I'm going to start doing this. Since I run marathons my leg muscles are like a horse. I have some shoulders,but no arm muscles, and a little bit of a back.
first time i did pull ups my max was 3 but i would do 3 sets on every workout (3X week). after about a 2 months i now do 15 per set and my max is now 18. my goal is to eventually do 25 per set.

This video really inspired me too start trainning, when all my mates laughed that I couldn't do any let alone one 'half' pull up without jumping, I first watched this video mid last year (August 2011) I can now do 12 perfect full extension pull ups.... who's laughin now ;) Thanks for the inspiration, used your techniques in this video! Can't recommend them highly enough.
i have a question....some tutorials say while doin pull ups one must keep his hands tense at all times even when coming back down.....hanging with straight arms damage shoulders?? is it true??
@pingufromindia You should keep your shoulders tense at all times when hanging from your arms, otherwise you could risk tearing a muscle/dislocating your shoulder.

@snowwolfable Push ups don't help you in doing your pull ups, even if you do a 100 push ups per set it still wont help. You need to train your back by doing simple things like incline pull ups shown in this video /watch?v=wdcUYCrg6yc *which is not mine* if you can do this easily and atleast 30reps per minute, you are ready for pull ups my friend :)
i can do chin ups pretty "easy" but pull ups are damn hard for me is that normal? if i start doing them on a bar is it ok to start with 5reps 4reps 3 reps for example like really low..

@kaoruu945 pounds, I think it's because my parents made me start eating healthy like 8 years ago, we've been eating organic and lots of vitamins. also last semester I took a weight lifting class, and my multi vitamin had a lot of vitamin b in it, so I got stronger from that

@Fjerid I doubt it, you need to work out more than your back or you can't get bigger muscles fast, and it will look strange and likely damage you. Some good excercises to get a good body without doing isolation exercises are squat, deadlift, benchpress, pull ups and military press.
The reason for that is if you only work on your back you won't release as much growth hormone as you will from training the other muscles aswell.
@Heyitsvictoragain True... I've been doing squats and benchpresses lately and i noticed they are amazing! So i went on the internet to check its benefits and i read squat is the best excersise for HGH release :D

Good thing you mentioned the Negative pull ups. Those are really good for beginners if they can't seem to be able to do any, it helps build strength nicely.
The video is great and very informative. For beginners like it would be certainly a great help in using this exercise. I do happen to know a link of a site that could help you gaing lean muscles and develop a lean muscular look apperance. Its main focus is to add muscles on your body parts proportionally and srategically to improve your appearance. Youtube won't allow me to post the link but you can always check it on my profile.

Hi. I'm currently only able to do 7 pull ups at most for my first set. Is it enough for me to train with 10 sets of 3 just only once every tuesday & work on my bicep directly on every friday? I wanna prevent over training at all cost. I have two goals in mind. Increase my bicep size & the number of pull ups that I can do.
@Ivok4e I'm no expert, but I think that u must have strong triceps. This might explain why u can do narrow push up cause u use ur triceps a lot more to bring urself up as opposed to regular pushups where u would use ur chest and shoulder strength more or as much as ur triceps. ( i think it is impressive that u can do more narrow pushups than regular ones, but u should work on balancing ur muscles.)
can do 30 pushups at once but couldnt do more than 3 pullups :s but thanks to this i can now do 7 ;) btw i am 14 yo 6'1 and 160 lb's......is my weight ok, for practicing 3 different sports?
If you cant do a pullup,keep doing flexed arm hangs and strength training,if you want to increase pullups do weighted pullups,will make a big difference
I often do a pull up/pressup superset, whereby I do wide-grip pull ups until I fail, then straight after do close-grip pull ups (palms facing) until I fail, and then lastly I do press-ups until I fail. Afterwards, I literally collapse on the floor of the gym. I do this x5 before moving on with another exercise.
It is absolutely killer and has helped my skinny body gain good strength & size as a result.
@MrNflow it doesnt mean a thing bro at one point i was able to do 120 push ups but could do only 1 pull up, its a completly different excersize and it works different muscle groups.

I am 53 years old,yes 53 and this video has been the basis of my pull ups.Within six weeks I have gone from 10 pull ups to over 60 pull ups,not great but a lot better than I was.Above all stick at it.

i do 120 push ups daily well i only take break on weekends

If you can't do one pull up just do chin ups, which is what he refers to as pull ups with palms facing you, they are much easier.

Hi. I'm currently only able to do 7 pull ups at most for my first set. Is it enough for me to train with 10 sets of 3 just only once every tuesday & work on my bicep directly on every friday? I wanna prevent over training at all cost. I have two goals in mind. Increase my bicep size & the number of pull ups that I can do.

@Ivok4e if u mean close grip its more ur arms then ur chest wide arms spread puts more emphasis on ur chest muscles

@Ivok4e I'm no expert, but I think that u must have strong triceps. This might explain why u can do narrow push up cause u use ur triceps a lot more to bring urself up as opposed to regular pushups where u would use ur chest and shoulder strength more or as much as ur triceps. ( i think it is impressive that u can do more narrow pushups than regular ones, but u should work on balancing ur muscles.)

can do 30 pushups at once but couldnt do more than 3 pullups :s but thanks to this i can now do 7 ;) btw i am 14 yo 6'1 and 160 lb's......is my weight ok, for practicing 3 different sports?

I'm 13, weigh 203lbs of solid, drug free strength and I can do over 80 pull ups in a row from DEAD HANG, no KIPPING, perfect form. :P

If you cant do a pullup,keep doing flexed arm hangs and strength training,if you want to increase pullups do weighted pullups,will make a big difference

Great tutorial !
I often do a pull up/pressup superset, whereby I do wide-grip pull ups until I fail, then straight after do close-grip pull ups (palms facing) until I fail, and then lastly I do press-ups until I fail. Afterwards, I literally collapse on the floor of the gym. I do this x5 before moving on with another exercise.
It is absolutely killer and has helped my skinny body gain good strength & size as a result.

@MrNflow it doesnt mean a thing bro at one point i was able to do 120 push ups but could do only 1 pull up, its a completly different excersize and it works different muscle groups.

If your palms are facing you, those arent pull ups. Those are chin ups. Pull ups work your lats and biceps. Chin ups only work your biceps

I am 53 years old,yes 53 and this video has been the basis of my pull ups.Within six weeks I have gone from 10 pull ups to over 60 pull ups,not great but a lot better than I was.Above all stick at it.
Will be following for the abs and back.Thanks for allowing an oldie like me to partake.

Thanks, this is helpful! Small observation: The transitions are so fast in the video that I had to constantly go back and forth so I could read, study the image, read, study the image, etc. But very helpful!
