@SIGNALSTAT Here's an idea, also inspired by the '70s: The famous Tylenol recall of tainted tablets. How 'bout we get a hold of some and you take three Christmas morning?
Planet of the Apes reference books can be found on Amazon. They include "Timeline of the Planet of the Apes: The Definitive Unauthorized Chronology" and "From Aldo to Zira: Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes-The Comprehensive Unauthorized Encyclopedia." Both from Hasslein Books.
My God this brings back memories. I was NUTZ about these as a kid. All the kids in my neighborhood was into them as well. My favorite was the "Urko" figure.
I had cornelius and my sister forced me to have him marry her Barbie doll when we were 7years old. In our room, over time...Barbie also married:Steve Austine, the hulk, spiderman, The thing from the fantastic four and Dr. Bones from star trek..Barbie was a slut...:-)
used to have the tree house compound as a kid -pain in the ass to put together lol
were the hell did you find this.... always confused the hell outta me that they were white when you took their clothes off.... they're suppossed to be apes guess they did'nt know what color apes were back then.
I saw the mego mystery man! If I"m right, mego had the rights to marvel and DC, yet neither has had his appearance in a comic (unless you say he's from one of those sci-fi anthology stories.)
To the best of my recollection, these figures were on sale at store shelves until at least 1977, which is years after the movies and TV series had ceased production.
To my knowledge, there was no "Brent" figure.
There was a horse and an elaborate treehouse type laboratory.
I guess both movies both came out in '68, and both had something to do with apes, human evolution and space, which is why they used the theme from 2001. The theme music from POTA wasn't that great.
My cousin & I had the figures and even the accompanying "set", the hut or whatever it was called. But the plots and storylines we invented were full of hilarious dialogue and exchanges. All clean stuff, but riotous...wish I'd written some down...
Ahh, the memories. I absolutely LOVED these toys. They were my favorite out of the Mego collection. Although it did bother me that General Ursus didn't wear a helmet like the character in the movie (same as Urko's).
I had these dolls, To this day cannot figure why astronaut wore a jet pilot helmet !. I remember there was also a play set called Judson's Garage. Meco also made all the Space 1999 and Star Trek Stuff
These disappeared mysteriously from my toy collection when I was a kid. I had all but the Astronaut who was kinda boring by comparison. Boys had all kinds of cool dolls in the '70s! :)
do u still have them ? are they not worth money now ? i didn't have them and i don't know anyone that did...i have never even heard of mego toys b4. it must be just an american thing.
I had 3 of these 5 figures, and thanks to the discovery of lighter fluid & M-80's as a kid growing up in the 70's, they don't exist anymore. I also had the Planet Of The Apes treehouse for these. Anyone remember that?
The Astronaut wasn't ment to be Heston's character Taylor. Mego didn't get the rights to Heston's likeness to make a Taylor figure (which they were planning on making) so they just made a generic Astronaut and simply called "the Astronaut".
I had every single one of these and broke them all after a few years. Too bad. I should've kept them in the box. My father hated them because he didn't want his son playing with dolls. I turned out straight, though.
lmao my father was the same way, with me it was g.i.joes lol. although i did have some of the planet of the apes model kits. oh yeah, i turned out straight as well.
joey: Wow! I had completely forgotten about that. I had the treehouse, too, and I think a bunch of rock caves and stuff (I may be mixing that up with another toy, though)! Man, my father hated that stuff...so worried his son was gonna be a fruit. HA HA
There was a catapalt with a wagon, a horse that moved slowly along, a Forbidden Zone fortress, and some kind of tall look out thing... The Treehouse in a box is worth a few bucks on Ebay!
GEEZ, all of these buried memories are flashing back at me with every toy you mention. I think I had most of this stuff, but it's all gone now. Still love to watch the original movies though! All classics!
The woman scientist, cause the fact that she's an intelligent ape isn't half as unbelievable as the fact that she has a career.

Correction:
An Urko and Ursus doll were put out as part of Mego's collection for the TV series.
Urko had the headgear and outfit, Ursus looked very dark skinned, muscular, and brutal.
wheelinthesky300 2 years ago
M-16 machine guns were indeed supplied with the Ape soldier, as pictured here.
In the first 2 films, however, the Apes did not use M-16s, but a modified M1 rifle.
Some sexism here
-Zira referred to simply as a "woman scientist", but she was an Animal Psychiatrist.
wheelinthesky300 2 years ago
These figures were based on the first movie, that's why the Ape soldier is generic.
A General Ursus was put out soon after.
There were also figures from the TV series, including Galen, Virdon, Burke, and Urko.
For some reason, Urko had the head gear and costume, but Ursus had neither, he was more muscular than the generic Ape soldier,
with glowering expression, and dark skinned.
wheelinthesky300 2 years ago
I have those figures.
The astronaut does resemble Chuck Heston
-he has red hair and a large nose.
To the best of my recollection, these figures were on sale at store shelves until at least 1977, which is years after the movies and TV series had ceased production.
To my knowledge, there was no "Brent" figure.
There was a horse and an elaborate treehouse type laboratory.
wheelinthesky300 2 years ago
My astronaut was labeled Brent. He was the one after Heston or one of the series astronauts.

Why does the solider ape have a M16 when in the movies they have bolt action rifles?
n00buler89 3 years ago
IIRC, the M-16's were leftovers from Mego's GI JOE knockoff "Action Jackson".
