Well I dont believe that those crash tests have the same results like in actual life. I own this car and a year ago i had an accident because the other driver passed a red light. My speed was about 80 KMH (50 mph) when i crashed on him. He had a 2008 Toyota Avensis. I crashe on his left side in the center.
Well the results for the car were bad. But i came out of it without a scratch!! No airbag only belt.
The other driver wasnt wearing belt so he went on Hospital. The 8 airbags did nothing.
I wonder what engine was there 1.6l? because if you'd have 2.0l or 2.5l OR 2.8l plate engine I doubt that car would crush so hard like that with a head to head impact
@DoogieDarwel I'm still driving this kinda car with only 2 air bags in front, so I'm kinda worried ;D and I think the bigger engine provides more safety :) no?
Look too for the e39 before and after weld spots updating, there are two videos on youtube. I have many prospects and lekture about the e36 and there are pictures and a lot to read about these updates. Many german cars from the 90" have weld spots updates after facelift or before.....they updated thear cars continuerly to sell high tech cars and not only 7 Year old models at the end of the produktion Greetings Munich
Here is the chart of 1997 cars: 1.Volvo S40 -26 p. 2.VW Passat -19 p. 3.Opel Vectra -18 p. 4.Renault Laguna -17 p. 4.Audi A4 -17 p. 4.Ford Mondeo -17 p. 5.Mercedes-Benz C Class -16 p. 6.Peugeot 406 -15 p. 7.Saab 900 -12 p. 8.Rover 600 -11 p. 9. BMW 3 Series -10 p. 10. Citroen Xantia -9 p. I think there's all of them. You do the judge.
@ODaLegend9 "combined speed" has been proven to be irrelevant unless the other vehicle is significantly larger. Two cars of equal size crashing at 50mph each is the same force as one car crashing at 50.
You have to remember guys that this car had its designs from 1991. And like people have said, there constantly updating their structers and that. I dont care what any Volvo of Merc driving says, BMW are the safest cars on this planet!
This car was a 1991 bmw 3 serien, but this 1991 3series was testet in 1997. Its not a 1997 3 series. This car has lens in his headlights an no passanger airbag. The 3 series in this test have his airbag sensors over the front wheels. The younger e36 have the airbag sensors under the bank in the fond (in the middle)
97 is almost the end the life cycle of E36, it does not make sense to overhaul the chassis. Since E46 came out in 1999, E36 will be the it is as ever. As a Chinese, I found very amusing what ADAC and German media press after Brilliance Auto crash test. :) Did not take long for me to fish this clip out.
BMW updatet this car continualy an updated the weld spot s too. Look at the old Merc e crashtests or the e39, or the e46 before 2000 and after 2000...german engineers updatet all these cars with more weld spots. Here on Youtube are crashtests bevore ande after weld spot updating, look for it
No, the crash testet car was a 93 bmw with fl indikators but only one airbag. Look at the headlights, there are the old headlights on that testet car. Take a look at the Airbag, there only one airbag steering wheel in this car. And its the big old steering wheel with no color BMW emblem. This system have their sensors placed over the front wheels. The last e36 have 4 airbags...Bmw updated the airbags too
On european E36s like this one, side airbags were not available and a passenger airbag was usually an extra cost option. The car in the video is a 1997 model, you can see the facelift kidney grilles
they also forgot to mention that it has a 4-cylinder engine in the front, not the usual inline-6. That definitely plays a huge part in the impact as well..
@MrJallmari is it me or does it look like its a 318 sedan? (it has hubcaps and 325 or 6 cylinder E36 came with only alloys... maybe thats why this seems so bad considering it's a 4 cylinder in there instead?
According to the crash test material on these bmw e36, the impact material was a solid metal block which was not design to absorb impact, and it is a fixed stationary machine used to destroy something,
unless the bmw e36 hit on the armor vehicle (tank) or big tractor?, bus, lorry?.
but in real traffic accident, it will involve with vehicle vs vehicle crash, and both vehicle will bounce away during the impact. that the vehicle is design to absorb impact force,
I've been driving this car for 7 years now. I've always loved it. Never had an accident yet. Now I'm totally shocked. Never thought that I seriously want to get another safer car right away.
@jasiflower If you drive ANY car designed in the 1990s or earlier it will be this bad or worse. For example, watch the tests from the same year of Mercedes C, Audi A4, Saab 900, Rover 600 ect....they are all only 2 stars! Buy a car designed AFTER 1997 and things get much safer.
haha, I don't know what's worse, this BMW 3series or my early 90's Hyundai that I bought for £275, which scored 2stars in the Australian crash test LOL
this car was designed in the late 80's, and launched in the early 90's. it met all the safety requirements of that time, plus manufacturers didnt have the super computers we have today. the e36 will never do well in NCAP tests, because the NCAP didnt exist in its time. today, car manufacturers specifically design their cars so that they will do well in the NCAP.

@garyproton VERY true indeed. Do not forget this car went on sale in 1990. It was a lot safer than just about all cars from this era. As you said it is not fair crashing an elderly e36 in a modern crash test.
This is the 3 series E36 made 1991-1998. It's suprising that even in 1997 when the car had been around for years, it was still a disaster in safety.
The 5 series E39 that was sold from 1995-2003 got 4/5 stars and was as safe as Volvo S40/V40. And actually is as safe as the BMW 5 series E60 that was still sold in 2010.
The newer 3 series improped alot on safety. The new generation even got 5 stars.
I guess it's not that bad since that's crashing into something that doesnt move, but when you crash into another car, the other car will move a bit, making a less crashy crash
@violent2k not even a good way to look at it. theres many things you have to think about. like one for example inertia. the cars have kinetic energy and a brick wall doesnt. both cars would fly at impact, compared to if a car hit a brick wall and it would just bounce off..... go to school.
for all those who ask go to euroncapdotcom to see, the car is rated at 1.5 stars, and there's very little difference between the inline 4 engine and the V6, either ways you're dead

In this car you dont need airbag, because the steering wheel was kill you totally.

Dont crash i say !! Beacause this is nice and very good handling car with balls. ...

If 2 cars hit eachother front-front in 60 km/h, it would be like hitting a "immovable" object in 120 km/h or depending on the weight of the other car
