Man I tell you I'm 21 years old and I listen to what I call great music as far as jazz, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Country even classical and I tell you she's the greatest AND she only sang one genre of music (Gospel) and she's my favorite singer then there's everyone else no questions Asked! Also, I read her biography, seen all her intervews, listened to all her music, and it seems like her soul was spotless as if she was an angel from GOD Listen to that VOICE
She was a wonderful testament to what faith represents in the Christian life, she was a genuinely nice woman and funny too. I remember she would sneak me cake when my grandmother wasn't looking! Smiles..... I was devastated by our loss of her. Oh, my I mourned for years as she is one of the first personal deaths that I experienced in my youth. She died Jan. 27th of 1972, my great grandfather passed in Jan. of 1973 he was 108 yrs. old and she would come by the house keep company with him. RIP!
@PrettyBlack1966 Wow... I wish I was born back then. I always here folks comment about her sense of humor. If you get a chance look at the interview that Billy Always has on youtube. He speaks about her for a good minute. He was one of her MANY godchildren; one of her favorites it seems.
First let me say i just love Mahalia Jackson and she is without dout the Greatest Gospel Singer of all time hands down! But it's just sad to see the way they used her all the way up until her death without a bit of rest performing show after show after show for people who were forcing her to do so, and this people is sad to work a person to death just for your entertainment pleasures. i won't talk about how racisim was so polite to her and at the same time making this woman into a workhorse sad!
@datruefinder Very interesting. In reading some of her biographies I also feel the same. Except, I also feel that she was driven by her gift. Similar to Martin Luther King Jr. I'm sure he felt tired and discouraged. But, then the Holy Spirit revives. This woman sang with her whole being. I'm sure it was exhausting as she aged. She sang like a trumpet telling about her faith. I'm sure it was exhausting but exhilarating at the same time to have such a gift! Your life is not your own.
