Guys, thats what interp is about, useing your talents and what you can do, and putting your all into your piece, these guys used their beat skills to their advantage.....so yes they put race into it, but thats what they are good at :)
@tgjdlc But they did it throughout the whole thing.. When the "mother" is talking to the "son" about how she "brought him into this world", but it's not during the intro.
Well think about it, when choosing your duo peice you wouldn't chose a peice that doesnt fit of own type of character would you? i mean you have to chose something that you can actually play play. So more often than not contestants pull out peices dealing with race, style of other personally relatable objects.
Let me commend you gentlemen on a job well done! In searching for forensics video to illustrate to prospective students, it took much effort and time to find African American/Black males in representation...but when I did I discovered the National Champs!
I'm an educator who will proudly share this video as an example of our diversity (beyond sports) despite how depiction in the media. My students need to see their (like) images.
I remember the first time i saw this vid was at states 09. My God... every round there was like a kazilliion "observers" just to watch their duo! haha I would go to their round after my opp round was done! boy I wish i did duo!
Saw these two again in rounds 9 and 12 (and Finals) of the KC 2010 Nationals. They took fifth with "The Little Tommy Parker Celebrated Colored Minstel Show".
@Eridinian What do you mean by that? Did they portray stereotypical black characters? Certainly, and they're entitled to b/c they have the ability just like asian characters by asian kids and white, preppy characters by white kids. I say play to your strengths. I think people are perfectly entitled to do whatever pieces they can pull off.
While it is true that black culture is evident in this piece, I don't think they pulled the race card. This story is about the difficulty of growing up and becoming a real man. If the story was about the struggles of African Americans in society, then it would have been a race piece. Overall I think this is a very well done duo.
@crazy50128 ok MOOVVEE! they did the wiz cause michael jackson had just died...thats it..not cause its a black movie, not cause they are black. and although the wiz intro did have a race joke in it.....every one in the building was going crazy cause they knew it was true! if wizard of hip is a race piece...than so is anna and august because they were "white" characters..
In all fairness, this final round was probably the worst performance from them I've ever seen (and I've seen them perform at least 5 times live). Whatever you do, don't judge them based off of this round, they were nervous, off-time, and sloppy. That's the reason they didn't win the bowl, but walked away with the biggest trophies, there's more than this round.
i cant help but brag about this but those two guys go to my school. ive personally met them they are my friends/mentors and ishmael (the long, skinny one) was coaching my duo. this year they are doing a piece about racism in the old times. i entered forensics because of these two. its a pity they are graduating this year.
However, the story...isn't up to snuff. Yeah, the characterization in the first half is great, but the sudden switch to hospital drama is little more than ham-fisted (couldn't there be less cliched way for the father to die?). I realize that it's a problem with the script, but it's a serious setback. Seven minutes of family detail plus one minute of emotional goodbyes plus one minute of wrap-up plus one minute of laughter does not make a convincing thesis or story.
To set the record straight: they do have blocking, very nuanced and controlled blocking. They don't have to look as crisp as the Truongs to be effective; perhaps the reason why people don't think their blocking looks "crisp" is because their blocking is very fluid and natural.
I personally felt they were stronger in round at state for california. I was in two prelims with them. I literally fell out of my chair the first time. The have awesome presence, but even more so live. Its so interactive
The reason why this speech was is so incredible is because it is an original script, as well as a one that just fit them perfectly. They also took that script and were able to make it into a national calibur speech which is a very difficult task to do (especially with this type of a script).
And both of these guys have such a great stage presence, as soon as they start, you just want to hear what they have to say. That for me is why I enjoyed watching this speech so much.
Um, while I agree I loved the speech, couple of facts... the script was not original 2001 National Champion in HI, 2005 Duo Semifinalist. But yeah, it was great. I've just seen better (2005 one)... the one thing they did with this that the other didn't, is that the story line was just more crisp.

I dont get why so many people thought this was so funny? they're really sloppy and they aren't that funny, when this audience is applauding im just like... what.. why? They're just not that good of performers... idk
you wouldnt get it if your not a true interper, itss hard to pull of the stuff they do with such precise timing and put as much effort as they have. it takes a ton of work to become as good as these guys are and that deserves the laughs and applauds theyre getting.
Every once in a while we get to see something that is amazing! This is what Interpretation is all about. Wonderful performance...stunning actually.
