Good question. The only thing I can think of is that with your mates you are always trying to out do each other. Acts of bravery/madness etc are applauded and encouraged to go even more mental. It tends to lift everyone until pure natural talent determines who is the best rider/surfer etc and then MAYBE they get into competition and move on from there. That was true for me and my mates when I was younger. Not the competition part though.

SierraKilo9: good theory, but no thats not the reason - no nation is necessarily braver than an other - Aussies are good because they mostly start riding off-road from a Very young age and so are more used to the bike moving out of line and controling it....look at any rider who is good/likes sliding/sideways action, and they'll mostly all have good/alot of off-road experience.  Aussies just have a predisposition to this because of their vaste country/outback.

I totally agree with the off road riding controlling slides etc, but I am an Aussie and I can tell you one up-manship and pushing well past sane limits is or at least was a sport in itself. Its real I can assure you and it transcends bravery its more like 'I'm going to do it and thats all there is to it' type of an attitude, Who Dares Wins if you will.
