From the golden age of Hollywood- a classic movie that i have enjoyed since a boy- the music, the story, the cinematography, the actors- and that marvellous love story, and that incredible kiss under the arch- the most wonderful one in all film history to me.
We could use some beauty and sentiment- and certainly some hope today. All of the things that Lost Horizon gave us.
Sorry, I know there are books on this subject but like oldmoviemusic..I thought James Hilton was the author of this..surely there would be copyright issues if he had 'stolen' some-one else's idea/thesis? Beautiful book and film..the 1937 movie anyway..it has brought joy to so many people regardless of who first initiated it, isn't that the main thing?Pity the world now can't think like this.
I really liked the book, even though the ending and some unexplained parts just pissed me off. It's one of those novels that I can go back to because there are so many speculations and random inserts left unanswered. I liked Conway in the novel, even if some people thought he was boring. But I thought he was really deep and he intrigued me alot. I wish his relationship with Lo-Tsen had worked...it's one of those things that pissed me off XD
Lovely music from a lovely movie. Perhaps you'd be interested in reading the books that inspired "Lost Horizon" (if you haven't already). The author is a British born American scientist named Baird Spalding who went the Himalayas and lived amongst the people there. The 6 volume set is called "Life and Teaching of the Masters of the Far East" and can be found online.
@3investigators Wow,this is huge, thank you so much for this info, cause, though I loved the 70´s version (despite what arrogant materialists say about it) and also like this one but I´m glad the book is based on a more serious, spiritual work !
@Gwynsek You're very welcome. Please let us know your impressions of "Life and Teaching of the Masters of the Far East"! In all due respect to the novel and the movie it inspired - I think it is one of the loveliest and deepest popular works ever. It is truly expressing the wisdom of the ages.
@3investigators My eternal gratitude and Taoist prayers for you ! I have sent the link on amazon to other viewers on the 1973 version (my favorite, though I also like the 1938 one)channel and even wrote to its owner to tell him about it (of course I mentioned it was another user who just taught me about it !).You can be sure it was a spiritual guidance to led me today to look for the movie´s channels here and spot your comment, cause ,as a person seriously into inner alchemy, this is beyond words.
Yes, the novel "Lost Horizon" is by British author James Hilton. It was inspired by the memoirs of British born American Scientist Baird Spalding called "Life and Teaching of the Masters of the Far East". This 6 volume work is still in print and well worth reading.
James Hilton (I believe that is his name) does some very good books....two others you kight have read, which were turned into EXCELLENT movies are: Goodbye, Mr. Chips (film with Ronald Coleman And Greer Garson) and Random Harvest (film with Greer Garson and Robert Donat)..!
I saw a more modern version of Goodbye Mr. Chips years ago. There was also another version of Lost Horizon, which I enjoyed, I think it was in the seventies. I have never heard of Random Harvest, so thank you for the information.
You must have seen the Peter O'Toole version of Goodbye Mr. Chips...the 1939 one is the best! It has lots of atmosphere...and Random Harvest is my mum's favorite romantic movie; it is very sweet.
Wonderful film, wonderful story, wonderful music.

I thought that Lost horizon was based off of the classic book of the same name, by James Hilton?
oldmoviemusic 2 years ago
yes - the novel was a fictionalized distillation of "Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East" by Baird Spalding. Check out the books.

Thanks for letting me know! I have only ever read the book by James Hilton: I'll try and track down the Baird Spalding series you suggested.

Awesome. I think you'll find them interesting. They are considered a classic of metaphysical literature. Very deep but still very accessible!
