How does he know it makes a lot of RPM's the damn gauge cluster doesn't even work. And why the fuck would you go from turbo(4 banger I'm assuming) to 6 cylinder ITB's? Less efficient...
I'm quite interested in how he mated the KL fwd bellhousing to the miata box. They mentioned using an RX-7 bellhousing and flywheel, but the bellhousing is traditionally part of the block?
Either way, mad props for an infinitely cool project. I hope it claims some scalps!
You have inspired me, Im in search of a miata at the moment and you reminded me of back in the day of how i use to own a mazda 626 lx v6. I love the that v6 motor. It was nothing to me but a beater but i loved the torque and throttle response from that motor and it was practically indestructable. Im amazed as to how you mated it to an rx7 bellhousing. Was that a direct fit? or was there some custom brackets or plates needed? by the way, great work, keep it up.
@TheNineveh You're going to face way more than bellhousing issues. The SHO V6 is enormous and fitting it into a Miata would be nearly impossible and render the car unpleasant to drive.
@TheNineveh The V6 in the SHO is considerably taller than the average 302. Plus, it's probably heavier. It's a really big gob of iron and you can't stick it just anywhere.
@TheNineveh You know, I just went back and read this and I realized you mean the new turbo V6. I don't know anything about that engine, but with all the turbo piping on it, fitting it in a Miata would still be rough. I'll bet they're ridiculously expensive anyway.
I would love to do a mazda b2200 pickup for drifting with one of these swapped in. 6spd stick tranny, running propane with the compression bumped way up to 11.5:1, cams meant for 8500rpm, and a quick-coupler to hook a BBQ up to the propane tank for making lunches at the track :D
sounds great, but other than that, why take out the turbo 4? an average turbo miata puts about 200-250hp to the ground. this is a lot of work for a big decrease power. kinda silly, IMO.
@YourMother88 The v6 has more tractable power for autocross. The turbo 4 would only make more power after spooling up (which is not likely to happen in autocross tracks).
@romanval69 True, N/A power is a little easier to control, but if you mean a turbo miata would suffer from turbo lag, that's not quite true. a small turbo would produce a ton of torque from low rpm (i'm talking LOW, like 2.,500RPM) and really help the car get out of tight, low-speed corners. That tiny V-6 probably needs a lot more RPM to 'spool up' than a turbo car. ;)
180hp + 2000lb car = gunning for vettes, id be surprised if it even weighed that much, but in all seriousness, i like the tires, sound like glue....throwing rocks all over the place, i thought my drag radials on my mach were bad about that, his are silly
Gunning for Vettes, keep dreaming. But he's right about 2.5 liter that was in the MX-6 and 626. I had a '93 MX-6 LS and stock hp was 160, so 20hp more isn't worth the investment!!! But stock with only a custom exhaust system (non-headers) I could do 135mph and the same enging is found in the Ford Probe GT, wasn't proud to say that, lol.
@Tino6988 1st of all, you need to watch who the fuck, you're talking to. Secondly, like I said the first fucking time, "I had a '93 MX-6 LS and stock hp was 160, so 20hp more isn't worth the investment!!!"
@DVL32 Its more than 20hp. You had an MX6-LS with 164 hp, A healthy KLDE will only dyno 130-135whp. Thats 50hp gain. Id put money on it that his tune is very conservative. If he added cams and tuned it well, theres a KL ITB 323 doing 253whp and running 11.2 in the quarter N/A
There's a difference between 180 hp measured at the rear wheels and 180 hp in the advertising. Horsepower is nice, but usable torque can be more important- especially in autocrossing. Sounds like a well thought out and executed project, one that isn't finished yet.

Yes obviously its a v6, if you idiots would read past comments you wouldn't tell me things I already know, hardly anyone on here could tell me something I don't already know.
hell u coulda just stuck with a klze motor and turbod it and made a shit load more hp then that , seeing how its a project of urs then a klze wouldnt of been out of the question and alot more faster
@xbartosx Most "reasonable" turbo setups on a Miata will hit full boost (on a car that makes the max for stock 1.6 or 1.8 block can take, so between 200-250whp) between 3 and 4k, if you're lugging below that on an autox course there's probably something wrong with your driving. I can understand the plus in having predictable NA power though.
I can appreciate his work and uniqueness, but my stock H22A with a skunk intake manifold and DC headers dynoed 185hp to the wheels and just over 150tq from a 2,2L 4Cyl...
Wow... There are a lot of haters on here... Out of all of the shit talkers, how many of you actually autocrossed or even DRIVEN a miata? These cars are excellent autocross machines and have made many Corvette owners feel simple for buying such a gaudy, "look at me" car. Add to the fact that it has a 180hp V6? Yes, he IS gunning for Vettes on the autocross course and will make a lot of people look bad.. I think this out-of-the-ordinary swap is awesome and applaud the work done.
180whp is a big deal in the miata. i bet she autoxs like a fucking dream. have fun trying to autocross your megatrim turbos and getting rocked by damn near stock cars in the circuit.
definitely would of rather stuck with the turbo. thats the same shitty v6 found in the probe gt. the turbo4 that was in the probe gt before they went v6 was way better. and lighter im sure. turbo over displacement anyday.
@devilselbow +1 they also dont understand torque. BTW a 180whp miata can pull around 4second 0-60 times for anyone who thinks 180hp is not alot. And that would be on the stock engine, if it's unclear.
@JD0x0 jeez, its not that its not enough, i just figured it would've been cheaper to boost. u guys got me all wrong, it was not meant to be a negative comment, i also love this project
180hp at the wheels is a tremendous amount of power for such a little car. I also own a first gen miata and they come stock with about 95hp to the wheels, 110 at the crank, what the mustang and the lexus guy dont realize is that they need to produce much more power to get as good a power to weight ratio as that v6 miata and it would take incredible time and money to make it handle as well as any miata:)
umm 180 to the wheels isnt really anything to brag about..........my stock FD puts 221 to wheels without any mods, you should of bought rx7 or did the 5.0 swap for ur miata.
What a nice project! Very nice with the ITB's. People that comment so negatively need to build more and talk less. 180whp in a Miata is roughly 220 crank. All that in a car that had 140 crankshaft hp stock. The exhaust is not rattling as far as I can tell...those are little stones bouncing off the bottom of the car. There is no sound deadening paper inside or tar outside I'll bet.
Can't wait till you add some high comp pistons and some cams. It already sounds lovely!
all that work done to it, and its only putting out 180HP to the ground.. what a bad way to spend 10grand.. i got a 94 mazda mx3 with the klze 200HP off the line.. with everything ive got done right now, its pushing around 270-280. So i doubt that lil mx5 will come close to corvette.... not double clutching like you should either ha ha

I got one question............Why? Spent 1000's of dollars to get less than 200hp to the wheels and somewhere near 200fptorque. Dude your just ate up. Gunning for vettes....................... you can't be serious. Maybe one that's about 10 or 15 years old. Just buy a used vette. EPIC FAIL!!!! By the way I own a 2008 IS350 and just loving embarrassing mazduuuuuh owner's anytime one of them is stupid enough to gun for me. Got to admit one thing though...your title intrigued me.
@Vandekamps01 or swap the engine for a turbo'd busa engine...i've seen those make either 500 horsepower, they sound MEAN, and are prob way lighter than even the stock 4 banger in an MX-5...would have been mean and original, prob less work even hookin a transmission up to one. Anyway, if you didn't wanna get that crazy, shoulda swapped a 5.0 Stang engine into it with some heads and cams. would have smoked light itself.
@puppykicker54 hyabusa motors are crap and have no torque. lots of guys use a 5.0 ford v8's but that creates a severe weight ballance issue for autocross, they work great for drag cars but suck for handling. and how the hell would hookin a busa motor to a mx5 tranny be easy, its a motorcycle with the trans intagral to the motor case, if you watched the vid, all he had to do was use a rx7 bellhouse, not exactly complicated. and stick your screen name up your ass those who abuse animals should die
@pumpkinheadedsob whoa dude chill..busa engines i'm guessing could be hooked up to a t56 6 speed with the proper adaptor plate. Hell if you can make two busa engines into a v8 (see Hartley v8) then i'm sure youcould hook it up to a transmission. 2nd, yes, they have poor torque ratings, hence my suggestion of turbocharging, ya, you might make a couple hundred less lb-ft of torque than horsepower but that would still be about 300 lbft, much more than that v6 is making .3rd wil b in the nxt comment
@pumpkinheadedsob 3rd, yes the 5.0 is heavy, however it could be lighter than the stock 4 banger. I'm not sure about that but i know that an ls1 is lighter than the stock ka24 found in a nissan 240sx. If you do that swap with the 6 speend transmission, then you lose 128 lbs. Fourth, the screenname was made years ago when i was about 13 years old as a joke to freak people out/make my friends laugh. If you are offended at that then I am sorry for that, but seriously...it's an sn, i don't kick pups
@puppykicker54 so please just calm down, i'm just trying to make a few simple points about automotive solutions that could solve the problems of underpowered/undercapable engines with poor/expensive aftermarkets in comparison to more practical platforms. The busa engines for example are remakarkable. see Radical SR series cars, they are astonishing, as are Busa powered Mini coopers. Once again sorry if I offended you, it was just an sn.
@puppykicker54 geesh...........just another mazduuuuh owner that thinks Mazuuduhhhhh engineers make great performance cars..........LOL! I would love to smoke any stock Miata or Rx8 that's willing to go to the track with me. Power and performance with luxury is standard in my beautiful Graphite 2008 IS350 with sport pkg.................bitch! I got 2 more words 4ya..............SUCK IT. LMFAO
@Vandekamps01 listen you little asshole, i used to drive a 2005 Mustang GT 5 speed with mods, that would have WRECKED your is350 bitch-wagon. So watch it, I've never owned a Mazda and I don't know how they perform b.c i've never driven them either, so why don't you "SUCK IT" you little bitch.
@puppykicker54 ...................LOL. used to own because you lost it one night racing some bitch in a lexus that was faster than you......God I would hope a V8 could beat a stock V6 but it probably could'nt. Ford owner who know owns a shitty little mazda and is jealous of my bitch car that he could never afford new. Denial is so wide spread in Mazzzzduh owner's. Suck it! Hah ha. I'm still listening.
@Vandekamps01 lol your stupidity still does not cease to amaze me. I clearly said I have never owned a Mazda. I DO NOT HAVE ONE. And no actually it was wrecked while i was stopped at a red light and some moron in a vw smashed into me and totalled both of our cars. And for your information, my Stang WOULD have smoked your car. I smoked motorcycles, a Viper, a highly modded Nismo 350Z (V6) and everything else I raced except for Bentleys. You wanna talk 6's, talk to the porsche gt3 I took down too
@Vandekamps01 put your is350 up against a miata on a track, autocross isnt about brute force and power, its about handeling. and there are few factory cars out there that can keep up with a miata on a tight road course, and absolutly none that can do it at the same price. so have fun street racing the kids and try to grow up a little, this man did a very clean job of modifing his car. I think your just jealous because you barly know how to pump your own gas, let alone do a modification like that
Reason #1. It's unique. You and the other thousands of IS350 owners can at least agree on the fact that a v6 miata is something rarely seen.
Reason #2. Power to weight and it's relationship to handling. If you actually know anything about how an automobile works or have any understanding of physics this should be self explanatory. If not pick up a book.
Reason #3 Reliability. 180Hp is good, low maintenance, solid power.
whats the torque numbers? I dont know if I'd personally be happy with 180 hp but then again, stock internals and stock cams so who knows? Good looking car none the less
A lot of people here don't realize the difference between a 4-cyl turbo and an NA v6 when it comes to auto crossing. Do your reading before you criticize this man.
@willister54 one nice thing about being na is no turbo lag. i was running better times in my stock rx8 then a modded rx7 turbo. he was having trouble getting into boost cause of how tight the course was. so just depends on what you prefer and i feel the v6 gives you more to work with.
@sklyrovka clearly you havent raced autocross before. you dont always get the lugger y of shifting 9 billion times on a course cause of the amount of turns. a lot of times you need to stay in a higher gear cause it will actually make you run a course quicker and having the lowed grunt of an na v6 helps in that area.
@Callumf The goal for this project was most likely linear power response across the rev range. Therefore, a naturally aspirated V6 is a wise choice. Also, it's only a 2.5L, not very big.
Nice swap! Greater the idea than to put a 8cyl in it. Nice video too...but not a fan of the esthetic (excepted for the front bumper and the oem parts).
I don't under stand why Mazda never got around to using the KL motors in Miatas, the sound they make is amazing! I am planing on putting a KLZE in to my 71' Opel GT, and I am shooting for 220 or so. Great build, I love it.
That looks like a pretty ideal combo for such a light car. A good rev-happy engine with such good, docile drivability characteristics must make the car easy to control. People often focus too much on HP and sacrifice control and stability to gain speed in the straights.
.
This car must be a killer on technical circuits. Good job.
Sometimes its not really about how much hp you make, using a mazda v6 with custom itb's that came off of a motorcycle is pretty awesome!! The 4cyl under boost probably would have made more power, but is no where near as cool as this v6 setup.
@Membrane556 and the 26b is a 4 rotor that'll make 750hp+ naturally aspirated. 2.6L. Im waiting for the new 1.8l aluminum rotary that'll be in the RX9
watch his tacho and speedo not working lol shit 180 and has high revs funny my stock for ed falcon has more power and looks like it gos harder to get a real car or tune it beter
of all the swaps for miatas that one looks the best to me.
that thing must be a blast to drive. I would love to take a ford 3.0L duratec and swap it into a miata with all the necessary equipment to take it to a CA BAR location to have it legally and officially swapped.

Everyone saying 180hp isn't that much doesn't really "get" miatas. Very cool car.
devilselbow 1 year ago 33
@devilselbow +1 they also dont understand torque. BTW a 180whp miata can pull around 4second 0-60 times for anyone who thinks 180hp is not alot. And that would be on the stock engine, if it's unclear.
JD0x0 11 months ago
@JD0x0 jeez, its not that its not enough, i just figured it would've been cheaper to boost. u guys got me all wrong, it was not meant to be a negative comment, i also love this project

180hp at the wheels is a tremendous amount of power for such a little car. I also own a first gen miata and they come stock with about 95hp to the wheels, 110 at the crank, what the mustang and the lexus guy dont realize is that they need to produce much more power to get as good a power to weight ratio as that v6 miata and it would take incredible time and money to make it handle as well as any miata:)
sampatton90 1 year ago
power to weight ratio ftw !
rscossies2 1 year ago 10
umm 180 to the wheels isnt really anything to brag about..........my stock FD puts 221 to wheels without any mods, you should of bought rx7 or did the 5.0 swap for ur miata.
bontis101 1 year ago
@bontis101 thumbs down for ford do the LS1 swap its alot better more hp more torque and less weight
xXxchipperchopperxXx 1 year ago
What a nice project! Very nice with the ITB's. People that comment so negatively need to build more and talk less. 180whp in a Miata is roughly 220 crank. All that in a car that had 140 crankshaft hp stock. The exhaust is not rattling as far as I can tell...those are little stones bouncing off the bottom of the car. There is no sound deadening paper inside or tar outside I'll bet.
Can't wait till you add some high comp pistons and some cams. It already sounds lovely!

Vandekamps01 1 year ago
@Vandekamps01 or swap the engine for a turbo'd busa engine...i've seen those make either 500 horsepower, they sound MEAN, and are prob way lighter than even the stock 4 banger in an MX-5...would have been mean and original, prob less work even hookin a transmission up to one. Anyway, if you didn't wanna get that crazy, shoulda swapped a 5.0 Stang engine into it with some heads and cams. would have smoked light itself.
puppykicker54 1 year ago
@puppykicker54 hyabusa motors are crap and have no torque. lots of guys use a 5.0 ford v8's but that creates a severe weight ballance issue for autocross, they work great for drag cars but suck for handling. and how the hell would hookin a busa motor to a mx5 tranny be easy, its a motorcycle with the trans intagral to the motor case, if you watched the vid, all he had to do was use a rx7 bellhouse, not exactly complicated. and stick your screen name up your ass those who abuse animals should die
pumpkinheadedsob 1 year ago
@pumpkinheadedsob whoa dude chill..busa engines i'm guessing could be hooked up to a t56 6 speed with the proper adaptor plate. Hell if you can make two busa engines into a v8 (see Hartley v8) then i'm sure youcould hook it up to a transmission. 2nd, yes, they have poor torque ratings, hence my suggestion of turbocharging, ya, you might make a couple hundred less lb-ft of torque than horsepower but that would still be about 300 lbft, much more than that v6 is making .3rd wil b in the nxt comment
puppykicker54 1 year ago

puppykicker54 1 year ago
@pumpkinheadedsob 3rd, yes the 5.0 is heavy, however it could be lighter than the stock 4 banger. I'm not sure about that but i know that an ls1 is lighter than the stock ka24 found in a nissan 240sx. If you do that swap with the 6 speend transmission, then you lose 128 lbs. Fourth, the screenname was made years ago when i was about 13 years old as a joke to freak people out/make my friends laugh. If you are offended at that then I am sorry for that, but seriously...it's an sn, i don't kick pups
puppykicker54 1 year ago
@puppykicker54 so please just calm down, i'm just trying to make a few simple points about automotive solutions that could solve the problems of underpowered/undercapable engines with poor/expensive aftermarkets in comparison to more practical platforms. The busa engines for example are remakarkable. see Radical SR series cars, they are astonishing, as are Busa powered Mini coopers. Once again sorry if I offended you, it was just an sn.

Vandekamps01 1 year ago
@Vandekamps01 listen you little asshole, i used to drive a 2005 Mustang GT 5 speed with mods, that would have WRECKED your is350 bitch-wagon. So watch it, I've never owned a Mazda and I don't know how they perform b.c i've never driven them either, so why don't you "SUCK IT" you little bitch.
puppykicker54 1 year ago
@puppykicker54 ...................LOL. used to own because you lost it one night racing some bitch in a lexus that was faster than you......God I would hope a V8 could beat a stock V6 but it probably could'nt. And for your information, my Stang WOULD have smoked your car. xXxchipperchopperxXx 1 year ago
I think your just jealous because you barly know how to pump your own gas, let alone do a modification like that
pumpkinheadedsob 1 year ago
@Vandekamps01
Tekerene338 1 year ago
whats the torque numbers? I dont know if I'd personally be happy with 180 hp but then again, stock internals and stock cams so who knows? Good looking car none the less

@willister54 remember it's 180whp not engine hp.. that it will prolly be more like 240+ / - hp at the crank..
trinicaleb 1 year ago
@willister54 it's exclusively an autox car and he probably wants to be top of his class which is up to 3.0L so he put the V6 in.
TechThem22 1 year ago
@willister54 one nice thing about being na is no turbo lag. i was running better times in my stock rx8 then a modded rx7 turbo. he was having trouble getting into boost cause of how tight the course was. so just depends on what you prefer and i feel the v6 gives you more to work with.
xbartosx 11 months ago
@xbartosx Or you know, you could just stay in the power band where there is no lag.
sklyrovka 11 months ago
@sklyrovka clearly you havent raced autocross before. you dont always get the lugger y of shifting 9 billion times on a course cause of the amount of turns. a lot of times you need to stay in a higher gear cause it will actually make you run a course quicker and having the lowed grunt of an na v6 helps in that area.

@Callumf The goal for this project was most likely linear power response across the rev range. Therefore, a naturally aspirated V6 is a wise choice. Also, it's only a 2.5L, not very big.

willcraigle 1 year ago
That looks like a pretty ideal combo for such a light car. A good rev-happy engine with such good, docile drivability characteristics must make the car easy to control. People often focus too much on HP and sacrifice control and stability to gain speed in the straights.
.
This car must be a killer on technical circuits. Good job.
originaldriver 1 year ago
Sometimes its not really about how much hp you make, using a mazda v6 with custom itb's that came off of a motorcycle is pretty awesome!! The 4cyl under boost probably would have made more power, but is no where near as cool as this v6 setup.
