one bad thing about mulch is mice, rats and bugs hide in it. got to watch out for them.

@crewlla I dont have mice or rats here, fortunately, and so far the only bugs I have encountered is spiders, which is fine to me.

@jakearick your very lucky then, I cant use mulch. to many mice...... which my dogs like bringing in the house as presents to me.
I am in central Cali too.... Weird.

Well as far as annuals that are surviving despite the frosts... calendula, nasturtium, sunflowers, and lettuce come to mind
Nice, mulch and leaves do come in very handy. In awe of your outside winter garden. What perennials do you have (that otherwise die in a frost)? : )
