Nirvana is one of the those bands who don't lose themselves to the peer pressure that the commercial world gives them. They opted out of making another commercially sounding album after "Nevermind." When the more Grungy "In Utero" came out, everyone was like "HOLY SHIT, THIS SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE NEVERMIND. BUT THEY'RE COOL, AND THIS SOUNDS OKAY, SO I LIKE IT!" and in about a few weeks, the album went #1; seems like for some people escaping the mainstream is impossible once you enter it.

Nevermind was extremely commercial, Nirvana went from being an underground late 80s punk band to..."Nevermind." Even if they didn't want to be, they didn't have much of a choice. You can't go from selling millions and playing world tours back to the punk underground.
