I have enjoyed watching Top Chef season 1 but I dont enjoy watching TC season 2 as much, cos of the back bitting, malicious spite and group victimizing towards Marcel, a fellow competitor. Marcel maybe irritating with his words but he is not petty, infact he was gracious to them for whatever they did to him. Ilian is clearly the instigator and the rest got so easily influenced, that's how bullying got started anywhere around.

On Top Chef EP11, Cliff, Elia, Ilan and Sam got drunk and decided to forcibly shave Marcel's head. Cliff approached a sleeping Marcel and wrestled him to the ground. Marcel freed himself from Cliff's hold and slept in a bathroom. Ilan videotaped the incident with a video camera borrowed from production and can be heard in the recording encouraging the other contestants to use the clippers on Marcel. The next day, Cliff was disqualified from the competition.

Marcel & Ilan both attended the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York at the same time. Both joined Top Chef S2 and ended up as the two finalists.

Ilan is a slimy individual. I doubt anyone who has been the show would even chance eating anything that he produced for fear of certain death by dysentery if they were on his bad list. After watching him and his underhanded ways, it would make one wonder what he would be substituting i his kitchen when not being watched. Also when he was taken to dinner with other chefs @ Tramonto's, everyone was nicely dressed for this upscale restaurant & he showed up in a dumpy t-shirt and looked slovenly.

I just watched this season over again online, and I gotta say that all these people that had a problem with Marcel...there was nothing aired that showed Marcel being a jerk!! I love Marcel and think he should have won over Ilan. I don't really think Marcel is as much as a jerk as he was edited to be on TC2. Yeah, at first he was downright assy (again probably due to reality show style editing), but towards the end it was more like the other boys who were always provoking him into being an ass.

This season haunted me. I have the tapes, have watched it at least 4 times. I oft think I am watching another show altogether... or else, most people don't value what I value. It's one thing to have a more task-driven rather than people-oriented nature... and thus placing less priority on people-pleasing; it's another altogether to deliberately size someone up, actively determine to despise them, incite others to turn against, even pressurize to cheat against.

as for personality wise, marcel is immature, but he's not violent. ilan engineered the attack on marcel -- while he was asleep! how cowardly was that! he was putting marcel down from the get go. and while he was slamming him to the rest of the chefs and production and on tape, he was reaching out to marcel. during hiatus before the final cookdown, he was calling marcel every day wanting to hang out with him. how fukked up is that?

I think Marcel was a bit too arrogant and self-centered (he explained though he didn't care to make friends in the contest) which pissed off the most of the contesters but he clearly was the only one who tried to put out something special.

I agree, they should have put down Ilan instead of Cliff, because he clearly was the one who started it and therefore he wanted the camera, it comes all clear now.

The final was okay, Marcel was clearly a bit too confused though I wanted him to win.

he didn't blame mike (or sam) for the missing fish... he was the leader and he took responsibility. and at least he made his own dishes. whether they went well or not, they were his own. ilan is, as chef tom put it, 'top cook'. all the dishes that he did well with were someone elses.  the tgi friday challenge, the romantic dinner challenge, the final cook-off. all someone else's dishes. his own creations crashed and burned. he's the sous chef. 2nd class.
