Many general insults started that way. Bastard for instance, it is still used today but it's understood that the insult has nothing to do with actually being a bastard and that's the direction we see the word gay taking. I believe one could make a case for it being a good thing.

I can´t even remember how many times I´ve heard people say stuff like "gay carriers", "gay reavers", "that proxy was totally gay", and not take notice of how insulting it actually is. I have to say I agree with moletrap.
