Didn't get into the Beach Boys until their first renaissance in the mid '70s with "Endless Summer" and "Spirit of America." I was thrilled when the "15 Big Ones" LP came out and downright excited to hear all the elements there -- classic but subtly updated -- on "It's OK," which should have been as big a hit as "California Girls" or "I Get Around."
this deserved WAY MORE commerical bang back in the 70's...just a terrific summer diddy.....
remember seeing the 15 big ones tour , '76...and this was just out and being enjoyed by all 'the real fans'......I remember the terrific show that night in Montreal, at the Forum.....***and yes should have been the biggest song of the album,,.vs Rock n roll music.....could it be , it was too short for a hit of the 70's??
This is my favorite!!!..If I were to suggest a Beach Boy Song ....like I always do to my children....Nothing captures the mystic, essence and harmonies of the "Beach Boys" like this- P.S - Proud Owner of = 15 Big Ones ...Peace
I'm french, and not really interested in the usa of today, but I must admit I would have loved to know the usa and the americans of this times (ie 50's and 60's). Your country was then really the real american dream, because of this former american way of life, mentality, and SONGS such as this one !
@dannqc I grew up during these times...and I experienced the good and the bad. Everyone (who didn't live then) thinks that this was the age of innocence. A lot of young people wished they could have lived back then, instead of today. I tell them the USA was the greatest nation on earth at the time. I also remind them that we were always on the brink of nuclear war (the Cold War) and racism and sexism were a scourge on American life, much more than it is today. Just enjoy the music!
@MrDennyman You're right indeed. It is always easy to idealize something or someone when we do not know it, or when we are far away. And especially whith such a beautiful song ! So, instead, I would say that you really had great music (great inspiration) in the 50's-70's in the usa ! Thanks :-)
It's been a relatively long time now, since this song was first penned & released on the "15 Big Ones" album .. 1976. It's stood the test of time & holds up quite nicely, in hindsight. P.S. I've been a hard-core, deep-seated BB & BW fan since way back in 1968 .. so I've heard all of the band's songs, starting in 1961 .. & by comparison, this song rates pretty well, in total career terms.
This has to be one of the most perfect summer songs ever. Right from the start it has a sound that just makes you wanna move, and Mike's delivery with the lyrics is just awesome. "One for all, all for one, all for all have fun" is my new motto and words that I live by. I love the Beach Boys, thank you Brian for this wonderful song that optimizes the "sum sum summertime."
In the BBs 'Good Vibrations Tour' DVD, they sing this song. There is a shot midway through the song, where Brian turns to look at Dennis, they're both chewing gum. Dennis holds Brian's gaze, and cheekily casts his eyes towards Mike, who is mincing about the stage. It was only meant for Brian to see. It's so funny. When I watch it, I keep winding it back to see this 'look' again. Dennis was priceless!
Mike's bass line, for example, at around :23, :27, and :31 (repeated in this way throughout the song in different sections) is pretty well the same as The Girl from New York City.
Go to a site called imeem they have this and more songs that were kicked out of youtube songs that were never in youtube and whole albums like ars nova .
@BB45s What about "Rock'n'Roll Music"? "Getcha Back" - Carl and Brian were on that. Brian was not on the BBs biggest hit "Kokomo," but was on "Still Cruisin'".
@forshorn ... IMHO, Getcha Back was a shadow of Do It Again and Rock & Roll Music, though a top ten hit, was a cover of a Chuck Berry tune. Maybe "last great BB single" according to me (my personal taste)
