xactly how would you get the USA to rejoin Great Britain ?"
Ask the Jewbos & Slavemasons who've been trying to do that for the last 150 years.
"I mean it's just possible that the Israelis may object to the dissolution of Israel and they really do happen to have Nuclear weapons - actually ready to use !!
Perhaps you can define "easily undone" ?"
You're right. The Jews occupying Palestine are evil. Where will they fire they're nukes? Gaza? Ramalah? Or Rome?
"Now Fatherland, Fatherland, show us the sign Your children have waited to see The morning will come When the world is mine Tomorrow belongs to me Tomorrow belongs to me Tomorrow belongs to me Tomorrow belongs to me The babe in his cradle is closing his eyes The blossom embraces the bee But soon says the whisper, arise, arise Tomorrow belongs to me Tomorrow belongs to me"
Friends, please, it's called irony... but beautifully delivered in a way that the song's composers would have appreciated, IMO. Those few minutes in the park in Cabaret when a pretty singalong turns into a virtual Nurnberg rally tell us more about the human psyche than most films ever will, and the sparkle of fascism before things get ugly. Alex knew all that, *of course* or he wouldn't be singing the bloody thing...
@TumbrelJockey Thanks for positive feedback (same too to MakinMagicFractals). It bugs me when I see Alex Harvey badmouthed or misrepresented. Music may not have any have any obvious function, but sometimes it can be emotionally educational - as in this song: Alex's take on it - beautifully delivered at the start descending into a robotic, militiaristic goose-step that echoes the Cabaret episode, works because it makes you love it before you realise what you've gotten involved with...
@redcrowdemon one of the scariest scenes in any film , ever ......the innocent face of the singer beginning to turn into hate , with the others in the beer garden following like sheep - except the old man who has seen it all before . As had the audiences in the cinemas .....
Great stuff! SAHB were so cool! Quite funny that so many neo-nazis have adopted the song as an anthem,as it was written by two geezers who were both Jewish and gay.
@mwchinbach Makes perfect sense. Hitler himself was gay (it's a fact - read Hidden Hitler by Lothar Machtan) and possibly slightly Jewish - no one really knows who his paternal grandpa was. His favourite songwriters were Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen (OK, I made up the last bit).
@mwchinbach In fact, in his serious and well-researched book Machtan claims that almost entire Nazi regime's top brass were Eton John-oriented. Joe Goebbels used to get very upset about it - he was just about the only one with traditional values. That explains why German women did so much knitting in those days - not much demand for anything else.
@billymacfly I'm not a Nazi, you moron. The Nazis were losers. They failed to understand how much US USSR UK were all Jews' niggers. They failed. Now we have the filthy, pathetic, useless, offensive, shit, crap, unwatchable, obscene, unlistenable "culture" that the Jews and Slavemasons have shit on "the West"!!!
The Nazis unfortunately failed to deal with the Jew Problem, which has only gotten worse since the end of the Second Jew World War. Now these children of the devil (John 8:44) are setting up a Third Jew World War.
Of course not. Don't be stupid. The Kurds aren't a vile malevalence sucking the life out of the planet, are they? Do the Kurds control all US media and run all the banking scams? Why do make such stupid arguments?
You really are an idiot - there are many British Jews who are very embarrassed by the actions of Israel and most British deplore their heavy-handed tactics and blatent disregard of UN resolutions.
And I fail to see any influence of Jewish music in rock, pop or hip-hop etc.
Perhaps you think Jews originated Gospel and Blues ?
To be honest I'm guessing you're just jealous because you were born in a religion that doesn't let you enjoy life.
What a dick - thee's a lot more to a company than ownership.
"Oh the poor dears ?" - Yes in exactly the same way that many British Muslims are embarassed by terrorism in the name of Islam.
If you must know I think the creation of Isreal was a mistake in the first place, but I do not believe it's something that can be undone now - however the occupation of terrotories beyond the original designated borders is despicable and should be sorted by the UN asap.
not sure who created the vid, but if you research the reason why Alex chose to do this song, it hs NOTHING to do with the awful, venomous nazi party and its ilk. Alex does this song justice and then some. March on.
The images have nothing to do with Alex Harvey's thoughts or motivations. They are my connections with the song, Germany in the 1930's. The vid finishes with the destruction of the Nazi ideal, if you want a moral ending. Otherwise it is just the history of the period.
@AndyManilow Good Shout Andy,if u know any thing about Alex Harvey you wouldn't be so fecking stupid to question why he sang this ! Learn, educate your sweet selves, and then have an opinion!

Shame, nice song.
treefrog1956 1 year ago
@hawkmoon03111951
Nope your wrong. This song was around WAY before Cabaret, and wasn't originally used by the Nazi's, it was folk song before hand used for patriotism in other countries.
eMjAYx22 1 year ago
@eMjAYx22 This is an original song written by Kandler & Ebb specifically for the movie Cabaret (1972);

@kara1464 Naw its no... its Irony! Have you watched and listened to it till the end?
colinmcb 1 year ago
@colinmcb
Showing the devastation doesn't put any meaning to it.
kara1464 1 year ago

"I think the creation of Isreal [sic] was a mistake in the first place, but I do not believe it's something that can be undone now" ???
Why not? Was it an act of God or something?
It can be easily undone, and would have been undone already if the Zionist Entity didn't exist (as it does) as a parasite on the American taxpayer.

Ask the Jewbos & Slavemasons who've been trying to do that for the last 150 years.

TumbrelJockey 1 year ago
@TumbrelJockey Thanks for positive feedback (same too to MakinMagicFractals). It bugs me when I see Alex Harvey badmouthed or misrepresented. Music may not have any have any obvious function, but sometimes it can be emotionally educational - as in this song: Alex's take on it - beautifully delivered at the start descending into a robotic, militiaristic goose-step that echoes the Cabaret episode, works because it makes you love it before you realise what you've gotten involved with...
redcrowdemon 1 year ago
@redcrowdemon one of the scariest scenes in any film , ever ......the innocent face of the singer beginning to turn into hate , with the others in the beer garden following like sheep - except the old man who has seen it all before . As had the audiences in the cinemas .....
regularguytoo 1 year ago
@redcrowdemon If you watch the Cabaret scene it starts out so innocently---you are correct it is irony. Anyone who thinks not just does not get it.

mwchinbach 1 year ago
@mwchinbach Makes perfect sense. Hitler himself was gay (it's a fact - read Hidden Hitler by Lothar Machtan) and possibly slightly Jewish - no one really knows who his paternal grandpa was. His favourite songwriters were Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen (OK, I made up the last bit).
FlyingJunk 1 year ago
@FlyingJunk Bob and Leonard! LOL! And maybe everyone's a bit gay ,and it's only "nazi's" who make a big deal out of denying it.
mwchinbach 1 year ago
@mwchinbach In fact, in his serious and well-researched book Machtan claims that almost entire Nazi regime's top brass were Eton John-oriented. Joe Goebbels used to get very upset about it - he was just about the only one with traditional values. That explains why German women did so much knitting in those days - not much demand for anything else.

If you must know I think the creation of Isreal was a mistake in the first place, but I do not believe it's something that can be undone now - however the occupation of terrotories beyond the original designated borders is despicable and should be sorted by the UN asap.

The images have nothing to do with Alex Harvey's thoughts or motivations. They are my connections with the song, Germany in the 1930's. The vid finishes with the destruction of the Nazi ideal, if you want a moral ending. Otherwise it is just the history of the period.
