You people are absolutely nuts commenting on here. Judging by your comments, you act like orchestras and the arts are nothing but shit. Learn to appreciate the BETTER things in life. (aka- real talent) about them getting cuts- no idea what to say. I'm not really fully-educated about this situation.
@Magcomplex It's really about their pride. When the existing members applied for the orchestra, they had a status of being "In the Detroit Symphony." If the pay gets lower, it effectively is a "lower class orchestra". It's to them like getting a job as a Manager and then being trickled down into an assistant manager. It's really ridiculous.
There is more to Detroit than ghettos and violence. The Detroit Institute of the arts is a masterpiece of collections including the famous Diego Rivera murals that have to be seen to be believed. The Symphony is worldclass, I saw two of their concerts. Also, they have incredible restaurants and hotels.
