  • Sure beats all the Black-crap singers of today!

  • One of Gene Chandler's often overlooked songs is a real 'gem' that was a regional hit in the midwest in 1962, 'When You Left Me." The Chicago stations played it all the time and it was huge and it is one of the most memorable songs from my youth in Chicago that brings back such great memories of that time, the girls and the wonderful times we had.

  • Have not hear this one in a long time. I also saw Gene Chandler in person in 1964 and 1965. He was so cool and a great performer. In his era there were so many great soul singers but he is memorable, especially from my years in Chicago.

  • R. KELLEY? ARE YOU ON DOPE? This is the one and only GENE CHANDLER, THE WOMAN HANDLER! R. Kelly could not flush his toilet! And Curtis Mayfield wrote the the majority of his hits! Saw him at the Howard Theater in '65, '66, and '67! HE IS ONE HELL OF AN ENTERTAINER!

  • The UNSUNG episode on TAMMI TERRELL is available on YouTube.

  • I recently saw , on the T.V. series UNSUNG, that Gene was instrumental in getting TAMMI TERRELL away from James Brown's abusive grip. WAY TO GO GENE !! although Tammi died tragicly young, you may have indeed been instrumental in extending her life. UNSUNG should do a show on YOU !!!

  • i remember being in high school when i first heard rainbow65 what a classic, we all sat around a little portable am radio and mooned over gene while fantasizing about the same football star. "big Larry. Those were the days. by the way we were wearing shifts(dresses).

  • GENE "The Duke" CHANDLER SHOULD HAVE BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME YEARS AGO !!! How he's not in ,( with over 30 chart hits, and a Grammy Hall Of Fame Inductee, singer, songwriter , producer, entrepreneur, and record executive), but one -hit wonder Percy Sledge is, BLOWS MY MIND !!!

  • @williamg2552 Percy Sledge just happened to have recorded the greatest love song of all time! (BY MISTAKE!)

  • @JazzyJ1318 Maybe so, but he can't hold a candle to THE DUKE OF EARL !!!

  • @JazzyJ1318 I am confused about our conversation! Duke of Earl was a fabulous song! My favorite though was Rainbow and Rainbow 65! I cant remember how we got on Percy Sledge, but When a Man loves a woman is the all time greatest love song! (Please tell me why are we comparing the two? I'm lost!

  • @kylasr6900 I saw BOTH of them on the SAME show, two years ago...Believe me when I say, GENE CHANDLER MURDERED PERCY SLEDGE ON STAGE !!!

  • @williamg2552 because the hall of fame is bullshit!!!

  • Gene Chandler - the Entertainer he definitely was (even song a song The Entertainer)

  • Gene Chandler is great singer. Love his songs. Great video. Huge star. Thanks

  • Debut Date 4-17-1965

    Constellation C-149

Peak Billboard Chart No. 18 (12 weeks on Billboard Chart)

  • The Duke's The Man!

  • This was 1965. Look how nice and neat the teenagers dressed.

Look how slender they are. That's before the obesity epidemic.

Also most of those young men will either enlist or be drafted into

    military service in 1966, 67 and 68.

  • @tumsabai1 Definitely a better time indeed. And the "Duke" had a huge white following with his string of tremendous hits! And Bunky Sheppard knew a hit when he heard it!

  • I see that stingy brim hat is back in style . . . .

  • well to all those people that missed out on the chicagomusic sence in the 60's and other time it was a place there call the burning spear ciub and if you wanted to see all the big time singers of the start of the real old school music you would know that some of the singer were in other groups until they found there real place ,so did you know that c.mayfeild was part of the impression group to just a tid bit for the lover of music.

  • I have been looking for this song 44 years. I could remember some of the words but not the singer. Thanks for posting.

  • @china101w i'm so glad that i could bring this out my dusty doors of my mind cause i love all the old music and the groups that is why i look for these song so look for more cause i will be pulling it out of my hat lol.

  • i wonder what the two dudes holden his hat coat doing these days. they had a lil soul about them. and the girl with that cute lil style of clapping. what they doin these days?

  • it is quite evident that you know nothing of R and B music so please do me and all of us a favor go and check out the heavy metal section. Whatever you think of R Kelly he have written some of the most profound songs and like Gene they are both from Chi-town, though they come from a different era their impact is similiar, they both experience trouble with the law and they are both very talented.

  • I hear Curtis Mayfield's style in there. I wonder if he wrote this tune.

  • @akilah49 yes Curtis mayfield did pen this song

  • @ian40 the curtis touch gold

  • @akilah49 yes he did

  • LA airdate: April 17, 1965 (NYC airdate: May 22, 1965)

    shiveree !!!!

  • The "DUKE OF EARL" HIMSELF !!!

  • We even used to have a dance called The Gene Chandler!

  • Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, Major Lance and Jackie Wilson were Huge Stars back before Motown!

  • all i can say is he got down in his day and never got the credit he was due but it is coming in a little while cause what was at the bottom will come to the top so wait for it .

  • @maewest123atl

I wonder what prevented Barry Gordy from signing him to Motown.I'm sure BJ was a big fan of his.

  • for all you youngins this guy was the R.Kelly of the 60's in my opinion. There were so many great singers in this era.Gene is often overlook but he was a force

  • Except not a pedophile.

  • @LokiClock LOL you aint right for that one! But it's true!

  • @LokiClock Isn't it strange that people know all the alleged dirt on others, and emphasize that to the extreme? I followed Gene Chandler throughout his career and never heard that rumor (?). Gene Chandler is one of the greatest voices of ever be waxed.

  • @jabrilhenry100 I was making a joke about the comparison to R. Kelly.

  • I think people just think "Duke of Earl" and

never give him another thought, but he

    was a very good singer.

  • @17865329 i've never known much about him outside of duke of earl.....just starting to get into his music

  • @bmwstan

I'll bet that Berry Gordy was/is a huge fan of Mr.Gene Chandler. He is probably one of the artist that Mr.Gordy wished he had signed.

  • @bmwstan r kelly is terrible, are you seriously comparing the duke to that fucker??

  • @bmwstan Please don't compare R. Kelly and Gene. Gene was so much better.

  • @bmwstan R Kelly couldn't TOUCH Gene. Not on his BEST DAY !!!

  • THIS IS BRILL X

  • re, earlier posts , gene chandler played morecambe central pier on the 26 aug 1983 and it was packed out and HOT in every sense of the word. yes i need to get out more , i know,i know lol.

  • Was it wise to play at the Morecambe pier?

    Nothing can stop Gene.

    Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  • ? wise. maybe im getting lost in translation . morecambe pier north of england. sorry

  • It was a pun on Morecambe and Wise

  • Okay, so here's Gene Chandler, in the middle of his great Brunswick period, on "Shivaree." He had to be in Hollywood doing a live date to get the TV appearance. Anybody know where he performed? The Palladium, The Hullabaloo, The Trip, The Red Velvet, maybe, or even The Whisky? Enquiring minds want to know.

  • Ahh Gene Chandler ...One of the all time great singers singing one of the all time great songs....

  • cool!

  • The part where he gets his hat and coat is pretty neat and he timed it just right. Fantastic artist and singer!

  • does anyone remember the label soul city?

number 103 was the beat by gene chandler.

    twisted wheeler spain.

  • The bizzzzzzzzzzzz totally wicked track thanks

  • We loved Gene. He always got played at Twisted Wheel all-nighters

  • Gene Chandler had a helluva voice. He should be on top as one of the best soul artists alongside Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Jackie and Wilson. Gene is my absolute favorite and boy could he sing ballads. He sung some of the best soul ballads, Just Be True, What Now, God Bless Our Love, Man's Temptation, Here Comes The Tears, To Be A Lover, and songs such as these and others always pleases.

  • yea i am with you there, his voice is incredible.

  • Great track, caught him live at Morcambe pier all nighter about twenty odd years ago now, he was pretty fierce. By the way, his last album is full of great modern soul dancers, try and check it out if you get a chance.

  • they're all connected!!! Damn no wonder my parents loved Curtis Mayfield!

  • I grew up thinking this song was by The Impressions....If you don't know....Now U know

    SLS

    2.2

  • Many of Gene's songs were composed by Curtis Mayfield (this may have been one?) Also, I believe the Impressions did back up on some of his songs (specifically "What Now")?

  • Yeah this is a Mayfield composition and he also produced the track. You might want to try to find the Curtis Mayfield's Chicago Soul cd, featuring tracks he composed/produced. He did a whole load of tracks for the Okeh label and later for Brunswick.

  • I'm speechless...Been looking for this song for the longest. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Great sentimental post.

  • Eugene Dixon is his real name.Great voice that could sing and hold his own with the best. Check him out with The Dukays on Nite owl.
