A 429 Ford engine in a lightweight AC Bristol car frame. This car was really giving Ferraris and Jaguars in the '60's a real Challenge; sometimes shutting them down altogether.
@pbrucpaul The 429 FE was never used in the cobra. Only the 260 (very early 1962 and 1963) and 289 small blocks and the big block 427 were ever used in The Shelby Cobras. But you are correct about them shutting down ferraris. Small block Cobras beat ferrari and Jaguar at their own game both in straight-line speed as well as handling.( only straight line speed for the big blocks- they didn't handle that well) The Cobras are legendary.
Obamacons?? Lets Bring back some '59 Impalas, complete with plastic/metal dashboards, no seat belts, shatter glass and get into a head-on collision! Damn Commies! Bring on the Newt!
maybe if you scrub enough toilets, you can save for a classic '69 GTO!
@luviananna I'd much rather wreck in an old impala than a smart car, or the new fiat 500. Personally, I'd take a '70 Boss 302, and no matter what new car I hit, I'd be walking away. These new cars a disposable - hence the term 'bic car', just like a bic pen. There's a market for super fuel efficient, safe commuter cars. But nothing will beat the roar of a big old V8 with a set of eldebrock carbs.. Just saying.
@ThoinFrostaxe Right on! I drive a Toyota Yaris, which is a fine car, but naturally if I had the money I'd much rather be in a '64 Corvette roadster with a 327 small block--maybe with Holley or Edelbrock dual quads and headers--nothing compares to the healthy rumble and roar of an American V8; you're right about that!
From the days when groups wrote songs about their cars, girlfriends, jobs and dancing. This is a great car song. How sad that the Obamacons and their Commissars are waging an assault on performance cars. Already, the car makers are deleting even the v6 in many models. Thanks for the posting and terrific picture montage.
A Top 5 hit for The Rip Chords in February 1964. On February 1, 1964, this was the #5 song in the USA. The #1 song was I Want to Hold Your Hand by The Beatles. Nothing more needs to be said.
@crazymusiclunatic No shit, i put that comment awhile back and got a few snotty messages!!! If people that had Prius' knew how much polution it took to make that car, they wouldnt buy it!! I hate dirty, stinky hippies!!!
Excellent montage, good sound quality too. Goes good next to 'Little GTO'. Long live Gary Usher, Jan Berry, and Brian Wilson - they produced the best car songs!
Nice Photos. Targa Florio 1964: Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Bob Bondurant, Masten Gregory, Jerry Grant, Innes Ireland, Enzo Arena, Vito Coco, Tommy Hitchcock and Prince Tchkotoua. Google the cobra ferrari wars.
@DJP49 love this song thanks my dad grew up with all these awesome songs and cars and everything hes still around but even i love the old cars and old music neil diamond is a personal favorite
Brilliant early 60s Sthn Calif Hot Rod Song .. one of the very best examples from that fabulous musical era & of that all-time wonderful sound & genre. GREAT POST !!
"I took my Cobra down to the track. Hitched to the back of my....Cadillac?" If Rhyme hadn't trumped greed, this song could have made a bundle from Ford!
Of course. Your talking to a guy who was in Europe when the Cobras won the FIA World Champanship in 1965, I even have a newspaper when I was there and it has a little story about them winning, Got CS to autograph and it is hanging on my wall along with my Shelby American's 1964 Sebring Poster that you could get back then. Saw Dan Gurney get the Cobras first FIA points at Bridgehampton LI

Jan and Dean met Carol one time and said,"we knew a woman wrote this song."
How? Carol asked.
"Because you don't take your Cobra out of gear and let it coast to the line!"
