I've known lots of Arab/Persian men, and love how they dance. @boaveronika I heard it told that in Medieval times men dressed as women and belly danced because it was considered wrong for women to show so much skin in public, so it wasn't considered "wrong" or homosexual. Maybe you did not know that, it's not a problem, but people who spend a lot of their time in egypt know this (arabic and foreigners also experienced this.) @Gardedame unfortunately if you are a bellydancer you will not get married to someone from your coutnrty, maybe abroad, maybe your manager. It is still a shame, although they adore the dancers at the same time but no one would allow their daughter to dance publicly (there are more modern people of course but the majority is traditional) So every foreign dancer wnats to work in Egypt but no one from other Arabic countries:)

actually, throughout history men have "bellydanced" alongside women. In ottomen turkey more feminine guys danced when women were forbidden as well as egypt.

Also, when the west first saw raqs sharki in a travelling tour through USA, it was noted by the journalists that the men were far more skilled then the women but because they wanted to promote the east as something seductive, they never mentioned male dancers publicly; due to a conservative society.
