  • Easy enough. I should have that sometime in 2042.

  • Is it just me or Tommy looks a bit like Marty McFly in this video? :D The greatest guitar player of all times anyways)

  • A brilliant musician! Great lesson!

  • Awesome. I'm going to try this.

  • Exclusive harp harmonics.

  • fuckin freak

  • Is there anyway I can do this without having to practice or have any talent at all?

You know, just pick up the guitar and do it without any of the hard stuff?

    No?

    IT'S NOT FAIR!

  • Is there any way to do this with just your fingers and not a pic?

  • @walrein947 you could try picking with your middle finger, hitting the harmonic with your index...could work..haven't tried it...it's hard as hell with a flatpick,..I know that much...I can't do it for shit yet.....lol

  • he looks young xD

  • You call this a lesson?! Oh, please!

  • Did everybody get that ?? lol

  • Towards the end... like the last 10-15 seconds... does it sound like a song from the Legend of Zelda?

  • thank you master

  • I know this isn't really relevant to the lesson. But on a set of monitors, you can hear a lot of extra reverb. Lol

  • wow, i cant even get 0:03 seconds into a Tommy Emmanuel video without explosively shitting my pants.

  • 1:13 love this part

  • guitar master

  • I almost cannot believe anyone could "dislike" this guy or his playing. What an amazing touch.

  • how can he be so versitile he can play with thumb pick, just a plectrum, none at all

id hate to think wat other parts of his body he could play guitar with

  • it`s not funny, Tommy

  • how do you know what fret to be holding your finger for harmonics when you get different chords involved?

  • @dbfydtn Well, from the point-of-view of a right-handed player: if, say, there's an open-position A-chord being fretted with your left hand then the finger on the right-hand would touch (to generate the harmonic) at (from 6th string to first string) the 12th fret, then the 12th fret again, then 14th fret for the next three strings and 12th fret for the sixth string. And so on for any and all chords.

  • @geeflat ah okay thanks. i figured.

  • @dbfydtn In this case, if you're right-handed, you put the index finger of your right hand 12 frets above the note you're holding with your left hand. That's it. You can also try 5 frets (or 24 if I'm not mistaken), but that's kinda hard imo.. But it'll add another octave to your playing.

You can also use harmonics 7 frets higher than the note you're holding, adding an octave and a fifth. So holding down a G-chord and playing every note with that 7-frets-higher harmonic would make it a D-chord.

  • I just saw Tommy "live" 3 months ago. In-Frikn-credible! He did mention that

"he never learned to read music" Its all by ear.................

  • wow....that's as hard as it sounds..

  • i see it, i hear it, i get it, i just cannot do it...

  • yeah...me too....I'm pretty sure tommy plays at night when he's asleep...bringing his playing per day up to 23 1/2 hours....

  • wow Tommy teaches?!

    wow. awesome

  • i cant do that... i dont have enough frets!!!, now i have to buy a new guitar......

  • retardwhore

  • @doozrey you don't need frets for the right hand part!!

  • @mrlaa1 thats not what i meant. to play what he is playing. not just the right hand part

  • @doozrey ahh i see my error

  • @doozrey actually you dont

you just have to touch the string with your first finger where the fret would be if you had enough. It doesn't have to be on the fretboard since you don't really press on the string.

  • @sasukekubiwa ok. i tried this out, thanks alot fpr the help!

  • wat sort of maton does he play?

  • Ah good this taught me alot

  • love that guitar

  • There's a copy of this DVD on eBay UK! Hardly ever see it up for sale.

  • hi i'm a learning guitarist (classical piano 12 years) and i'm not too good with harmonics. I just have a question on when he did the d9 shape around 1:53. is the reason he played different frets with the picking hand so he could make a harmonic on the octave?

  • Yes, that's correct.

  • Yes :)

  • love you man, God bless you

  • just awesome...

But even if I spend the whole night playing, I guess I won't be able to do half of this thing!

  • what a PRO.

  • Speaking frankly, he´s the MASTER, not me!

  • ALL of this stuff was done in the 1950's By CHET. And Tommy Emmanuel has got it Down Pat.

He like Chet is going to be responsible for some GREAT future players. Especially since the Advent of YOUTUBE. GREATEST place on the Internet.

  • man D9 while holding the bottom three with your ring finger is a challenge

  • Luapnnihs, that ring-finger thing is really is the least challenging aspect of what he's teaching. It's the right hand you have to worry about.

  • it is standard tuning, you dont need to be in an alternative tuning to play harmonics, the point is you just need to play the octive...and then to play it that clean and fast...

  • Should be standard EADGBE. Tommy claims he basically can't use alternate tunings.

  • not true. He often uses a 'Drop D' for some songs, but I can[t think of one right now. He keeps a 2nd axe on stage for that.

  • For example, he plays "Imagine" in Drop-D...

  • what tuning is he using?

  • I'm learning this but it's really hard

  • This guy is awesome.

  • He makes it look so easy!

  • "In't that sweet?"

  • I LOVE THIS MAN

  • awesome!! i've not enough words

  • damn thats hard...

  • I saw him once. his videos cannot compare to the power he has live. He plays 1 song that im lookin for . i cant remember the namebut it was a song he wrote about his experiences with the natives of australia. would love to see that hear please. thank you for the videos

  • It's called "Initiation". There are many performances of it on Youtube (just do a "search").

  • nice!! Thanks dawg! Truly it is a mind bending song

  • I've been playing for about 17 years and I barely heard of him a couple of weeks ago. Where the hell have I been??? I've never heard or seen that type of harmonics before. Saying this man is "talented" is insulting to the entire music world. WOW!

  • I said it before: he is a divine incarnation, not only loves to make people happy, but also loves to teach and demonstrate.

does not hum or haw or hesitate

  • I once saw Tommy in Scotland borrowing a young lads guitar to demonstrate to someone in the village street !

  • holy crap, this man is awesome! beautiful sound!

  • jesus christ this man is a god. screw heavy metal guitarists. Ive seen him live twice and im in awe.

  • Cool...If you get a minute, check Mathew Smith (Padre) and (Rodreigus). Mathew hasn't had any lessons but did get Mr. Emmanuel's video on tecniques..check out how he plays..Beautiful! Thankyou.

  • calling him a ledgend would be offensive

  • I have to get this DVD - great stuff - thanx for posting

  • God given talent for music meets God given talent to listen and to appreciate. Thank God for Tom E

  • Lord of guitar...

  • There's only one Tommy

  • This is fantastic. This guy has inspired me to carry on learning guitar. Chris - UK (TOMMY, COME TO THE UK PLEASE!!!)

  • Thank you so much for this lesson Tommy Emmanuel! And Greetings from Rome Italy :)

  • Excellent instruction--Thank you from Ottawa, Ontario Canada

  • yes, yes he is.:)
