There is one thing i dont understand, they want to burn this thing, but then put it out 3secs after it burns, i would have let it burn for a bit longer after seeing what it was doing
They let it burn for 8 seconds before putting it out. Even if I set my steaks on fire for that long not all of them would be cooked much less something as large as that.
the 80's horror industry rocks!!! nowadays people are lazy with CGI that looks totally fake. Hard to get psyched out thinking "hey this could be real" when its not even concrete.
@Mega554321 yes it was the dog that as walking around but it was infected from the start, so it was technically it was dead already. that dog was the one that the Norwegians were trying to kill in the beginning, because they knew what the dog was capable of doing.
@Mega554321 i really didnt know if the new thing movie is a prequel, i thought it was a remake, if it is then your right, we would already know how the movie ends lol
@janellejulianajoy Probably petrified with fear, you see this morbidly disgusting creature that you would never think possible suddenly mutating in front of you, he was probably also curious as well to see what the hell it was going to do. When it came for him, survival kicked in and told him to torch the son of a bitch!
You know, the sound track to this is just awful. The sound effects for "30 Days of Night: Burrows, AL does far better. Too many swooping violins here. It isn't "Gone with the Wind", after all.
A) 06:24 - Looks like a ZZ Top album cover, and B) I remember this all way from when I saw this in college on the big screen in '82, at the 0:54 mark when Chiles is hesistant to "torch" the thing, Carpenter adds the sound effect of what appears to be a fairly close-range jet taking off under the visual effect of the round-thing-encircled-with-fangs-erupting-from-the-thing's-neck-and-aimed-at-da-boys as it moves straight toward Chiles. Notice how quiet it sounds after he burns it. Brilliant.
@xShadowxPhoenix Too right! especially considering that he was wearing those flimsy, short ill-fitting surgical gloves whilst he stuck his arms up to the elbows into the creature`s body cavity
@kntshrm Well that is true, but you're missing the obvious, he demonstrates using the eraser end of his pencil and touches the creature carcass, then as he talks and ponders, he taps the pencil, eraser end to his mouth. I'd say that could be the most likely point at which he became infected.
@DavidArethusa But why would Blaire be so careless as to touch the carcass with an eraser tip and then put it in his mouth? Most doctors would never do that with an ordinary human corpse, let alone an alien one. Most people assume that Palmer got to Blaire at some point when Blaire was locked in the toolshed, sometime before or after Fuchs was killed.
@xShadowxPhoenix - I wondered that when he touched the end of the pencil eraser against the corpse, then inadvertantly touched his bottom lip...probably then. Doesnt take much.
@skeletonmom I don't think it worked like that. I think the creature must assimilate you, eg absorb you into itself, then it can create a copy of you. I think all the assimilated creatures are part of the one thing, sort of like the main creature is the King and the others are it's pawns.
That is why I don't think it works like that. Carpenter didn't show everything for this reason, I believe, so we wonder how it lives and assimilates other life forms.
I gotta agree with the special effects comments. IMO, today's technology doesn't really compare to how well this was done. i once preferred this over Aliens, although i do like both. but still, seeing how this movie was done, I dont think the prequel (or remake, Universal wont decide) could possibly live up to this one, cuz its a masterpiece, and any CGI for the upcoming one would probably just ruin it. too soon to tell, but its my opinion.
Doesn't the discovery of the derelict space-craft remind any1 when the Nostromo crew discovered the alien/xenomorph derelict space ship at the LV-426 moon?
DUDE... America targets everyone in every movie. Russians/Soviet Unions, Germans, Japanenese, North Koreans, here the Norweigiens, now I believe that Middle East are the bad guys.
@barthashimi7 I never ment it like that, I'm saying that America makes everyone the bad guy, for instance Russians/Soviet Unitons, Germans, Japanese, North Koreans, in this movie the Norweigiens, and currently the Middle East is the so called "bad guy" they are fighting off in this war of "terror". They don't care how many civilians they kill or how many men, woman and children die in war, there always has to be a bad guy.
@slksrkhrr Not trying to pick a fight, I wanna be civil, but...everyone does that. Every country likes to portray everyone else as the bad guy, since the audience they're catering to would not be too keen on seeing themselves as the villains of the story.
It just so happens that US films are for the most part available overseas and everyone likes to see those, apparently forgetting that they were made originally and specifically for an American audience.
@slksrkhrr Oh, and in this film, the Norwegians aren't portrayed as bad guys. Merely victims just like the Americans. Innocent, unaware of the danger posed by the alien. They're not villains here at all.
to america "norwegians" must seem pretty "exotic" --- anyway the norwegians built cities and longships many many centuries before the first white ass has dropped his dung into north america´s soil )) just don´t forget about that, americaninos
@MoveOverCasanova Well, my Irish ancestors were so advanced they were going to turn themselves into pure energy before they invented whisky, at least according to Family Guy, so there : )
@MoveOverCasanova Yeah, but what really gets me is why, in modern times, the norwegians decided to handle this on their own and not call Uncle Sam for help...at least ask America for permission before planting those dynamites
To everyone commenting on the special effects, you're right. They are very good. In fact they were a head of their time for 1982. Rather simple how it was done but I agree, CGI has nothing on good animatronics and a little camera work!
why is it these guys think of using fire to root out the thing but the nords dont -_-
