The three main sects ---protestants, orthodox and the catholic community--- are a somewhat different socialization (noticeable to outsiders). I once tried to enlist in the US Navy. Three things happened at MEPS:

1) My recruiter screwed my ethnicity, and listed me as Hispanic - he told me to affirm it anyway because "Hispanics get better advancement, anyway." I declined.

Free will to me doesn't mean that you are free to choose anything. Like choosing to believe that 2+2=5. It's just that when faced with two possible decisions, you have the ability to choose one or the other. Determinism, as I understood it, means that you are not able to do that.
