I have posted another video with a more detailed views of the extractor. we used two lock washers and two standard washers and two nuts to hold the bottom frame support in place. we applied quite a bit of force tightening the bottom nut up against the upper nut, we haven't had any problems with the nuts slipping.
I've built one of these, and tried to use it today. My problem: I used two lock nuts to hold the lower frame holder in place, one above and one below. What I didn't foresee was that when it started spinning, it unscrewed the lower nut, and basically spun itself to pieces. How do you keep the lower frame holder stationary on the central rod? Please let me know, as I'm sick of doing crush & strain. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I'm trying to build a similar design and am wondering if it possible to build a four frame version of this (with two more frames next to the others). Do you think you can build an extractor of the same type but just a little wider? Or will the drill not be able to take the weight.
I love it ...(except for the trash can...Not food grade!!) but I like the idea going to try to make 1. gotta find some type of berring for the bottom.
Yes, but it was a new part from the hardware store, the bearing is about the size of an old silver dollar, is made of nylon, except for in the middle, it is stainless steel sleeve and ball bearings.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for recording this! The extractors that are sold are so expensive! These retailers are discouraging backyard beekeepers from becoming successful & continuing with this hobby which is so important to the bees that are disapperaring. Pesticide (nicotinides) has caused CCD which the for-profit commercial beekeepers have caused. Just like FEMA failed in response to Hurricane Katrina, so the EPA has failed in testing nics BEFORE being sold to growers!!
yes we used a fork to scrape the cap off the comb, it worked well. just lightly scrape the comb and the cap crumbles.

Did you uncap the comb first?

@nousernameideasleft I think that might be a problem, if you add another set side by side you would need a really wide can/bucket.

What type of drill are you using? That thing's got some power!!! My little drill wouldn't have that kind of power, I don't think. Tips?
Opry99er 11 months ago
@Opry99er The drill is just a low end electric drill, it really does not take much power to get it spinning.

This is great! What type of bearing did you use in the bottom?
RockCairn 11 months ago
@RockCairn The bearing was a sealed nylon patio door bearing, purchased it at the hardward store.
