@superreverbking Smoking is bad, but lighting up with the right hand while playing the bass with just the left hand is one of the coolest stage moves I've seen, no panic, no rush. Fab.
I love the whole sound of this, the expressionful drum style, J.B.'s sharp toned voice and guitar both wailing, and the way the bass player is bending the notes at the top of the riff til it feels right. Wonderful stuff.
Fior about a year in '70-71 my wife and I used to go over to Rose & Kelly's on a
Thursday Night where J. B. Hutto had a gig. Man, it was cool. Earl Hooker's sister Tiny used to show up a lot and they'd serve "Hog's Head Sou' . J. B. sure could rock'em.
@BigNoseMusic Its a Teisco bass, Teisco made some great looking guitars in the 60's, the ET-460 guitar is really amazing, back then, Teisco instruments were sold for a cheap price, but their sound and unique options they had were REALLY awesome !
This is why they invented electric. J.B. and the Hound remain the best slide guitar players ever. Sound so cool and heavy at the same time. Thxs for posting
There was a club in St. Louis called "J.B. Hutto's," and the man himself played there frequently. He was always amazing, he'd get up on a table and wail. A very under-rated blues player.
Its so good ....that voice is unreal ...."what gives black people the blues" .....can somebody give me this weeks lottery numbers ......it is what it is and I love it
Look out for his early records on I think the "Chance" label, Pet Cream Man, and a cupla other great Doomy numbers, George Mayweather & Porkchops accompany him , outstandin early 50,s records.
Bands nowadays (ZZ Top) have roadies who come out and light their cigarettes (cigars in their case) for them, that takes real talent to play, light a cigarette, and avoid the people walking behind him.
Try to hear his earlier stuff on I think the Chance label, , more doomy that anything here. Also early Big Boy Spires, Murmer Low, & Dark & Stormy, think thats the right title, aint got my LP,s with me!
Yes, J.B. tears it up! The man was very enigmatic. He was highly under rated.
J.B. Hutto and The Hawks with Sunnyland Slim, Hawk Squat is the best Blues album ever. Did I say PERIOD. Additionally, this footage is from a video documentary titled Chicago Blues-excellent Blues education. It may be available at a library or on line.
Further, JB's cuts on the CD titled Chicago, The Blues today are also some of the best Blues ever cut. I found him years ago via this documenatary.
Night after night in Seattle in the late 70's I sat amazed listening to J.B. and his band play. He was one of the great conduits through which music flowed to many of us including me. He sometimes shot me a look as if to say, I know you're stealing my riffs... but, I don't play professionally, just for fun; still I can't deny that J.B.'s influence affects me still and unconsciously I am reflecting what I heard him play decades ago. What a great genius! You are not forgotten, J.B.
I know and dig what you are sayin...J.B. was a very under rated bluesman and one of my favs. I haveseen him many times her in N.Y.C. and always blew the bar away. Check out his nef. Lil Ed.
Yea, I was fortunate enough to see him play a few times live, not as many times as you, but about a dozen or so different occasions, and he was, is, and will continue to be one of my biggest influences. After the first time i saw him play, I bought 2 of those plastic airline guitars (one red w/ 2 p-ups, and one white w/ 3 pups) I got lots of laughs b/c of those guitars, but I was a proud man when I had one of those strapped on.
I used to see him in the 80's at Hutto's in St. Louis as a teen. My dad took me to see a legend, and it definately left an impression on me musically. I live in Baltimore, and no one in my circle knows what the hell Delta, or Mississippi blues are. They know SRV, or BB King. I pull out a slide, de-tune..and the response is WTF?? So, I try to culture them a bit...even sometimes in church I pull out the Dobro.
Thanks to britbluesfan for this wonderful share

I love his voice, and Elmore James.
But I hate when musicians can't wait to light a cigarette or drink something. Do that s#%t
While I'm talking to the crowd or introducing the next song.
