If you have a Swiss Army Knife, it probably has a file. You can strike your matches on that. (Unfortunately, it will smell like sulfur until you wash it off)
Mastery of fire... so much harder than one would think... I always laugh when people think they can start a good fire by rubbing two sticks together... such a result requires a lifetime of skill.
I used to have a small waterproof plastic box with sandpaper on the outside to hold my waterproof matches.
It's good the way you teach your kids such a wealth of information.
Yeah, sure, plenty of people will say that building a fire, or planting watermelons is not necessary nowadays, but besides the instruction, you learn a lot about yourself and the world and your response to it all.
That is very true because most people think now that we don't need to know how to start a fire because we have gas fire places that start automatically and we can buy all the food we need in the grocerie store but it is still necessary.
To answer to my own question (from findarticles(dot)com)
Question: We're told not to sleep in a room with plants in it. Does this mean that it is unhealthy to sleep in a forest?
Answer:
The first advice may be right. During the day plants photosynthesise, releasing oxygen as a byproduct. They also respire - using oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide - so some of the oxygen produced by photosynthesis in the daytime is diverted to respiration.
)At night, though, plants only respire, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Therefore flowers and other plants should be removed from hospital wards at night, as sick people should not have to compete for oxygen with plants.
In a forest at night, plant respiration may marginally lower the available oxygen level. To most people, though, the difference would not be noticeable, and so poses no health risk.
So, my conclusion, it depends of how many trees are etc
the awnser is simple plants produce only a marginal ammount of oxygen versus consumed
trees on the other hand produce loads of oxygen & use verry litle oxygen also the canope of trees is much higer so oxygen stays close to the ground wile Co2 goes up thus there is no Co2 or barely noticable Co2 at ground level in forests
When I was a kid I started super gluing a piece of fine grit sandpaper to the top, or side of my homemade match cases..It makes a great striking surface for strike anywheres and even most regular matches!
You can also strike those matches on your front two teeth. I can do it and I'm only 14 so your son should be able to do it also. It does take a while to learn tho.
Good tip on the matches, also strike anywhere matches should work on ALL rocks sicne the surface seems to be good for them...Again, nice to see some fun family time with the kids...
She doesn't give up she is a true survivor. Hammocks are the way to go comfortable fast to set and can be used as chair or bed. Dryer lint is incredible that stuff lights instantly I have been saving all the lint in a Pringles can. Great video hurricane season coming soon hope we get through as good as last year.Lint in a Coffe filter tied with a small copper wire dipped in melted wax. I did it assembly line way knocked out a 2 lb coffecan full fast.Lights easy just touch match poof tallflame!
You have a nice photo facing a Meadow in the beggining of your videos (first photo); I am wondering why didn't you choose a Meadow for camping instead of the woods?
It is known that its not healthy to sleep in a forest because at night there is lots of CO2 there (well, maybe not in this particular time of the year, when there is not enough greenery, leaves, to create much CO2).
greenery doesnt produce co2..... greenery produces oxygen which we need then we breath out co2 which the greenery needs to breath the produce the oxygen that we breath. i think maybe u got it backwords
Bic lighter all the way have one on me almost everywhere I go except when I haul pure oxygen then I want to stay away from any sparks due to oxygen saturation. Best way to flame up is coffee filter stuffed with dryerlint tied with wire dipped in wax tall flame instantly lightweight too.
it looks pretty fun
