Bill... man you really have a lot of knowledge on making professional videos. Did you go to school for this at all?
I have always wanted to get more involved in making videos but going to start saving for the Cannon HD-20 and make some awesome videos. I recently volunteered to operate a video camera at our church....looking forward to it. THANKS AGAIN man.... send more !
@rickmlamb1 thanks man, i never went to school for this stuff all of this knowledge is primarily off of my passion for filming and editing, its a good passion to have and good to have for the rest of your life
@AlexJunkeeLamson this actually isn'y a black backdrop, I have a blue bed sheet behind me which I then chroma key when editing, the lighting was done with 3 normal house lamps placed on the left, right and behind the camera
Hi great video. My question is regarding video editing software. I have a Mac and want to do some basic editing- nothing signifcant. I took your advice and looked at the Final Cut Express 4, but it's very expensive. I have two goals: 1) To simply edit home movies such as the very beginning and ending of the video where I turn on and off the camera. 2) To take multiple youtube videos on the web and consolidate parts of those videos into 1 video. Thanks!
@KevinParnella if you want to do basic video editing on a mac try using iMovie 8 or whatever version you have of iMovie, as for taking youtube videos of the internet your going to need a video capture software which basically takes a video of your computer screen, play the youtube video full screen on your computer and then let the video capture software record the video
@bILLproductions7669 Hi thanks for the info. I figured out what i was trying to accomplish. I used a software program called screenr.com. It allows you to watch a video on YouTube and record it and then upload it.
I'm going to take my second question to the people at the Mac store tomorrow and bring them my camera, and my connectors and ask them how I can upload videos from the camera to youtube. I did it before, but I cannot remember how I did it.
I really liked it. Just a personal question- when you say to use lighting, do you mean just lights in the ceiling or actually real lights that some professionals use? If so, how much do they usually cost??
@ps31rokursox what he probably means is just light from any source.
my suggestion: use can lights with clamps. they're about 10 bucks, you can get them just about anywhere, and they use standard light bulbs of any kind (although most can lights can't use bulbs over 100 watts)
this is good advice for the amateur but it is nowhere near the advice needed to look more professional. also, the way you presented the material was rather boring and bland. As Johnny Depp once said... Nobody likes a mumbler! I'm not trying to hate on your video, just giving constructive criticism.
You left out Linux. Cinnellerra and Kdenlive work well, but are not that user friendly. For a program that can do what After Effects does, check out Blender, it isn't user friendly, but it is powerful. You do need some experience with 3D modeling, but it is a 3D software package- you may have used Blender for years and not even known that it could do chromakeying or masking. Check out BlendThatFilm for more information.
Ps. I actually find blender's image sequencer kind of lame, but it gets th

Hey in the description you might want to update the fact that you can see what your filmed now on the Go Pro they came out with a lcd piece attachment. Thanks nice video
@Robellislol the camera you mentioned costs over $2000, not including the cost of lenses which can be hundreds and thousands of dollars and this video is geared more towards making better videos on a lower budget, if you want to drop somewhere around $3000 for a new VIDEO CAMERA, then I would suggest buying the Sony HDR-FX1000 which is preferred by majority of professional videographers, if you like taking pictures more then I would suggest your camera
@bILLproductions7669 No way, Sony HDRFX1000 is... BAD. I Actually sold it and bought an extra lense+grip+battery+new memory card for my 5DmarkII. if u wanna go pro, get the canon 5D, if u got around 6.000$ go buy the Panasonic AG-AF100, but even with 6k$ i would still just update my canon with more stuff(lenses, better mic, etc etc.)
@bILLproductions7669 i have a Canon 7D with a 28-155mm and 50-300mm and i only bought it for video since their great. it seems like your either jealous you don't have one. im not trying to be mean about it but i saved for months for mine
@MsRubiRose9 that's fine you can easily make a green screen with a webcam, actually if you have a mac it very easy to make a green screen with the built in effects they have on photo booth
im more of a Panasonic fan. i have a panasonic HMC150 its a great camera. i would never recommend DV tapes, most cameras now are SD Cards. Then the software no pro is going to use express. its a great program if you are starting out but if you can afford Final Cut Pro(Final cut pro 7 or earlier not Final Cut X) or Adobe suite then buy either of those 2 programs they come with programs allow you to do almost everything you could want.
@StayEarthly a lot of my friends thought it would be a good buy because it's a professional camera but it was made like 10 years ago, get an HD camera
@StayEarthly Gl2s are a fine camera easy to use they can use DV tapes or an SD card it not HD though. but i would say that if you can afford an HD camera to buy one.
It also helps a lot to have a Camera Stabilizer to get smooth shots on the move or to just stay steady. I've been using a Cam Caddie SCorpion with great success, it's affordable and effective.
Hey I need to get a camera that has good quality, and that films in hd. I know of some pretty good dslr cameras such as the cannon 60d, should I get a dslr camera or semipro/regular filming camera? thank you please reply
@Hedlind That's hard for me to say. I haven't used dslr cameras before but my friends have. The thing is i would rather buy a video camera to take video instead of a dslr camera that is primarily used to take photos. If you want to take both photos and video though, I'd say go with the dslr
hey, i have a Canon Legria HF R16 AVCHD-Camcorder that I got in September last year. I haven't been able to use it much because my computer can't handle the HD (yes my computer is from the stone age) but I'm finally getting a mac pro in a few weeks. Anyway in your video you talk about audio and how important it is to have a microphone or something to catch the sound. My camera doesn't have a microphone slot. Does this mean I'm screwed til I get a new camera?
@shoutoutamber I've seen people also use digital recorders that they'll use in conjunction with their camera. It's another thing to hold but it's cheaper then buying another camera with a microphone input. See for yourself if you need good audio though, for example i take the audio out of my snowboarding videos and replace it with music.
@bILLproductions7669 thanks so much for the tip, that's really clever. Maybe not the most practical but at least I can use what I've got, so gonna go ahead and invest in a digital recorder. Thanks!!
@shoutoutamber glad I could help. One more tip though is that your filming and recording on 2 different things so when you go to match up the audio clips to the video clips you need a marker to it will match up good. I would clap your hands at the beginning of every video clip just so you have something to match up the video and the audio together.
@weirdercize after effects is a program used to create very advanced special effects such as titles and animations, final cut express is a program used to edit videos, start with getting final cut and then move onto after effects after you have final cut mastered
@weirdercize You can't compare Final Cut to After Effects, Final Cut is an editing program, to edit your film in. After Effects is a composting program to do effects and titles. They work together, not one or the other. Get both.
@ST17productions idk because the camera I used in this video is a HV20, which i found on ebay for about $500, but now they have the HV40 which can be about $1000
what really worries me in the video tutorial world.. is when one makes a Video trying to teach something, and in the video themselves its wrong.. He is teaching ppl how to use GREEN SCREEN and then his keying itself is really poor.. so the irony is jus weird!!
@Moissawy I don't think my keying was bad at all, were talking about making youtube videos on a small budget. Not news broadcast quality which takes thousands of dollars.
What is the horrible noise in your audio? ( noise being that humming sound you hear, not noise in the general sense of the word ) How many dbs did you have too boost your audio? And you had no back light did you? Or a fill light. Horrible shadowing on your face.
and just a tip for those who are planning to add lots of special effects in ur videos (ex: explosions, fire, muzzle flares) or even titles, adobe aftereffects and action movie essentials is what u need
how could I take video while i draw on the table , I mean in strait position to let the drawings in clear image, is there any tool i can hang the camera in a 90 percent position on the table?? did u get my question??
@fawallla I understand your question but do you absolutely have to be drawing on something laying flat down? I did a time lapse once of me drawing but instead of laying it flat down, I taped a piece of paper to a wall and filmed the time lapse with a regular tripod and made sure i was standing out of the way of the camera.
The comment on type of tape is incorrect. You don't need an "HD" miniDV tape to shoot HD. HDV cameras shoot best at 720p to fit the pixel ratio of the tapes. Both standard and high definition are recorded onto the tape the exact same way, one is just in higher quality. Regular miniDV tapes are all you need for HDV cams.
@Finchspielberg you are right, this is an error in the video and I've stated this on multiple comments and in the description, HD tapes are still higher quality though in the sense you can tape over them and reuse them more times compared to a normal DV tape
the whole time he was talking about green screens i was looking at what a poor job he had done on his own, sorry brew but u cant give advice when u still need a bit of advice yourself.
I think it's great that you enjoy making videos and want to share your knowledge. Thank you for that. I would however recommend that you consider getting some introductory speaking lessons. I don't expect someone your age to really be all that polished in front of a camera, but if your goal is to sell the audience on "professional" looking videos, then you want to appear professional and polished yourself.
taping headphones to a 'real' mic so it looks like you're pro is kinda pointless because using the 'real' mic would probably be a better idea.
speeding up your sentences and cutting pretty much all dead time would increase the pro feel of your videos as this feels amateurish due to all the dead time.
lastly, re-shooting if you stutter or mess up a sentence. example: when you talked about screening problems you stuttered a lot and didn't re-shoot to fix it
also you can use a progarm call Magix Movie Editing Pro 17, its great i use that on all my movies i make its easy to use and its not expensive it;s about $89 and you can have a 7 day trial for free on there official web site just.
@MrAndreas54 I bought this camera about 2 and a half years ago for $800 off ebay with a bunch of accessories, I think now they have the Canon HV40 which I highly recommend. And as for the mic I don't exactly remember how much it cost. It was a little pricey though because it recorded audio in surround sound which I barely used. It was still nice though because it had no cords and plugged directly into the accessory shoe. If you were to buy a mic I would look for a standard shotgun mic.
@CyrusTvWithMe Windows 7 has a cool editor called WindowsLive Movie Maker. It's basically a souped up version of the Windows Movie Maker of yesteryear. There, you'll see a lot of slick graphics and even some built-in themes that make your video look very professional. You also have the option to customize the video and use titles and graphics with simple edits. The transitions are also slick, just like on a Mac. Lastly, you can upload the vids directly to YouTube, Facebook or even Twitter!
@ARCTICulACEion Sony Vegas is still alot better. You can do almost anything u can imagine with it, it's easy to learn how to use and its widely used throughout the film industry and by average consumers. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is also pretty good as well for video editing
sorry i had to correct you.. what you should have said is " If you have a PC and you have no money i would recommend Sony Vegas, although real pro's use Avid Media Composer 5"
This Green Screen buisness? So I can take a green bedsheet, tape it to the wall and hey presto? If I wanted somones head to explode (for example) how would I EXACTLY do this? I have no expericne with greenscreens but I would really like to. I use a software called Cyberlink Pro. I would like all that fancy equipment, sure, but I just don't have the money.
sony vegas HAS to be bought so i dont think it should b used it cost 600.00 $s in the U.S! Y CANT IT BE DOWNLOADABLE LIKE WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER!!!??!!??!?!?
@rockyworldsbesthorse well if you want your videos to look like crap, go ahead and use WMM.. although even final cut express can look like crap when use by ppl with no knowledge on video editing..
@djEvilDude we basically tht is true if u dont know how to use it but ive used it over 3 years now and i have virtual dub to my videos look ok not to crappy and stuff but im planning on getting DIFFRENT software because im filming a movie with a few of my friends and i wanna b able to use like 3 diffrent green screens
Personally, I thought he did what he said he's going to do, which is tell you how to make your videos look MORE professional -- he's young and still learning, cut him a break -- but he's helping those that are walking the mile he has already walked, which is more than the critics are doing... and another thing if you're starting out don't buy a DSLR, way too many curve balls for a newbie to contend with -- you're just setting yourself up to be frustrated, bad advice from the peanut gallery.
At 1:34 is he behind a green screen then he talks about green screens? Lol(:

Fooktard. You're telling me if I shot at 360p on a canon 5dmkii, the footage would look worse than a flip filming at 1080p?
And you think DSLR's are purpose built photo cameras that can do video as a gimmick? seriously.
DSLR's have huge sensors compared to video cameras. In simple terms...More dynamic range, shallower DOF, better high ISO, the list goes on.
Learn stuff before you advise people on how to spend their money.

Hey I need to get a camera that has good quality, and that films in hd. I know of some pretty good dslr cameras such as the cannon 60d, should I get a dslr camera or semipro/regular filming camera? thank you please reply
Hedlind 5 months ago
@Hedlind That's hard for me to say. I haven't used dslr cameras before but my friends have. The thing is i would rather buy a video camera to take video instead of a dslr camera that is primarily used to take photos. If you want to take both photos and video though, I'd say go with the dslr
bILLproductions7669 5 months ago
@Hedlind I'm a Nikon fan, so I would say that Nikon D7000 do a pretty nice job for filming in HD, I think in 720p and maybe even in 1080p, not sure.

hey, i have a Canon Legria HF R16 AVCHD-Camcorder that I got in September last year. Does this mean I'm screwed til I get a new camera?
shoutoutamber 5 months ago
@shoutoutamber I've seen people also use digital recorders that they'll use in conjunction with their camera. It's another thing to hold but it's cheaper then buying another camera with a microphone input. See for yourself if you need good audio though, for example i take the audio out of my snowboarding videos and replace it with music.
bILLproductions7669 5 months ago
@bILLproductions7669 thanks so much for the tip, that's really clever. Maybe not the most practical but at least I can use what I've got, so gonna go ahead and invest in a digital recorder. Thanks!!

shoutoutamber 5 months ago
@shoutoutamber glad I could help. One more tip though is that your filming and recording on 2 different things so when you go to match up the audio clips to the video clips you need a marker to it will match up good. I would clap your hands at the beginning of every video clip just so you have something to match up the video and the audio together.
bILLproductions7669 5 months ago
@bILLproductions7669 that would make sense, good idea. thanks again!

Is final cut better than after effects? I don't have either and want to know which to get
weirdercize 5 months ago
@weirdercize after effects is a program used to create very advanced special effects such as titles and animations, final cut express is a program used to edit videos, start with getting final cut and then move onto after effects after you have final cut mastered
bILLproductions7669 5 months ago
@weirdercize You can't compare Final Cut to After Effects, Final Cut is an editing program, to edit your film in. After Effects is a composting program to do effects and titles. They work together, not one or the other. Get both.

what really worries me in the video tutorial world.. is when one makes a Video trying to teach something, and in the video themselves its wrong.. He is teaching ppl how to use GREEN SCREEN and then his keying itself is really poor.. so the irony is jus weird!!
Moissawy 6 months ago
@Moissawy I don't think my keying was bad at all, were talking about making youtube videos on a small budget. Not news broadcast quality which takes thousands of dollars.

@mrfordfan
Since he is using a DV tape camera, the noise is probably that. It can be a pain, so I try and stick to digital
BlondeyDude 6 months ago
What is the horrible noise in your audio? ( noise being that humming sound you hear, not noise in the general sense of the word ) How many dbs did you have too boost your audio? And you had no back light did you? Or a fill light. Horrible shadowing on your face.
mrfordfan 6 months ago
and just a tip for those who are planning to add lots of special effects in ur videos (ex: explosions, fire, muzzle flares) or even titles, adobe aftereffects and action movie essentials is what u need

how could I take video while i draw on the table , I mean in strait position to let the drawings in clear image, is there any tool i can hang the camera in a 90 percent position on the table?? did u get my question??
fawallla 6 months ago
@fawallla I understand your question but do you absolutely have to be drawing on something laying flat down? I did a time lapse once of me drawing but instead of laying it flat down, I taped a piece of paper to a wall and filmed the time lapse with a regular tripod and made sure i was standing out of the way of the camera.

NigelTMY 6 months ago
The comment on type of tape is incorrect. You don't need an "HD" miniDV tape to shoot HD. HDV cameras shoot best at 720p to fit the pixel ratio of the tapes. Both standard and high definition are recorded onto the tape the exact same way, one is just in higher quality. Regular miniDV tapes are all you need for HDV cams.
Finchspielberg 6 months ago
@Finchspielberg you are right, this is an error in the video and I've stated this on multiple comments and in the description, HD tapes are still higher quality though in the sense you can tape over them and reuse them more times compared to a normal DV tape

About the video editing software, i would suggest After Effects CS5
mrmisenakki 7 months ago
I think it's great that you enjoy making videos and want to share your knowledge. Thank you for that. I would however recommend that you consider getting some introductory speaking lessons. I don't expect someone your age to really be all that polished in front of a camera, but if your goal is to sell the audience on "professional" looking videos, then you want to appear professional and polished yourself.
palemountain 7 months ago
final cut express? fuck i only have final cut pro… well that was a waste of money
Dom24seven 7 months ago
here's some hopefully helpful criticism
taping headphones to a 'real' mic so it looks like you're pro is kinda pointless because using the 'real' mic would probably be a better idea.
speeding up your sentences and cutting pretty much all dead time would increase the pro feel of your videos as this feels amateurish due to all the dead time.
lastly, re-shooting if you stutter or mess up a sentence. example: when you talked about screening problems you stuttered a lot and didn't re-shoot to fix it
hobocamptheater 7 months ago
final cut pro, after effects, or premier work fine.
Vorick6 7 months ago
also you can use a progarm call Magix Movie Editing Pro 17, its great i use that on all my movies i make its easy to use and its not expensive it;s about $89 and you can have a 7 day trial for free on there official web site just.
Bowbie28 7 months ago
nice info. what did you pay for your equipment (camera and mic)?
MrAndreas54 7 months ago
@MrAndreas54 I bought this camera about 2 and a half years ago for $800 off ebay with a bunch of accessories, I think now they have the Canon HV40 which I highly recommend. And as for the mic I don't exactly remember how much it cost. It was a little pricey though because it recorded audio in surround sound which I barely used. It was still nice though because it had no cords and plugged directly into the accessory shoe. If you were to buy a mic I would look for a standard shotgun mic.

How would u edit if u have a dell
CyrusTvWithMe 7 months ago
@CyrusTvWithMe well to start off very basic you can use windows movie maker then move your way up from there
bILLproductions7669 7 months ago
@CyrusTvWithMe Windows 7 has a cool editor called WindowsLive Movie Maker. It's basically a souped up version of the Windows Movie Maker of yesteryear. There, you'll see a lot of slick graphics and even some built-in themes that make your video look very professional. You also have the option to customize the video and use titles and graphics with simple edits. The transitions are also slick, just like on a Mac. Lastly, you can upload the vids directly to YouTube, Facebook or even Twitter!
ARCTICulACEion 7 months ago
@ARCTICulACEion Sony Vegas is still alot better. You can do almost anything u can imagine with it, it's easy to learn how to use and its widely used throughout the film industry and by average consumers. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is also pretty good as well for video editing
StupidVids2009 7 months ago

Personally, I thought he did what he said he's going to do, which is tell you how to make your videos look MORE professional -- he's young and still learning, cut him a break -- but he's helping those that are walking the mile he has already walked, which is more than the critics are doing... and another thing if you're starting out don't buy a DSLR, way too many curve balls for a newbie to contend with -- you're just setting yourself up to be frustrated, bad advice from the peanut gallery.
