I remember this from Laugh in back in the sixties. Lily is the funniest sharpest comedienne since Lucille Ball. Seriously, they really ought to put her in something. She is a freakin' genius.
I'm soo excited to see this!!! My oldest sister (who is 18 years older than myself) use to imitate Edith Ann from Sesame Street all the time! This is going into my favorites!!!
the irony is that Edith Ann did not orginate on Sesame Street. This character was first on Laugh In and quite a bit more off colour and alot more bratty. She is great!
This skit really takes me back which tells you how old I might be. I remember one skit with Edith Ann telling how her mother let her paint her toenails...................now she can't get her socks off. How funny is that ?????????
Also ! : Nashville 9 to 5 All of Me The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe Short Cuts Flirting with Disaster Murphy Brown The X-Files The West Wing Orange County I Heart Huckabees A Prairie Home Companion The Ant Bully Desperate Housewives
I ponder who Sesame Street was truly aimed at when we were young, Diva. When I found out, as a young adult, that my folks, and most of their friends, were chronic pot smokers skits like this started to make a little more sense.
On the other hand, even my 5 year old mind knew that Hilarious House of Frightenstein wasn't meant to be watched without some form of artificial stimulation.
The other thing, is that I thought she didn't have a neck and couldn't turn her head because she would turn her body and head simultaneously or just her eyes. Was always creepy to me.
When I saw this on TV as a very young kid, I thought this woman was mentally disturbed and that the people at Sesame Street were wanting to help people accept mentally challenged people. Never occurred to me it was supposed to be a play on a child. Talking of the foods put in the sandwich and seeing her touch her shoes constantly was disgusting. Now, at age 34, it's actually kinda gross and hilarious at the same time lol.
LOL :) I only ever saw this once. I'm glad I found it. My friend never believed me that she did this skit about a sandwich. Now he's mad, cuz I was right. And that's the truth! PBBBBTH!!! :p
When I was a kid I remember wondering "Why is this adult acting like this? Is she backwards or something?" I really didn't enjoy these skits back then. It's now, when I'm older, that I get what she was doing.
If you watch Jon & Kate Plus 8 on TLC you'll see that when the little kids are in the interview chair they may not talk this clearly but they do move around alot just like Edith Ann.
this is scarry. this is what they dident know about menatal people in the 70s. there opening up the syc learning. giving the kid away. calling some retarted in those day. this reminds me of the old days. dope u up and put u into mental hospital. not much love in those days
She is sitting in an oversized chair. Lily Tomlin is normal size. She was in 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda. She was also in The Incredible Shrinking Woman and All of Me.
LOL i used to play Edith Ann when i was little. I'd sit (in this huge arm chair where my feet didnt touch the ground) and tell some long made up story and at the end i say "And thats the truth" and blow a rasberry! XD good times!
Quite possibly one of my favorite performers of all time. I wish I could come up with new characters like that... it's so hard to find someone with creativity in their comedy these days.
I LOOOOOVED Edith Ann when I was a kid and I LOOOOOVE her today. I still, to this very day, say "And that's the truth (ppppppllll)" all the time. Lily Tomlin is such a wonderful actress/comedian and I have loved everything she's ever done. Thanks for posting this.
