  • I used to haul fuel and gasoline to the towns of Harlan and Hazard KY, through the Cumberland Gap on old 25 before they built the new road. I also delivered to the mines in KY and Jelico TN. Pulled from Knoxville, usually in the middle of the night so as to not get in the way of the traffic and to keep folks safer.

  • @brandiroach23 - Grapevine family here, Massey Energy Union Coal mining family.

  • it so hard to wait for your daddy to get home and him be 15 minutes late.

  • God I love her and so proud of her for winning the Grammy for Mountain Soul II.

  • Such a haunting song and Patty tells the story so beautifully.

  • Shouldn't it be "you'll never leave Clay County alive"? Seems that's the more dangerous place.

  • I'm a Harlan County Coal Miners Daughter and I must say That Miss Patty sings this song better than any one.

  • @mistyblue1965 The Anderson family does a good job with it, but it's pretty obvious that they haven't lived it.

  • I'm a Harlan Coal miners Daughter and I love Patty singing this..WOW what a voice..

  • @BigBlueFan1987Patty Loveless (born Patty Lee Ramey, January 4, 1957) born in Pikeville, Kentucky, and was raised in Elkhorn City, Kentucky and Louisville, Kentucky. She lost her dad, as I did my grandfather (in the South Wales coal mines). to the black lung. not a nice way to go pray tell us, BigBlueFan; what's your background?

  • I am WV born and raised on the Coal River. I lost a Grandfather to Black Lung. Also a cousin to a Slate drop. 9 lb. hammer ,Dark as a Dungeon. Now this song. Love it.

  • I've always loved coal mining songs. "Sixteen Tons", Dark as a Dungeon", "Nine Pound Hammer". But this one is the best of them all.

  • @BigBlueFan1987

She was born in Pikeville,KY and raised in Elkhorn City and Louisville.....hmmm who knows.

  • @BigBlueFan1987 She was a kid of a coal miner and she lost her Dad to black lung when he was only 58. I think she is qualified to sing this song

  • @BigBlueFan1987

Her father was a coal miner and died from it. Yeah, probably she doesn't know where Pineville is. Most famous people were not always famous. Her talent is why she is famous. Thank God or I would never hear her sing

  • @BigBlueFan1987 dumb sh_t! do the home work 'fore you open your ignorance for all to see

  • @BigBlueFan1987 - do you know where Harlan is without thinking? Just curious....

  • My Papaw was from Pineville. He talked about it all the time so even though I've never been there I know where it is. And Pineville isn't that far from Pikeville where Patty grew up.

  • Way, way better than Brad Paisley's version, and she sang way before he did!

  • @xeyedpig truth!

  • These vocals can give you goosebumps! Patty is great!

  • The BEST version of this song...Brings a lot of memories as my paternal grandmother's family originated in Harlan and I spent a few summers in coal camps there many years ago...

  • Patty Loveless is a national treasure..and congrats to Patty for her upcoming induction to the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame!

  • This is the best song from the best singer! It was worth it to shorten it for TV. Oh my!

  • Patty's the best!!!
