This is a beautiful song and tune. It was cleverly used in Cabaret to show how evil personified (Hitler) abused innocence and beauty ( the child soldiers) to pursue his twisted ambitions. It is somehow very moving because the sincerity of the lyrics and the poignant tune is in stark contrast to what we now know was the brutal and catastrophic reality. Terrible irony.

well Caberet the film is about the nazis so of course it relates to that era. It's called appropriation. Harvey has appropriated a song from Cabaret, which is quite chilling in the film, depicting, as it does, a child indoctrinated by nazism. I saw the SAHB about six times in the 1970s. One time in Liverpool Alex Harvey came out dressed as Adolf Hitler and sang "I was Framed". It was hilarious. However, after he'd finished he gave the audience a lecture about how bad Hitler was and no one should be in any doubt that he was just taking the piss.

Similar to Horst Wessel Lied (Horst Wessel song) that was the Nazi anthem and was banned (except for educational purposes) in Austria & Germany in 1945.

Wessel was murdered by pro-Communists in 1930 and the music (he wrote the words) & words played at his funeral. By 1934 it was widely played at Nazi rallies.

Colin, I can't see it. Alex purposefully changed the words to change the meaning of the song. Oh Father Oh Father is not the same as Oh Fatherland Fatherland. Yes, I can see the devastation in those last images, but that devastation was not just Germany's.

To put Alex's lyrics to these images dismisses Alex's reasons for the changes in the lyrics. It has nothing to do with Nazi Germany and nothing to do with Cabaret. Showing the devastation doesn't put any meaning to it.

not sure who created the vid, but if you research the reason why Alex chose to do this song, it hs NOTHING to do with the awful, venomous nazi party and its ilk. Alex does this song justice and then some. March on.

The images have nothing to do with Alex Harvey's thoughts or motivations. They are my connections with the song, Germany in the 1930's. The vid finishes with the destruction of the Nazi ideal, if you want a moral ending. Otherwise it is just the history of the period.
