Wow. Nice to see a group of straight men not be homophobic douches for once. I'm happy for this man to have this experience to share so that it could stand as an example to our society.
On the other hand...let's go up to all straight people and say:
"HEY! You straight?"
If they say yes, let's say: "Cool....I accept you!"
I mean, what's supposed to make STRAIGHT so natural? If people are raised to be straight & weren't given other options, are they truly straight? Come on now... think about it.
Good for you!!! Most people aren't like the extreme homopobes in this country. They are like cancer that doesn't go away but kills you and they are dying off. YOU ARE MY HERO!!
haha so i looked up gay football players outta curiosity...found this guy...read up about him...turns out he benched 225 for 37, 500 lbs for 1 (holding PA state record) and was described as a man's man...he was captain of a DII football team, so there's obv truth to that...
BUT after listening to his interview...i can definitely see it lol...he's got some femininity in his voice...it's just funny and odd watching this bc i played college ball myself and remember the overt manliness lol
Is being gay still a massive hang up in America? Really not as big an issue here in the Uk anymore. Not like it was 20 years ago. It is a lot more accepting.
@Silverbirch4444 of course now the issue in england is being muslim or having the dna of a muslim country / i am originally from the middle east and gay and living in england and this is so fucking easier to be gay than from the middle east
@Silverbirch4444 no that7s not what i meant, i mean that if people think this is hard to be gay than they you try to survive coming from the middle east. i had to option in my life live in lebanon and no one would accept me being gay or live in england and no one would accept me being from lebanon, i moved on, 30 000 km aways actually and i have a happy life here in japan where people do not judge you on your origin or sexual orientation. so fuck off the UK and fuck off the middle east same shit
cool my mom and dad are trying to make me play football but I don't want to I am not really into the sport I hate the sport plus the kids who play on the team are total jerkoffs and I truly don't wanna play
@Arcanetheory7 tell your parents how you really feel about it. It sounds like you should look around and find a different sport, one that you will like and at which you will be motivated to excel.
Wonderful story! I find it suspicious that I've never seen Brian's story in the American mass media, I guess his not being a stereotype of a femmy gay guy scares the Conservatives who choose the news stories that we see. YOU ROCK BRIAN SIMS!
@iyotiduot Huh? His voice is so attractive, it's very masculine but has a kindness to it that makes him seem very friendly and approachable. I think he's perfect all round, any guy dating him should consider himself very, very lucky!

Personally, I never "come out" I just BE and let people fall into place who truly love me and let those who never cared just fall away. If they ask me, I'll ask "yes I am gay" but other than that, there's nothing different about the way I present myself.

Some people are very fortunate that they live in a tight-knit social setting that protects them from the hostility, negativity and blatant hatred that so many of us encounter at various times in our lives. For every gay man who has had a positive coming out experience, there are still dozens who go through the opposite. Also, how you look has much to do with it. Masculin, goodlooking men tend to have it easier than those that do not fit that mold.
@bannol Agree completely! It does help immeasurably that he is a football jock. But do his teammates not deserve credit as well, for rising to the occasion? I think this story is still inspirational, even though it is not typical or even the usual. I am happy for him and that he had the good luck of being in a place with good people....probably because he is a nice guy whom everyone likes.
@xxtheshizxx I hear u... I came out to my mom, and she was ok about it. She said she would tell my dad. When she talked to me after, I was so depressed, because I realized my dad could never truely exept me.... She told me he said that he would pretend I am straight, I was not aloud to bring anyone home, and there would be NO PDA. Unfortunately he feels the same today, but I know that if he isn't ok with it, others are. And I do not need to surround myself with that, because I deserve better <3
this gets me teary... like i came out to my straight guy friends but most of them will say they're fine but they're really not.. cuz i can tell there's a distance and awkwardness, but i guess its not my fault.. if we were friends they'll except you for who you are right... :)
This story is so great and so inspirational! It gives me a lump in my throat and brings tears to my eyes to know that there are gay people who have true friends that support them in their coming out process...it also reminds me to offer up thanks for my friends...and to say a prayer for GLBT people that do not.
It's amazing how we remember the SMALLEST detail about something so significant about our lives. Just as he's telling the story and he says little things...I do that too...:-)
this story is even more meaningful for me... i left HS hockey cuz of all the gay bashing (not directed at me) even from the coach. that was in the 70's... nice to know theres a light at the end of the tunnel
i really love this video. I'm14, but i noticed that there are evidents that i could be, if not am, gay. I'm highly considering NOT coming out. It's too risky. I could be made fun of, hated, ingored, threaten, or worse. I'm happy for this guy. He's really lucky to have caring friends. Of course, the real test is coming out to family. For me, it's just too risky. I don't think i'll ever come out, or even express my sexuality.
@jonathan0012345 Hey buddy, don't worry about coming out to your family until you know you're ready. It's a big step! You'll know when it's time. If you realize that you are definitely gay (or bi or trans), try telling a good friend, again when you're ready. Find some friends online that you can trust and chat with them. It's a process and shouldn't be rushed. Good luck and remember that there's a lot to look forward to after coming out! :)
@ImFromDriftwood thanks for your advice! It's really useful. I just have some questions. First of all, how exactly will I know the right time to come out? And who can you talk to if you don't have a friend? I don't really have a "good" friend, or at least one who I can really trust. Thanks for taking your time to help me out.
@ImFromDriftwood like what? (I am becoming more comfortable with myself now and this is all new to me; accepting who i am socially) I want to know what there is to look forward to in your opinion once I take this leap. Thanks!
@jonathan0012345 he's right...never come out till your ready. watch as many of the coming out vids as you can. you will eventually figure out whats best for your situation. Never be afraid / ashamed of it, if your gay. it's perfectly natural. too many guys live a sad life by denying it, or thinking they can change.
@jonathan0012345 That is EXACTLY how I felt at your age and two years later (still in high school) I am in the process of coming out. The TV show Queer as Folk really helped me do it.
@jonathan0012345 I once thought like you did - but I found friends, gay friends and also straight friends who accept me the way I am. Of course there are people who are homophobic, but don't do them a favor by not living your life. It's a lot better to live your life to the fullest than live in fear. But I would definitely advise against coming out at the age of 14 if there's a real danger your friends would abandon or bully you and your parents would throw you out the house. Take your time. :)
@jonathan0012345 It's okay to be scared. As ImFromDriftwood said it's best to come out to a close friend first, and only when you are ready. Coming out now is never easy and can be very scary. I told my best friend before anyone else. Two years after telling him and other friends they encouraged me to tell my parents. It's a hard decision and one that should not be taken lightly. Good luck, I know I'm a few months late, but I hope I can give you encouragement you can use.
@jonathan0012345 You will b surprised mate. It took me till I was 20 to come out to my family. I found it easier to talk to my friends about it first.. made me more comfortable about it. U just have to wait till your ready buddy.
@jonathan0012345 three years ago i used to think like that.. that i WILL NEVER come out, but after watching videos like this, celebrities supporting the gay community, it has help me a lot!!,to be confrotable with my sexuality, i still havent come out, but now i know that i will do it ...very soon...!!!
@jonathan0012345 I'm passing through the same things you're passing. I'm 15 and I told my parents that I am gay. They were really surprised. My dad didn't want to talk to me and my mom won't accept me. I live only with my dad and my step-mom, right now. I have a brother and other relatives that know that I'm gay that support me. Being gay is hard sometimes, but it's also rewarding. I just want you to tell you to come out when you think it's safe.
@jonathan0012345 Also remember that some people won't accept you right away, and not everyone is acceptin. People need time to understand and adjust. I know my dad will get over my homosexuality at some point, for I can't change it and this is who I really am. Remember that God loves us all. If there is a member in your family who you really trust, then start with that person and little by little you'll come to a point to feel happy with who you are and the people around you. Good luck :)
• "Although almost all child molesters are male less than 3 percent of men are homosexual yet about a third of all child sex abuse cases involve homosexual men molesting boys -- and in one study, 86% of molesters were homosexual or bisexual," CNSNews.com October 03, 2006
@jonathan0012345 Your sexual preference is your own business. I believe that you don't even have to tell your parents. But, if you're going that route, femininity will do the outing for you.
Man this guy makes it easier then it seems, the day I come out is the day my famz and friends disown me. In the Pacific culture it's a disgrace to be gay, so hate me If I don't come out it's a guilt I'll have for the rest of my life
@FOBBOY86 straight people disown you and gay people say that you are lying to yourself ! ......... i think you shouldn't feel guilty about anything its your life do what you like.
I had come out to myself when I was 19. Within a year after that I joined the Royal Garde.
I was not "open", but I wasn't really hiding it either. It took me four years to find out that throughout my service all the guys knew I was gay. Nobody said anything, though. I learned that they had been talking about it a lot, while I was out of the military place. They just treated me as usual and gave me peace.
That more than I can say about the teachers and psycologist I ran over later in life.
@KoldingDenmark american psychological association declined homosexuality to be a psychological illness in 1970s since it is so widespread no psychologist in his right mind would try to "cure" homosexuality.
@skunktheshrink My psychology teacher didn't try to cure me, he was just so full of Freud with all his "dominating mother - distant father" ideas, that I blew him away when I pointed out that I had been able to track down the evidence of homosexuality and other characteristics in our limited family in every generation back to people born around 1865.
@skunktheshrink Like most teachers, he still believed in that you only could blame something in the society for this.
They were not of much help to the students who turned to them for advice.
My joy in life has been to talk to rural people about it. They accept you for who you are. They do not try to fit you into little boxes in attempt to label you
just to all the homophobic people out there: STOP BEING SO IGNORANT!
and to all the people who use the name of "God" to fight against homosexuality: "really, do you think of "the creator" as someone judgmental who only loves heterosexual people?
Honestly, if "God" hates a 9 year old who is realizing he is attracted to his/her same sex then I rather not believe in one at all.
Freaking love everyone, at the end of the day if you think we are sinning then we are not u!
Not too hard for Brian's teammates or anyone else for that matter to figure out the gay orientation. Guess this is OK if we still need to be promoting coming out stories in 2010. Guess I'm just tired of hearing them.
That's bollocks. This is supposed to help LGBT teens? Yeah, how many are going to be able to identify with the Captain of a football team with 90 subordinates at his side? Most LGBT teens will spend their time avoiding the alphamale mentality of a sports team. Good for this dude, but his 'coming out' was a bed of roses, clearly. This is not going to be representative of the struggle that the majority will face in coming out at High School.
Thanks so much Brian for sharing your story. This type of experience told from the perspective of an athlete gives substantive meaning to team unity. Your fellow team mates deserve equal respect for their candor and maturity; they were, and I suspect, continue to be, in a way, some of your own heroes. Thanks again!
That truly is an inspirational story... and shows the value of being 'out'... it allows people that insight into our lives to understand how what we do and say to each other impacts us all on a daily basis. truly awesome!
That is absolutely amazing. It definitely took a lot of courage to come out in such a way to people that you probably suspected might not be the most accepting. I wish I could just come out and be myself without fear of reprisal. Its hard being gay in a small town in the middle of Ohio. I'm glad everything worked for you though.
first of all, that guy is GORGEOUS! second of all, his story was so adorable, so surreal that it sounds like a tale from a fictional novel! xD great story! wish my coming out was as brilliant as that! xD
You are a beautiful man with beautiful team mates. thanks for sharing your story..there are not enough "good stories' out there!

this story is even more meaningful for me... i left HS hockey cuz of all the gay bashing (not directed at me) even from the coach. that was in the 70's... nice to know theres a light at the end of the tunnel

i really love this video. I don't think i'll ever come out, or even express my sexuality.
jonathan0012345 1 year ago 31
@jonathan0012345 Hey buddy, don't worry about coming out to your family until you know you're ready. It's a big step! You'll know when it's time. If you realize that you are definitely gay (or bi or trans), try telling a good friend, again when you're ready. Find some friends online that you can trust and chat with them. It's a process and shouldn't be rushed. Good luck and remember that there's a lot to look forward to after coming out! :)
ImFromDriftwood 1 year ago 51
@ImFromDriftwood thanks for your advice! It's really useful. I just have some questions. First of all, how exactly will I know the right time to come out? And who can you talk to if you don't have a friend? I don't really have a "good" friend, or at least one who I can really trust. Thanks for taking your time to help me out.
jonathan0012345 1 year ago
@ImFromDriftwood like what? (I am becoming more comfortable with myself now and this is all new to me; accepting who i am socially) I want to know what there is to look forward to in your opinion once I take this leap. Thanks!
Caglehead268 1 year ago
@jonathan0012345 he's right...never come out till your ready. watch as many of the coming out vids as you can. you will eventually figure out whats best for your situation. Never be afraid / ashamed of it, if your gay. it's perfectly natural. too many guys live a sad life by denying it, or thinking they can change.

@sleekcartim thanks for your reply. I really liked your advice!
jonathan0012345 1 year ago
@jonathan0012345 That is EXACTLY how I felt at your age and two years later (still in high school) I am in the process of coming out. The TV show Queer as Folk really helped me do it.

@jonathan0012345
one advice,
DONT come out to ur fanily when u r datin some1, esp if he is ITALIANO n not out just like u.
ArjaShariq 1 year ago
@jonathan0012345 I once thought like you did - but I found friends, gay friends and also straight friends who accept me the way I am. Of course there are people who are homophobic, but don't do them a favor by not living your life. It's a lot better to live your life to the fullest than live in fear. But I would definitely advise against coming out at the age of 14 if there's a real danger your friends would abandon or bully you and your parents would throw you out the house. Take your time. :)

@jonathan0012345 Things seem scary when you're 14. It'll get better. Love yourself, buddy.
Hyrshau 1 year ago

U just have to wait till your ready buddy.
forbzy1590 1 year ago
@jonathan0012345 three years ago i used to think like that.. that i WILL NEVER come out, but after watching videos like this, celebrities supporting the gay community, it has help me a lot!!,to be confrotable with my sexuality, i still havent come out, but now i know that i will do it ...very soon...!!!
nbmp80 10 months ago
@jonathan0012345 I'm passing through the same things you're passing. I'm 15 and I told my parents that I am gay. They were really surprised. My dad didn't want to talk to me and my mom won't accept me. I live only with my dad and my step-mom, right now. I have a brother and other relatives that know that I'm gay that support me. Being gay is hard sometimes, but it's also rewarding. I just want you to tell you to come out when you think it's safe.
victor19955 9 months ago
@jonathan0012345 Also remember that some people won't accept you right away, and not everyone is acceptin. People need time to understand and adjust. I know my dad will get over my homosexuality at some point, for I can't change it and this is who I really am. Remember that God loves us all. If there is a member in your family who you really trust, then start with that person and little by little you'll come to a point to feel happy with who you are and the people around you. Good luck :)

@jonathan0012345 Your sexual preference is your own business. I believe that you don't even have to tell your parents. But, if you're going that route, femininity will do the outing for you.

Man this guy makes it easier then it seems, the day I come out is the day my famz and friends disown me. In the Pacific culture it's a disgrace to be gay, so hate me If I don't come out it's a guilt I'll have for the rest of my life
FOBBOY86 1 year ago

KoldingDenmark 2 years ago
@KoldingDenmark american psychological association declined homosexuality to be a psychological illness in 1970s since it is so widespread no psychologist in his right mind would try to "cure" homosexuality.
skunktheshrink 1 year ago
@skunktheshrink My psychology teacher didn't try to cure me, he was just so full of Freud with all his "dominating mother - distant father" ideas, that I blew him away when I pointed out that I had been able to track down the evidence of homosexuality and other characteristics in our limited family in every generation back to people born around 1865.
KoldingDenmark 1 year ago
@skunktheshrink Like most teachers, he still believed in that you only could blame something in the society for this.
They were not of much help to the students who turned to them for advice.
My joy in life has been to talk to rural people about it. They accept you for who you are. They do not try to fit you into little boxes in attempt to label you

boring!
just to all the homophobic people out there: STOP BEING SO IGNORANT!
and to all the people who use the name of "God" to fight against homosexuality: "really, do you think of "the creator" as someone judgmental who only loves heterosexual people?
Honestly, if "God" hates a 9 year old who is realizing he is attracted to his/her same sex then I rather not believe in one at all.
Freaking love everyone, at the end of the day if you think we are sinning then we are not u!
Peace

Sounds like he had a pretty easy coming out. Especially for a football player!

Not too hard for Brian's teammates or anyone else for that matter to figure out the gay orientation. Guess this is OK if we still need to be promoting coming out stories in 2010. Guess I'm just tired of hearing them.
LanceRock 2 years ago
one wonders why you would then look up videos to watch on youtube with titles like "true gay stories" then.
10mintwo 2 years ago
That's bollocks. This is supposed to help LGBT teens? Yeah, how many are going to be able to identify with the Captain of a football team with 90 subordinates at his side? Most LGBT teens will spend their time avoiding the alphamale mentality of a sports team. Good for this dude, but his 'coming out' was a bed of roses, clearly. This is not going to be representative of the struggle that the majority will face in coming out at High School.
JoeClay16 2 years ago
I guess that's why no one's claiming it's representative of the majority then, huh.

@JoeClay16 i agree and to be honest noone would care if he wasnt easy on the eyes. seriously he should appreciate how exceptional his situation is.
